I just got to Lord Lao's Furnace and I started messing around to see what would happen, except I'm not good at puzzles (and I don't like them) so I kinda cheated and looked it up on the web. I had the horse configuration and tried it out but my character just changed gender. I was unsure of what I had done wrong but decided to ignore it for the moment. later on I found  the serpent configuration and followed the instructions on the web and it worked but when I tried to do the horse configuration again nothing happened.

I know I didn't succeed the first time because my technique list didn't get updated like it did with the serpent configuration and the bar of nickled iron didn't disappear. I was just wondering what I did wrong  (I used the water wheel, the chimney, the cauldron and then pushed the tiger button)? Or is this just a bug?

No bug.

Water wheel, chimney, cauldron: tiger button is an easter egg configuration that is supposed to do exactly what you saw. It changes your character gender.

The correct horse configuration is: cow bezoar, cauldron, conductor, chimney, water wheel, tiger button.
