I'm male, and I used to fall into the group that played female characters because the character models and outfits were so much better. But I've found the male characters in DA:O's character creator tool to be appealing enough to be played, so consider me converted.

I am male and when given the option I usually play first through as a female first. Not because I want to start a pixelated butt for hours. But becaue since I am male its interesting for me to see the story unfold through a female's perspective which is sometimes quiet different from my own. That being said I will play through as male character eventually. Like a previous poster said I played ME first as female and then when I played a male the game did not have the same feeling to me.

I'm a boy, but I noticed chicks get better hair and makeup options usually. (I didn't say I was manly...)

I'm male, playing as a male, playing with females in the game. Why? Because it's easier to relate to.

Will however give it a whirl down the track playing as a woman, just to see if there are any different story sections (Apart from romances).

And to perhaps have a gawk or two if the mood takes.

Wait. Did I say that aloud?

I'm female, and my first character is going to be a male city elf rogue. That's the first character concept I had, so I ran with it. My second two will probably be female, but I don't know for sure yet. I think in total I end up playing about half male and half female characters, though I tend to play more male characters in computer games, which might skew the balance a bit. Some of this has to do with the armour choices for female characters in a lot of computer games.

Whenever I think of a character idea I tend to think of a bunch of random things about them at the same time, and I usually have some idea whether they'll be male or female. If not, I just flip a coin or something.

I currently have an equal number of male and female characters of different origins made for play. I'm not at all bothered about what people thinks which gender others should play as.

I am male irl. I typically play male characters. But I do indulge in female characters once in awhile. I like when a game has different quests, text or voice overs depending on your sex. It makes it fun to play through as both sexes to see the differences between the two. I am gonna play a male dwarf for my first run, will play a female for my second!

Sometime in NWN1 times I noticed that roleplaying a female in RPGs makes the whole thing much more interesting. It's neither the nice backside nor any issue with my actual gender, but I somehow managed to get much deeper into a character and think much more about their behaviour if they are female. It might have to do with the stereotypical low-brow brutes the character creation screen throws at me and that I can't relate to - these fit in nicely if I want to play a fast-paced Shooter without much thinking, but I just can't imagine them to be interesting enough to be played in a 60+-hour game. Most, that is - there are always exceptions. In NWN1 and 2 I played maybe 20% males and 80% females, and playing online I consider it quite rewarding if my female character turns out to be a believable, realistic character that don't fall into the category of your usual teenage dream in a chainmail bikini. I think the best compliment I ever got was indirectly from a female I played with, who'd even after more than a year not believe I'm a male, instead thinking I'm a girl telling everyone I'm male to keep the lads on a save distance. :P
Anyway, I can only recommend gender-bending in RPGs, the first time it's weird, later it's quite rewarding because you approach things very differently.

I am a female who plans on playing this game through as a male. I generally play as a female though, as I did with Mass Effect and KOTOR.

Hm... My apologies for all the extra posts.. Seems that there has been some sort of net problems on my side. I'd appreciate it if some moderator could delete them for me. Thanks. :)

Aw, and here I was, thinking you posting so many times because you really liked what I said. ;)

In any case... Agreed on the female game models/armors. :pinched: At least Dragon Age doesn't have any "chainmail bikinis" and the most revealing armors are still modest compared to other games... And they're only like that for a few of the light armors.

I am male and play both female and male characters. In ME1 I preferred to play female, because I thought the voice acting was better and FemShep gave me a better game experience. In this game I try to play the various races in both female and male variations. I've read that this is a huge game, so that may be a problem, because I like other games as well. ;)

I don't have a particular aversion to it but in RP games I'm usually pretty bad at playing women. I am going to try an archer in this game to start out as opposed to the brawny warrior-tank I usually go with though.

I'm male and plan to do my first playthrough as a female, second as a male (so I can see how the two genders differ). I do usually prefer to play as a female in RPGs though, mainly I think because I don't see myself as *being* my character, but as having a relationship with my character. I'm going to spend time with this character, and I've seen all the possible male stereotypical hero characters in movies before. I like being able to imagine a hero story with a female lead, while still keeping her distinctly female - too often in action movies the only way a woman gets a hero role is if she acts just like a man, or if the man still has to come to her rescue at some point.

Oh I did like what you said. I was just worried the others would get annoyed.

If what you're saying about the armors not being revealing, then that's great. Seems Bioware is rather sensible on that area, as there wasn't any such armors in Mass Effect or KoTOR either. <3

I'm female, and my first play-through is always female.

If I have enough steam left after that, I'll replay male, but I usually lose interest. Or, I end up getting sick of watching my male avatar run around. I'm very picky with men, and it's easy for male avatars to look like douchebags. (Avatars only. Nothing against the real life versions.)

I like this reasoning, too.  This is generally why I never gender-bend in table-top RPGs.  There are always a plethora of male PCs running around.  Let's put a female in their midst and let her be a real woman rather than just another man trapped in a woman's body.

i generally prefer playing females. This is consistent with my preference for female heroines in general fiction.

In al lot of pop fiction I have preferred the female characters including Buffy, Dark Angel, Kira in Deep space 9 and Dizzy from Space Ship Troopers.

So when I play a video game I want to create and play a female charater who can be another fictional heroine.

Strangely enough, my favourite female charactewrs are warrior/fighting/military types, while any male character I have admired have been more intelligent and pacific in nature (e.g. Mulder).

Yup, that's what I'm saying. Except for the Light armors, the female armor sets are pretty much just like their male counterparts. You can check out examples at the Dragon Age Tome of Knowledge. :D

Total bro here, but I have to say that I'm one of those people who like to mix it up. There is no real explanation, but I prefer to play female characters if they're mages, seems more appropriate. Men are portrayed as brutal warriors and women are protrayed as mindful mages.

Plus, I'm a fan of R.A. Salvatores books and women are just more powerful as mages. :P Ah...Drow society...So backwards from what is the norm.

Just a random girl poppin' in~

My first character will probably be one that's based on myself, to be honest. XD

I do it with all of my new games. Make a mini-me and run around in-game, learning the controls on the way~ Once I've gotten a good handle on it, I'll just go back and make a new character. :3

First playthrough is probably going to be on a Human Noble... Rouge, I think.

Second and third'll be city elf and dwarf commoner.

... I don't really play guys. I don't usually 'connect' well with them, but hey... Maybe I'll give it a go!
