I tried out that Amgarrak DLC and imported my level 21 mage that finished Origins. I got as far as a room with 4 golems in it. They all activate at once and there is no way to fight them one at at time. Even with my usual tactics of retreating into a narrow hallway, they overwelm my party by throwing boulders and slamming me around. There is absolutely no conceivable way to defeat them. I'm playing on Normal difficulty and I can't even kill ONE of them before everybody goes down.
Golems of Amgarrak: hit a roadblock here

I don't recall, but 21 sounds extremely low. Did you play Awakening? I swear my wardens were in the 30s when I got to Golems. Even then, Golems is not easy. It's even worse on Nightmare. Golems is by far the toughest part of DAO. Could try lowering the difficulty more. Is this PC or console? The former is by far harder than the latter. Even then, it's no piece of cake.
What type of mage are you? What type of gear do you have? How many folks do you have with you yet? (There are a few rooms with multiple golems, so a number here narrows it.) Have you tweaked those special friends including the one you find certain items for?
Trying to throw stuff out there while not breaking the whole "No spoilers" thing. Again, this is the hardest part. The final battle is insane.

I am playing on PC and haven't started Awakening yet. I just assumed that level 21 was sufficient because the module gives you a choice between importing a character or creating a level 20 character. My mage deals mainly with offensive elemental magic.
I am at the first encounter with multiple golems in the room opposite the blue-swirly-door and I haven't gotten Brogan yet.

That fight is tough, but it's far from the hardest encounter in Golems of Amgarrak.
I've never tried GofA with anything except a Level 35 character decked out in the best gear from Awakening. I'm sorry, but I don't think you can finish it at your level, not without some broken Arcane Warrior build.

You can easily do GOA with a non-import character, and zero advanced (unlockable) specs on nightmare mode. However, you'll need to kind of "plan ahead" with your character builds because certain talents and spells will make or break a number of the fights.
Here are some hints about GOA: characters that are built for the campaigns are often not as useful for GOA as characters that are built specifically for GOA. An example would be a blood-mage. Blood wound is really nice in the campaigns because almost nothing resists it. However, if all your fights are versus bloodless enemies, the entire blood mage specialization offers very limited utility. Then blood mage only saves on lyrium pots and makes already doable fights even easier. So, unless you're using a LOT of sustainables and thus have no mana pool, you're better off without it in GOA.
Think about how to handle fights where every fight has creatures that are as anoyingly immune to your abilities as possible and build your team accordingly. If you do that, you'll have a MUCH easier time of it in GOA.

Order your party to Hold position and send one person in alone. They can activate the golems and retreat. If you have a rogue who can go stealth, even better.

You are at one of the easiest fights in Golems. An elemental mage at your level really doesn't have a nice shot a beating it. It was a struggle for me to the first time, but after that, you kind of go into Awakening knowing the hell to follow. So you prepare.
Take your dude from DAO. Run through Awakening. Then play Golems. I think whatever you happen to be carrying comes over as well, so bring a little extra armor and all. Maybe even strip your party just before you beat the final boss in Awakening.

'GoA' was extremely difficult for me even in Normal mode with a level 32 Arcane Warrior. Not sure trying to beat it at level 21 would work.
These golem mobs keep spamming Hurl; it's incredibly frustrating. I had my team engage in close combat, throwing bombs liberally and kept healing them (Runic Golem is an absolutely useless waste of space), while using Cone of Cold and Hand of Winter whenever possible. I'd also cast Blizzard at the first opportunity. Managed to make it out of that one somehow, but this was nothing compared to what lay ahead.

Have your party hold position near the font (don't bother sending a person near the door, they get pulled back to the font on activation). Activate the font. Take the character nearest to the door and RUN all the way to another font (the blue one is nearest), and activate it. Your other characters get ported to you (and res if dead), the golems remain stuck there and you've gotten out of it without fighting. Use your golem's cleansing aura to remove injuries.
