Hey everyone. I just started playing Dragon Age:Origins. I hope this is the right place to ask this....

Is the downloadable content modules woven into the original game or are they add-on expansion packs to be played seperately and/or after?

I guess what I mean is... can I get an item from say the Witch Hunt module and use during the Origins story line?

Thanks!:wizard:

There are some woven into DAO. Others are played after.

DAO then Awakening then Golems then Witch Hunt.
Darkspawn and Song can be played anytime. I recommend after you finish the rest.

What you unlock from the expansion show up in DAO and/or Awakening. I recommend playing without those items once. Play through the game as above, importing your warden from one into the next. Get the full story then enjoy the perks of having played teh full game.

You can get items from Witch Hunt or GoA or L's Song etc and use them during the Origins story line, but unless you've played the Origins story line first it's not recommended.  If you played Witch Hunt, the last story, before the main game it won't make much sense and ruin a lot of plot twists. Not worth it for an item or 2. The items are really intended to make subsequent playthroughs easier to get through, not your first.

Also you can take items from Origins to Awakening, but not from Awakening to Origins.

The expansion pack, Awakening, follows about 6 months after the end of Origins. Golems of Amgarrak DLC follows after this, as Witch Hunt DLC is the last adventure of The Warden.

So go:
Origins > Awakening > GoA > Witch Hunt

Darkspawn Chronicles is set in a parallel universe where the Darkspawn win, set at the last battle of the game, and you can play this any time. I would suggest you play it either after just before you complete Origins though, so you get the references and know the characters and places.

Leliana's Song is a story from Leliana's history. You can also play this any time, but you might want to wait until you've met Leliana and talked to her/done her quests so you know what's going on.

As for the three extra Origins campaigns, do them early on if you want the items, spells and companions to help you with the game, but in terms of chronology:

Warden's Keep - any time during the game, as it's just a venture into an old keep and the story is separate from the main.
The Stone Prisoner - probably best to do before you go to Orzammar to do A Paragon of Her Kind, as the new companion's story is mixed in with the main quest there and they have lines and scenes if you bring them along with you. But, again, can be done any time.
Return to Ostagar - set some considerable time after Ostagar, so is more effective if played late in the game, like after collecting all the treaties. Also, the last possible recruit-able companion has some connection to this story and interesting to bring along.

I played all the non-campaign DLCs first, starting with Golems of Amgarrak.  There are some story elements that won't make sense until after you do the DOA main campaign, but it's hardly jarring -- just non-linear.  Considering that the main campaigns also have non-linear elements, it works out pretty good, actually.  So, feel free to play them in any order as you see fit.

I'd strongly urge anyone familiar with RPGs to just start right out with Nightmare mode.  Bioware games are all insanely easy and this one is no exception.  If you are new to CRPGs, don't feel bad if you struggle with non-nightmare; you've got a huge learning curve ahead of you.  Once you climb it and look back from the top of that curve, though, you'll see what I mean.  ^~

OTH, if like me, you never play any game in anything but maximum difficulty level and mildly resent beating things without any setbacks at all, I'd strongly advise you to do Golems of Amgarrak on nightmare first.  That's the only time you'll ever have any struggles at all with DA difficulty.  The rest will still be a lot of fun for the story and character interactions, but there's no challenge outside of GOA/nightmare as a newbie.

Well, I suppose you could solo for a little more challenge, but then you skip all the fun companion interplay, which is a good chunk of what makes Bioware games worth playing.  The intraparty banter is hilarious at times.

Some items from the other campaigns carry over into Origins directly, just appearing in your inventory like the Blood Dragon Armor does. There are a couple items from Witch Hunt and Golems of Amgarrak that come to mind.

There's also an item that you can unlock by finding items in Leliana's Song that will behave the same way. Since Leliana's Song expands on the main plotline and reveals details about a character that aren't obvious right away, at least wait until Leliana has talked to you about her past in Origins.

I don't personally think that Golems of Amgarrak or Darkspawn Chronicles really reveal anything important, but they make a lot more sense if you've played Origins or Awakening already, not to mention you can import your Warden and their equipment. I personally haven't actually bothered finishing Darkspawn Chronicles, it just doesn't grab me.

I'd wait to play Witch Hunt until I had a (preferably male) Warden run through Origins, since otherwise you haven't really "met" Morrigan to be chasing after her, which makes no sense.

Warden's Keep and Return to Ostagar offer some really useful equipment, particularly if you get them early in the game. I personally think that playing through Return to Ostagar and Warden's Keep just after leaving Lothering is perfectly acceptable narratively as well, and it's what I've done in the game I intend to carry through the other modules.

Yes, but that requires a product code which digital copies may or may not have.

The items you get from the dlc ruin the game imo. You get armour that is better then most of what's in the first 3/4 of the game, so you end up just wearing the same suit all game. Boring.

It depends on which one you're asking about. Awakening, which is the biggest DLC is meant to be played after Origins and you can import your completed Origins file into it. After that there's The Golems of Amgarrak and then Witch Hunt. The Darkspawn Chronicles is a what-if DLC that can be played whenever and Leliana's Song is a prequel. The rest of the DLC is integrated into the main game.

I was just about to make a new thread about this as i had only just purchased the original game from the store a few days ago just out of pure boredom waiting for ME3. (I will admit it has engaging gameplay and story but does not hold a candle to ME's)

So to play things in the ''proper'' order, Origins, Awakening, GoA, Witch Hunt, Chronicles ... not sure when for Ostogar though. After Origins or Awakening?

As for pretty much everything else, anytime. I got around to getting and doing Shale's quest post-Orzammar (i didnt know anything about her until it was too late, but no big deal IMO).

I will most likely do Leliana's campaign tonight as she is my girl's romance and ive just arrived at Denerim after gaining the Dalish, Dwarves and Magi on board.

(one of the biggest annoyances to me personally is the sheer length and size of this game - I swear its as big as friggin Skyrim and i never bothered with the side missions in that game as it just took far too long)
