Off the top of my head (don't worry about the examples; I know there are several in each category), these are the types of settings I have played/heard about:
1. Medieval Fantasy (ex: Dragon Age: Origins, Dark Souls, and Baldur's Gate)
2. Historical Fantasy (ex: Darklands)
3. Post-Apocalyptic (ex: Fallout and Wasteland)
4. Horror (ex: Planescape: Torment, Dead State, and VtM: B)
5. Space/Future (ex: Mass Effect, KoTOR, and Deus Ex)
6. Steampunk (ex: Arcanum)
7. Sea/Pirates (ex: Risen 2: Darkwaters).

Feel free to name your own settings that I either forgot about or haven't played/heard about. Also, give a brief explanation as to why you like that certain setting.

Anyways, mine would definitely be the post-apocalyptic setting. I love seeing how different civilizations start to rise from the ashes of the old world. Seeing guns, spears, and lasers all within a torn landscape is amazingly epic. I don't care so much about the exploration aspect, but the human interaction that takes place within such a brutal area is my favorite part. I loved the little war that was waged between Killian and Gizmo, the tyrant versus the libertarian (this would make better sense if you know about the original ending of Junktown).

1. Medieval Fantasy
2. Space/Future
3. Steampunk
4. Historical Fantasy

I don't really like post apocalyptic settings at all, although FONV managed to overcome that.

The rest I can take or leave.

My 2 favs are...

Horror & Medieval Fantasy (d&d universe though.. I like the weird creatures & the crazy variety of them)

But i do enjoy the others you listed also. (haven't played a steampunk game though..Arcanum is on my to play list though)

I usually prefer Medieval, but I will play anything as long as it's done well, regardless the setting.

leaning towards fantasy mainly because RPGs were originally created for that genre and sometimes when they do other genres it's just fantasy disguised to look like another genre.
But I'm happy with almost* any genre if it's done properly
(* No -I do not want the "My Little Pony" RPG)
More Far-eastern Fantasy (like Jade Empire) would be good

Steampunk and Science Fiction. With Sci-Fi, I love settings involving foreign, unknown worlds. I'm also big into the Secret-Science-Facility environments. Combining Medieval and Victorian Era settings in Arcanum really works well, I love that mix.

No, I do not want the "My Little Pony" RPG.

Friendship is Magicka? That would make the Bronies faint, I think. I wouldn't be surprised to see a mod of Skyrim that lets you roleplay as the horse.

Steampunk and space. I also like horror. Still, the best is definitely sci-fi setting.

1. Post Apocalyptic
2. Fantasy
3. Haven't ever played any RPGs set in steampunk setting, but that would be cool

I don't quite follow how "horror" is considered a setting. Can you explain a bit more? Isn't it more of a genre / sub-genre?

Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth is one of my all time favorites, set in the 1920s New England and based on the Lovecraft mythos. I'd love to see a Victorian era horror RPG as well, but I'm not aware of anything out there.

I'm partial to Post Apocalyptic but I can go anywhere if the game is good.

Sci Fi or medieval/dark fantasy. Definitely not high fantasy, which has run its course.

I would love to see some totally new settings.

Why not an RPG set in the corporate world where you play a middle manager paper pusher?

Or something else set in the modern world. Even though it might lack some kind of epic quality, there are lots of interesting stories to be told.

1. Medieval fantasy
2. Horror
3. Cyberpunk
4. Space sci-fi

I like the concept of post-apocalyptic settings, but unfortunately most games go down the desolate wasteland route which I find really dull, or make it overly sci-fi. I'd love to see more games that show a more contemporary world where civilization has fallen apart.

I see a lot of you list Horror games. The only game I've played like that was Vampire, the Masquerade Bloodlines.

Any suggestions? What's new, and what is something good from the past.

Thanks

The Dining RoomImage IPB

My opinion on Video games is they have such a variation in quality, that making a specific choice based on genre alone is impossible for me.

5) Space Future -I love looking forward, and I love the real limitless nature of this setting, the imagination has little bounds.

(although lol you failed to mention modern :o)
