im a level 11 and picked shadow and so far im not doing to bad whats the better of the other 2 options to pair with shadow? im sticking to duel weapons vs. archery, is that a good thing?! i really miss the 2nd weapon option from dao, it really helped being able to switch from melee to ranged! i get it u have to think more on how u build ur character in da2. which is a catch 22 for me!

I prefer Assassin myself. Assassin-Shadow is a crit-monster.

Pretty much what he says. But you have to keep in mind your style of play. Personally put a few points into SAB, Scoundrel, and even a point into Specialist.
I was trying to focus more on passive abilities that you don't have to activate so you can keep up great damage while waiting on cooldowns. You can never go wrong with maxing out Assassin and Shadow, those two are crazy deadly.

Indeed, oh so much indeed.
My level 27 rogue was an Assassin/Shadow one and was dealing damage like you wouldn't believe (just a saying, you played it too, so you would obviously believe as you've seen it first hand).
I already had 100% Critical chance sometime around in the midgame and by the end of the game I had little more than 300% critical damage bonus. And that is WITHOUT benefitting from the various critical damage boni you get from Shadow when attacking whilst obscured and such.
And the best thing about the Shadow specialization is that you are a walking C-C-Combo Maker. Anders or Merill blasting away with Spirit Bolt, Stone Fist or Walking Bomb or Aveline with Assault and Scatter at disoriented enemies that you can produce with every single attack when you are obscured (and you'll be obscured a lot) is effectively enhancing your entire party damage output by a large margin!
Not to mention that with (Stealth and) Decoy, you got some very nice panic button(s) that simultanously cause for your party damage to rise up because *tadaa*, you're obscured again (lots of disoriented enemies).
A party or Aveline, Assassin/Shadow Hawke, Anders and Merill is not going to kill enemies, it is making them cease to exist!

I'd like to throw my hat in and also concur with the Assassin/Shadow combination. Vendetta for Duelist is sweet, but the Passives for Shadow just completely makes your Rogue into a beast.

I played I did an archer and went with everything in the Assassin branch and some stuff in the Shadow branch and really liked it. So I also vote for the Assassin/Shadow combo. I did not yet play with the duelist specialization and probably never will because I'm not really a fan of the rogue class, I'm more of a warrior person. I tried an archer just to see how different it was from Origins' version.

Shadow/Assassin is the most optimal way to go for a Rogue (DW or Archer). The last patch gave the Shadow spec some serious (and quite unnecessary TBH) DPS buffs, wich in turn made the already inferior Duelist spec even less effective in comparison, since unlike the Shadow, it didin't receive any buffs/changes whatsoever. The only change from 1.02/1.03 that synergizes really well with the Duelist spec is the mega buff to Lacerate. Hitting a staggered target with Vendetta is pretty ridiculous, since it guarantees double damage from the CCC and it also bypasses that stupid 40% / 80% damage cap.
That said, it is still viable to play a DW Assassin/Duelist rogue. The stagger + lacerate + vendetta combo sort of makes up for what you are missing out on from the Shadow spec. Plus, Vendetta is a really fun ability to use for me personally.

While I also like vendetta, I agree with everybody saying that shadow + assassin is the best combo regardless if you're an archer or DW. The only saving grace of duelist is vendetta. Everything else is worthless. Shadows have decoy (THE solo ability) and lost of excellent passives. Predator is pretty much the only crap ability there since inconspicuous is a bit useful. Assassin has mark of death, bloodlust, devious harm (THE reason to get assassin) and assassinate. Only pinpoint strikes is crap there and it's actually quite useful if you get assassin early on.

For my money, the best Rogue talents are in the Specialist and Duelist trees. Putting enough points into Specialist to get Harmony makes the two other mutually exclusive modes you'll never activate worth it - because they're partially active whenever the one you want is active. Personally I bought all three "Speed" talents and used that. Anything that increases attack speed is a big help; in DA:O and Awakening it was Momentum and the Momentum rune, here it's Speed and a few items.
Assassin is handy for Mark of Death, as well.
Duelist is mostly useful for Parry. I tried to use "Drop the Gauntlet," but I didn't generally feel a lot more effective for doing it.
