So? RPGs don't always have to be about the player specifically making their own character.

This has long been my position, as well.

As such, either the game needs to let us define the character ourselves, or it needs to give us exhaustive detail of the pre-written background.

Since the cost of providing that exhaustive detail would be, I think, prohibitive, the only viable option is a player-defined character.

So why do so many people here seem to think otherwise?

Also this video is funny

Honestly, DA2 has all the things you

listed. It just doesn't do them well, which differentiates between a

good RPG and a bad RPG. If an fps has bad shooting mechanics, do we

really say it's not an fps?

No
because we hate fps they are just for stupid frat boys the "COD crowd"
and are too easy for use hardcore game players. They are are made for
the simple minded console players (Ingoring the fact the who FPS  gerne
and Mutliplayer was made possible by  what PC could do at the of  time
Doom and  the interent)

So we  dismiss this logic  because it
make sense but does not allow us  re-affrim our notions of the evil EA
and  catering to the dumb COD  crowd.

sarcasm aside.

No we don't becasue that would not make any sense.

As a person who goes to a school with many men in fraternities, those "frat boys" are more interested in getting alkololz and ****ezz than playing CoD.

Killer...I was  being  very scarastic. and making fun of  some of the agruments that have been presented by some of the posters  as why Mass Effect is not an RPG .

i was far from being serious

and there is know way i would be believe that  because if I did not believed that I would jump out of myself, break the very laws of reality  and kick my own ass.

Again so what? Your basically arguing against me likeing to play someone who is partially predetermined. I already explained the reason why the other way isn't bad. I would state a flaw in that sort of roleplay but it was already done.

No, I'm not. I'm a fan of predetermined characters, at least to a degree. It's when you make the character predetermined and then hide how the character is predetermined that's the problem. Like if Shepard would always auto-choose without player input to leave Ashley on Virmire. That's what I'm getting at.

Sylvius the Mad,

I think BioWare would rather have us come up with our own detail to Shepard's pre-written history. I noticed on Tumblr, how everyone has different head-cannons...and that includes Shepard's background. I even have my own finally after thinking about my Shepard's Earthborn background, as well as the reason why he has the Ruthless background. .

That was a choice to leave Ashley on Virmire and save Kaidan. Did you want the choice to go after her and get killed and the process?

They're RPGs, they're games where you play a role so it fits the very definition.

I'd love to see examples of character development in Super Mario...

On the topic of Legend of Zelda, I finally got around to playing Majora's Mask after beating Skyward Sword. Terrific game, I gotta say.

Considering that's not what you said I don't feel compelled to provide examples.

Ah yes "In the knee. If you're going to use that overused meme, at least get it right" we have dismissed this claim

I barely got to play Majora's Mask. I've always felt like I missed out on something great. I wish I still had my N64.

Is those games you just play as a character, in Mass Effect you build it.
.
Anyway, anyone who doesn't see the difference between Mass Effect shouldn't be able to read and write.

I was the same way. It always looked weird to me so after Ocarina I decided to stay away. But then my Zelda addiction just kicked in and it's the only 3D Zelda I hadn't touched yet. I was surprised; the masks/3 Day cycle really do a great job of adding fun new features to the series. The story's a bit darker as well (as LoZ games go).

Why is it that an RPG which involves shooting gets labelled an "action-RPG" or a "role-playing shooter"? Why should it matter if combat in an RPG is done with guns or melee weapons or spells? I've never heard Dragon Age:Origins or the Witcher described as "action-RPGs" or "role-playing hack-and-slash" games. This just seems to be more evidence of anti-shooter bias on the part of RPG fanboys.

People are pretty ignorant of those things sometimes. Not surprising since DAO looks like a traditional RPG to many.

No, you misunderstand what I'm trying to say. I mean, KoTOR 2's approach is like preventing Shepard from making that choice and instead having the designers make it for you.
