I'm leaning towards a male elf for my mage though, but I normally can't associate with male characters, and it's hard for me to bond (funny, I know) with them, which makes immersion really hard :<

This makes me think of my gender-bending group...
I'll be playing both genders and all origins eventually, but my "main" (first character/avatar) is a male dalish rogue with a later ranger specialization. I myself am female, and I actually prefer playing males. And no, it's not becuase I "prefer to look at a guy's pixel back/butt for hours." "Masculine" things have always interested me more than "feminine" things, and I don't think of characters as myself when I play them. I play what I find interesting, and I just tend to gravitate towards males when I come up with character concepts.
My soulmate!
I'm a female and I'll be playing a male dalish warrior first time through. I recognise your interest in masculine things, as I'm a martial artist and I'm quite well muscled. I just haaaate playing those spindly thin females with huge breasts. It seems so wrong with them wielding huge swords and wearing next to no armour to protect themselves. It's hateful. You hear what I say, designers!?

This time I'm gonna try the beginning of all the origins to see what I would play.
The most entertaining I think will be: Human Noble(Male), City Elf (Female), Noble Dwarf (Male), Commoner Dwarf(Female, thinking about a male but it's the first game where dwarf females are not... hidious and disproportioned) , not sure about Dalish and Mage. Probably both elves, the dalish being female and the mage a male.
I'm a bit surprised about how many real women posted there. Perhaps the guys who play with a female character don't want to admit it in case the other people think they're doing it because they want to see something 'beautiful'. I don't know, but it's a fair reason.
For me, I love dwarves, so whatever story I like better (commoner or noble) will decide my gender character.

DA:O is going to be the first game ever in which I will voluntarily choose a male character on my first playthrough.

I'm female and pretty much all of my custom characters aside from KotOR2's Exile are female. I may eventually make a guy for DA:O just to see how many things are different.
Ironic considering that the Exile is canonically female, unlike other similar characters from Star Wars games (Revan, Jaden).
