I love action in my RPG’s if combat is done well and the game plays like an RPG.

I don’t like games like ME2 as the game cannot be played like an RPG so never really care about the combat.

If the role playing is good then i don’t really mind if combat is action based or turn based.
One of my favourite games is Star Ocean: Till The End of Time as i love the combat, for me the combat is much better than the DA games, combat is turn based but it plays like action combat.

Also, I'd add that diversity sounds good - in the big picture.

As there aren't that many "classical-like" RPG's out there, I'm quite craving for one.

So in conclusion, I'd say I don't care about action/non-action as a whole, both can be done well - besides, I gather that the core of the game remains in a certian "feel", or artistic vision rather than game-play as in combat. But as there are few of turn-based ones, and cause I tend find them better, overall, my vote goes for the turn-based RPG in general...

I'd like just enough action in my RPG so that it stays RPG rather than becoming an action game with RPG elements (although don't get me wrong, I like some games that are action with RPG elements).

Real time action combat is something I like if executed properly, however if done incorrectly it is just fail, TBH I like both turn based and action RPGs and everything in between about equally, for me the story is the selling point of an RPG (if they can immerse me in the story, they have succeeded in making a good game).

No flameshield? You brave, brave person...

OT: I prefer TB in RPGs (or RTwP) because it allows you to get a better idea of what your up against and gives you more time to come up with the best way to deal with the situation. As a disclaimer there are plenty of action RPGS that I played that I liked (The Witcher 2 and and Fallout: New Vegas for example).

I don't want action gameplay at all.  Slower, more tactical gameplay and party based only. I also prefer party based where you have a decently large amount of choices of characters to be in the party, with limited spots, not like the hubs you get in the console era bioware games.

I really don't enjoy games like COD, Halo, or God of War. There just not fun.  PC Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 though will always have a special place in my heart.  With Bioware in the action scene, I've lost all hope in getting any new game that I can enjoy, as they were the last big company doing such games, I feel rather abandoned.

On a side note, TBS games are dead as well, only furthering my disappointment in todays game.

Gothic 1-2-3, Risen style or Witcher 1,2 style.

Anymore action i dont want,if i feel action-thirsty, i can always play God of wars, Darksiders, Brutal Legend.

Edit:
Completey agree with The58th also.
And Sid Meier's Ufo remake is coming with neat Turn based system :)
Or try Frozen Synapse.

For me it depends on the atmosphere, day time not much preferred about this game. But late night even an average game will be shown as a interesting stuff to me. Lol

I liked the turn-base nature of the Fallout games, but they did something magical with their system because I usually hate full turn-base games. I really like when games do a mixture of both elements like Rome: Total War and Origins with their pause and play system. Origins was VERY clunky, though.

As for the length of action, I'd actually rather have less fighting and more dialogue options. I liked the landsmeet in Origins, and I wish that their were more parts of RPGs that dealt with diplomatic dialogue.

Unless the game has a very tight combat system like Demon's/Dark Souls, I really hate full action games like God of War and Ninja Gaiden.

I have no preference - it really depends on a game by game basis. The fact the combat is so varied between games in the RPG genre is part of what makes the genre so great.

I remain pretty open since I've enjoyed dialogue heavy games such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age and combat heavy games such as Fable and Dark Souls.

Personally if they're going to do action based combat I say do it right. Jade Empire was off to a start but it was pretty clumsy. Especially for a game heavy on martial arts. Dragon Age 2 had the right idea although the whole exploding body bits was a little too much.

I'm really liking the way they did Kingdoms of Amalur in terms of combat. Very action-y but very surreal at the same time. Dark Souls was also quite impressive in that you had to time your parries and strikes and focus on enemy weaknesses rather than button mash or rely on magic/equipment. Would've loved to see a little more flash but as is it was pretty good.

However I also liked the turn based combat of Temple of Elemental Evil as well.

So I'd say it really doesn't matter to me. :-) I like action but as far as HOW the action is done I remain open. Turn based, strategy, it's all good to me.

Little thread ressurection here, but I wanted to ask. Now that Dragon's Dogma is out, how would you rate it's real time combat?

Not a fan of the term "Action RPG" as it has been applied to Torchlight and Diablo, etc. Perhaps I'm missing something, but those games don't appear to have any role playing component at all.

I thought Jade Empire had the potential for a really good combat system though but it kinda felt like they didn't make it all the way.

Did you ever play Rocksteady Studio's Batman Arkham City with the freeflow combat system? I mentioned in this thread on the Jade Empire board that if Bioware were to impelent a system similar to it for the sequel, then we'd have a great game indeed.

I bought it during the Steam winter sale and tried it for about 20 minutes, just to make sure it was working properly. I'm sure I'm missing something, but the combat just felt like button mashing to me. There didn't seem to be any strategic aspect to it other than "press the button when the blue circle appears" and "keep pressing the button"

yes you can buttion smashing in Batman AC but by doing so you wont get high combo score. Without high combo score you barely are able get many experience points. To me BAC's combat concept is ideal for action rpgs, since your leveling up depends on your combat skills. The thing I found lacking in most action rpgs is the experience points you got are irrelevant to how you fight. if so, why we even need action in rpgs?

Another good example is deus ex which is another ideal case for action rpgs imo, since the expeirence points you can get are totally determined by how you are dealing with each encounter.
