Some serial killer he is. Hawke could get it done(look at Keran.) lol

It was still dark when he left home, and he accidentally picked up a rubber prop knife instead of a misericorde.

Knife against black metal armor, the armor deflects the knife - makes sense to me. Besides there is more to the black metal armour and black metal sword than meets the eye - as Sandal would say "Enchantment". Cole's victims have always been prisoners, defenseless and with no armor. It is hardly surprising that his first encounter with a battle trained, fully armed and armored Lord Seeker does not come off well. For once realism triumphs over hero character super luck and invicibility. However, Cole is nothing if not a quick learner - next time he takes on Lambert it is on his terms.

The answer is in the sewers it was not a dialog/cut scene. Thus no murder knife. Now later . . .
