I'm male, (as my name suggests) and I prefer to play female characters. (like my avatar) Personally I don't dig the whole "staring at a virtual rump all day" explanation. Male characters tend to bore me because I'm already a male character all day every day, and have plenty of adventures through that perspective. Also, as a roleplayer I enjoy the challange of bringing, believable, entertaining characters to life, and exploring worlds through the eyes of the other gender is yet another facet that forces me to refine my ability and really delve into the characters.
Whos a boy, girls?

I'm male, human, north european IRL, but in-game I'll try anything once ...
Or twice. Or thrice. Or - well, the point is, character generation is often almost the main attraction for me, especially in Bioware's and Bethesda's games. I have probably spent weeks fiddling with skill points and cosmetic changes ever since Baldur's Gate, and I still can't get enough of it!
Whatever gender, race, etc. I choose is completely governed by whatever concept I dreamt up last. =) For the first playthrough though, I usually play a character (verrry) loosely based on myself (Exhibit A: my avatar, Uwain the Mage).
As for connecting with my characters, well ... I honestly hope there's not too many people in this community who can actually relate to invincible mass-murdering mutes with delusions of a divine mandate? ;P

All rumps aside, as a male, I usually start with a female character. Sure there's the, "I'd rather roleplay as something I'm not" argument, but I think there's a bit more to it. I think a lot of these sci-fi \\ fantasies are typically feminine works, or texts, in a lot of ways. There's a lot of the masculine brute force going on in the political side, and in the end creative feminine ideas tend to save the day. There is also a lot of the (perceived) wuss character prove themselves to be a truly powerful being that can change the course of history. I'm not trying to get into literary or gender arguments about the female vs feminine. I'm just saying that I've tried playing these texts through the feminine perspective and it seems to read in a more interesting way.

I'm a guy and i switch around.
I generally see certain class more suitable for a gender. I'm planning on a male warrior, female mage, female rogue/archer, and another male not sure what class yet, probably bard.
Some might think it sexist, but i started doing this in WoW with male fighters/casters and female spellcasters, and it seemed more fitting. Although that could also be from them females actually wearing believable armor such as enchanted robes instead of chainmail bikinis.

I'm a guy,I always play as female characters becos i prefer looking at a womans ass running around the screen then a guys ass..also it's more fun changing armors on female characters cos they can look more sexy,i dont really care about a male character how he looks in armor
Yep. guy here too and I play female characters for that same reason. I mean you spend hour/days following these characters around and the sway of the female tush is a nice distraction.
