Nope, it's only an RPG if it features mature full frontal nudity like The Witcher 2.

You were quoting a bunch of unrelated statements, which part was factually wrong?
RPGs are about counting numbers
Mass Effect is about shooting things

Tell us your definition of RPG, and we'll try our best to deduce if ME fits itOtherwise, I can see a flamewar brewing. The topic is *pretty* controversial to say the least.

The Mass Effect is a good story with great characters.
If people are trying to find games that offer specific types of gameplay, then it absolutely does matter into which categoriy it falls (assuming those categorical distinctions tell us anything about gameplay). It shouldn't really matter which shelf it goes on in shops.
I disagree. ME is more of an Adventure game than it is an Roleplaying game. There's almost no roleplaying component. The player simply finds him way through a pre-written story with very little control over whi his character is or why he does what he does.Feanor_II wrote...
Hybrid between 3rd Person Shooter and RPG.
ME1 is more balanced between this two, ME2 tends a bit more towards TPS.

Mass Effect bears a stronger resemblance to King's Quest than it does to the Gold Box RPGs.
It's not an RPG, period. It's at best an action RPG. I love ME2, don't get me wrong. But RPG is simply the wrong label.LGTX wrote...

What I meant is that it shouldn't mean as much as this community makes it out to be. The genre should just be a broad definition of what the game is, and RPG or action-RPG more than suffice for the ME games. However, the genre isn't important enough to warrant these endless debates/arguments on BSN about how much of an RPG ME1 or ME2 is. We should all be able to agree that in a shop the most suitable section for both is the RPG section, and that regardless of how strictly they follow genre archetypes they are both good games.Sylvius the Mad wrote...

RPG is just a word (well, acronym). It only has the meaning you ascribe to it. So play the games and see if they fit your personal definition of a Role-Playing Game. And if one or both does not, then don't come on here and butthurt about it. Again, it's just a meaningless buzzword used to vaguely classify games so that people don't have to take the time to explain the game's mechanics whenever describing it.

That's pretty much on spot. The definition changed. But some people don't want to let original definition go. And I can't blame them.Thoth_Amon wrote...
