This month’s challenge is “Rogues and other Shadow-walkers”.  NPCs, creatures, bosses who rule and run the underworld. Weapons and tools of the trade. Not just daggers and an old icon of fat, clumsy picks, but tools for slavers and torturers, smugglers and cat-burglers. Tiles of dark and twisty alleys, crowded markets and a rooftop landscape where only the most surefooted assassin would run. Effects and animations for garroting, poisoning (hands to throat or chest and a better spasm), blowing a cloud of powder in an enemies face, more and more-inventive traps. The sounds of a "pssst!" or a bawd calling his living wares. Scripts for bodyguards named Bones, Sticks and Mac the Knife.

This theme was suggested by Vibrant Penumbra.

Once again, the possibilities for content types are pretty open; NPCs, Creatures, Items, Tiles, Effects, Animations, Sounds & Scripts.

Guidelines:
  • It must be fully working in game.
  • Use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine, though state-of-the-art amateur's work would require 100% original work, but that's up to you.
  • Teamwork is welcome.
  • Beginners most welcome, don't be afraid, just try, you'll be surprised!
  • All submissions must be finished, working, and emailed to me (NWNCCCMakers @ gmail.com) or a non-Vault link provided by February 1, 2012 (which is a Wednesday) at 10 AM EST. Sooner than that is perfectly fine too. ;)
Some things you could include in the download/email that would make packaging everything up easier and faster (otherwise I will just pester you with questions!):
  • 2da lines needed.
  • Screenshot for use on the vault page (this also gives me hints on how to display the new goodie).
  • Portraits (if needed) of your new goodie. ** Placeables and monsters should include a portrait. **
  • Inventory icons (if needed) of your new goodie.
  • Any credits you would like listed.
  • If this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally optional).
  • Also if you would like an invite to the CC Makers group, send Rolo Kipp a friend invite. The group is nothing spectacular, mostly just documentation on 2da lines.
  • If you are doing tileset content, *please* let me know ahead of time so I can get you the set and itp files to work with. I’m horrible at merging those so this bit you will need to provide.
Remember, the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity and surprise!

If you have concerns/questions about this month’s Challenge please post in this thread.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or wish to submit ideas/themes for future monthly Challenges, please post in its thread here.
***When submitting a new theme, please provide a title and short summary of the theme.***

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge. We'll try to help!

Have no fear and join the fun!

And finally, you can vote for February’s theme right here. The voting dead line is February 1, 2012 at 8 AM EST.

*dreamy sigh* I didn't have to do the post this morning. Ahhhhh. *hugs Rolo*

No idea yet what mischief I'll come up with. Maybe I'll finally script the dreaded noogie trap. *cackles gleefully*

I am going to attempt to make a table placeable.  With three overturned bowls.  That move.  Yes, I'll be attempting to make a shell game table.

animations:
default/off: bowls lined up at edge
off-to-on: bowls start shifting around on the table
on: bowls stop shifting, lined up in middle of table
on-to-off: bowls are moved back to the edge, revealing what was underneath

Along with the table, I'm going to try to make a set of three visual effects that line up with the table so that a script can randomly place a simple crystal under the final resting place of one of the three bowls.
:bandit:

B) Yes, rogues do often go stealthy to steal things or stick sharp objects into the backs of others, but there are con men out there that ply their trade openly.

Maybe I'll just script the whole thing, too.  I'm thinking a single script that get's activated by a choice in a conversation.  Maybe have the final position based partially on a Spot check by the PC.  I try to do things with as few scripts as possible to help prevent module resource bloat, so options will likely be set on either the table or the NPC conversation owner via integers and/or strrings.

I'm hoping this works out as I envision it.  It may just take most of the month to get everything (placeable + VFXs + conversation + script) working properly together.

Edit: Sorry for the kind of rambling a couple paragraphs ago.  Kind of a combination of typing as I think this stuff up, notes for me to check later, and (for newer content makers that are curious) a look into my train of thought when making something I've never done before.

Anyone fancy a hide-in-able cupbord or two? I don't know how to do armour and such but a wearable tree would be a good ambush tool...

Borden, an enterable wardrobe sounds like a cool idea. I bet I could script that with AID using existing placeables. For some reason the idea reminds me of old MOOs like lambdamoo. Anyhow...

I made a special window you could hide s ghost behind for my diety stained glass windows. Talk to your diety when you pray sort of thing. Shouldn't be hard to make a cupboard a player could fit in.just need to make a U shaped pwk to stop clipping.

Shell game? *laughing* Love it!

Ohhh... loads of fun uses for that wardrobe Borden. Great idea.

@henesua - MOOs... wow, now there is a game I haven't heard of in ages. Right along with MUDs. ;)

<already looking...>

I asked Cestus to do some real traps. He said "Tricky. 'Sides, been done." and drank more of my best ale.
I asked him to do some tripwires and little trap *clues*. He said "Nay, 'tis 'neath me." and ate some of my best cheese.
I asked him to weave a cloak of real shadows. He said "Can nae see it." and put his rusty greaves on my best footrest.
I asked him to put together a decent cathouse. He said "Git yer mind outta tha gutter, old man." and smiled at my housekeeper.
I asked him to train up a couple bruiser bodyguards. He said "Ama-chores all they'd be." and insulted my steward.
I asked him to slap together a rooftop tileset. He said "That's a bit over me head, wizard." and smudged my ceiling with his pipe smoke.

Then I asked him to build a better vault. He said "Lock that'un in. I'll do it." and took all my gold he could carry.

Goddess, but that dwarf is strong!

Tis a base canard, old man!

Me greaves ha' never been rusty, yer steward's smarmy an' yer housekeeper's a proper dwarven dish.

If ye want this done, ye'll leave off makin' fun o' an old dwarf!

*grumpily pours himself another tankard full*

I might make a placeable/scripted solution for timed spike wall traps. It's been on the list of things my module needs doing anyway. If I get time I may throw in a sliding bookcase.

Six... how about a revolving bookcase? Like the one Gene Wilder is struck by in Young Frakenstein.http://movieclips.co...he-candle-back/

Traps, oh yes!

I am sooooo tempted to do the "Duck. Duck. Duck" trap (name the reference for a wiggly O ) :D

In fact...  I will!

Aloha!

Hello, all! I was visited yesterday by a surly little dwarf (all dwarves seem surly to me) who made me an offer I couldn't refuse. He said "ye should participate in the monthly CC challenge, if ye know what's good for ye". Seeing as how I'm a tall man, and most of my weaknesses are at perfect striking height for a dwarf, I told him I would, then he drank all my ale and left. Must've been the same guy that hit Rolo's place. ;)

So I was trying to decide what to make. TheSpiritedLass's request for wanted posters sounds like something I could do, but I think I was invited to do something a little more three-dimensional. A creature would be alright for this, wouldn't it? I was thinking about a "clockwork" assassin, based on an idea Tarot Redhand gave me a while back, using a heavily modified version of my minogon reskin, made into a hooded human-like creature with a Maug face that would use the a_ba animations. I'm pretty sure that would work for this theme.

I've actually started playing with that idea already, so I hope it works for you guys. As I think about it being implemented as something in-game, it would have to be "magically silenced", with some sort of artifact built-in that would allow it to become invisible, sort of a steam punk Predator/Terminator (insert evil laugh here).

<winding up...>

Like those things in Hellboy? I *like* this idea, actually.

And don't let Cestus get to you :-) Throw some dancing girls at him and you'll see a 400 year-old dwarf blush and stammer and run.

He fights like a demon, but *everyone* has weaknesses ;-)

@Pen - Okay, you have all sorts of strange images going through my head with that one. What the heck is a Duck. Duck. Duck. trap?

@Izk - Welcome to the fun and mischief!

Hmm sounds like we should make Cestus the chief recruiter. *evil grin*

Well, it involves ducks... (which should be fun) :P

And mud (which has me frowning pensively) <_<

And a really long, sharp sickle-blade (which delights me) :D

The hard part will be giving PCs the chance to survive...

TTFN!

Hide-in-able Closet done, Rotating shelves type door tile next I think...

Added later: Not Rotating but sliding, one for the library and one for the rich castle interiors.

Those are very nice, Borden Haelven.

For the bookshelf, is that placed in a doorway so that you can enter? Or is it placeable trickery?

Love the closet/armoire.space.

Oh I love the rolling opening bookcase, a lot better then just a door for secret doors. Give me a idea of similar ones that you could use just a plane with the wall texture(same texture as the tileset wall) on it that slides to open the darkness. Be nice secret doors. :) then we slid it so it barely peeking out.

@Amethyst The bookcase is an actual doorway feature tile. I'm working one one for the Rich tiles as well. I've used the standard NWN shelves so you can place shelves as red herrings to throw the player.

The Gothic Interior tileset has doors like this - just a section of wall that acts like a door. The problem with that set however (for me anyway) is that the secret doors are easy to spot. They respond to lighting differently than the walls around them. It really annoys me and so I don't use them. I would love to see secret doors (built in to the tileset) that truly blend in. Perhaps they'd have to be non selectable?

The community placeables pack (I hope my memory is right on this) however had some very nice placeable secret doors for the classic dungeon tileset. Perhaps a few placeables done in that style (for a few popular tilesets) would work well.

I'd noticed that myself. I'm going for a script based solution that will make it un-useable if the player fails a spot check. Examining it will just give the stardard "it's a set of shelves" description and the door will be locked and need a non-existant key. It flags itself as a door on mouse over, time for a rethink...<_<
