Should be an option to "harden" Alistair (spoilerish)

It's a little ridiculous that failing to say one line of dialog at some random point in the story line can have such a massive effect on the ending of the game. I did his personal quest about mid way through the game, and have no intention of going back and replaying over what seemed like a really hurtful thing to say to him at that time.
So about 30 more hours of gameplay later, I learn that I've ruined my preferred ending.
I really think there should be another option to "harden" Alistair, perhaps when you give him Duncan's shield, or when the discussion of marrying Anora comes up, there could be another option.
If Lelianna's "hardening" has a similar impact on the ending, then a similar mechanism should be supplied to "harden" her character later in the game as well.
It makes me feel like if you don't go through one of the walkthrough's or strategy guides that you are completely in the dark to the effect you're having on the ending of the game based purely on saying or not saying one out of character phrase at some random point in the game play, with no ability to reverse it in any form or fashion later, and requiring hours upon hours of replay just to get a preferred ending (if you happen to have a save close enough to that time frame at all, otherwise requiring total restart) is very anti-user experience.
It's really affected my overall perception of the game (which up until this point I had thoroughly enjoyed), and really will make me think long and hard before I invest my time, money, and emotional investment into another Bioware product.
Good day

I don't think they should of, which in this case I am really glad, because I would seriously hate it, and even to do that to Alistair's character. Zev maybe or maybe even Morrigan, but not Alistair. It wouldn't feel right to do that. He's gone through so much and to have a hardended/rival would make things worse.
But if it was an option, I would want him to break up with the character in the end. It would be.. a good ending for that.
But like I said, I am glad they didn't do that to him. That would ruin his romance for me and make me cry in a corner.

The fact that they made it something this singular is what makes it so brilliant. You just don't see it coming. And it makes it that much more painful. I mean all of those emotions and time and investment you put into that relationship only to get your heart broken... ugh so brilliant.
Personally, even if Alistair hadn't dumped me and smashed my heart into smithereens on my first playthrough, I still would have wanted to playthrough again. You just can't experience the game in its entirety in one playthrough.
Also, even if there was another chance to harden him, I doubt I would have known to choose that either, without reading spoilers. If you are playing a kind-hearted character who is in love with Alistair, it isn't really a first instinct to say something horrible to him like "get used to it dude, people suck" after he just found out his only living relative was a shrew (at least, it wasn't for me). I'm guessing another chance to harden him would be just as brutal and probably wouldn't be an instinctual thing to pick, either.
Also, if it helps at all, you are not alone in your frustration:
