Hey, Ive recently rebuilt my PC and have trying to play DA:O in it for the past week and its frustrating the hell outta me. Im finding that unless graphic detail is set to low the game is all skippy and seems to jump rather than flow smoothly anywhere where there is more than a few characters present.(Texture detail and AA make no difference to the frame rate whether on or off, just gfx detail affects preformance) The fps however is sitting nicely on about 60fps. My old and new system blitz the max requirements and more over I can play games like Crysis 2, Saints Row 3, Skyrim and even ArmA2 well on high detail settings. I'm currently running an Intel I7 2.8, NVidia GeForce GTX580 1.5GB (Overclocked), 8GB Ram, A Solid State for Windows 7 and a 1TB Black Edition WD HDD for everything else. The game ran far better on my Radeon HD5780 than on the GTX580. Is this an NVidia Problem? DXDIAG and GFX Stability Tests show nothing out of the ordinary and FRAPS shows 60fps so I am unsure as to what the problem is my PC or the game. Thanks.

Right, I shall try this again.
My System:
Windows Professional (x64 bit) Service Pack 1
Intel I7 2.8Ghz Processor
NVidia Geforce GTX580 1.5GB (Overclocked 797Mhz) Driver Version: 285.62
8GB Ram
Game Version : Dragon Age: Origins Collectors w/ Awakening and all DLC patched to 1.04
Problem: Game Frame rate is fine however it does not run smoothly in populated areas, such as Kings Camp Ostagar. By smoothly I mean the game appears to be lagging (in want for a better term) yet according to 3rd party programms such as FRAPS Frame rate is at 60fps (with vert sync on). Have adjusted graphics settings in both NVidia Control Panel and In Game, AA and Tex detail does not affect it, however turing the graphic detail to low removes the problem. Have tried a driver roll back as well as fresh install to no avail. DXDIAG pagefile isnt that high at about 1.5gig. I had mods but removed them with the fresh install. This is the only game I am having the problem with, Crysis 2 and Skyrim for example all run fine on Ultra and high settings.
Thanks

You may need to run a search of the archives for the way that quad core CPU systems have to have some cores "hidden" from the game. That's the only thing I can think of, but I haven't seen any need for more than a dual core so far, and simply didn't pay that much attention to the quad core situation.

Quick way is to use the Task Manager and change the CPU Affinity there (right-click the DA applications/processes and select CPU affinity). Somewhat of a bummer to have to do every time you play but I'm not sure of another way.
More detail may be found in thread http://social.biowar...8/index/6265850 (which incidentally is a sticky in this forum). Scroll down and ready through "performance issues".

Thanks for the quick replies - have already investigated the resource manager in the task manager and DA:O usage - it seems to be utalising 4 of my 8 CPU's, but has full access to the other 4 should it need it. Usually 2 CPU's sit parked and 2 are in use for backround processes but the 2 parked sometimes come out of retirement to help in intense areas of the game apparently. After further testing last night I found the only way to improve it at all was to allow the application to decide Anisotropic filtering and not the NVidia Control Panel. Other than that no other settings or changes whether set to all low both in game and in Nvidia control panel or all high seem to make any difference to the game. It just skips along.

AFAIK, the i7 is just a plain quad-core, but each core can split a thread in half, it's called "Hyperthreading", and Windows can't tell the difference too easily.

I know that was just trying to reply in simple terms to make it easier to determine whether there was an issue between the game and the CPU. I build, repair and sell PC's so I'm savvy with the technical side of Computing (Just dont ask me to code
).

Patch 1.05 is designed to fix DLC authorization issues, but you may find it will improve performance slightly... especially in terms of load times.
In your case, I would suggest turning off all of the "enhancements" in the Nvidia control panel and see if that improves performance. Also, sometimes DA:O does not react well to overclocked NVidia graphics cards... even "factory overclocked" ones. There's more on this amongst the many troubleshooting links in the solutions round-up (linked in my sig below).

Thanks for the reply - have only herd negitive things about 1.05 though so might wait on that one. Will try to fiddle with the NVidia control panel further but generally no matter what I do the situation seems to remain. Thanks again.

UPDATE: I have installed 1.05 patch, all Direct X 9, 10 and 11 components, rolled back dirvers and reinstalled game, gfx drivers, all patches, ran clean without any mods, fiddled for countless hours with the NVidia control panel and underclocked the GFX card and there is 0 change execpt it skips now even on lowest settings, yet Fraps registers FPS under vertical sync as between 50-60 and without vert sync between 50-120fps. Denerim market appears to be worst affected area yet the lowest the FPS got was 48. Am really clueless as to why the GTX580 is behaving so strangely towards this game alone? If anyone has any Ideas I would appreciate it. Thanks.

One thing you can try, if you already have not, is to force the game to run in DX9. I've heard of some older games not being able to run well under DX10 and 11. I'm guessing you're running Windows 7?
Copied from another board:
Go to C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age. Create a shortcut for the
DAOriginsLauncher. Right click on the shortcut and go to properties. On
the shortcut tab in properties, the Target will display "C:\\Program
Files (x86)\\Dragon Age\\DAOriginsLauncher.exe"
Type -dx9 after it with a space in between. It should look like this
"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Dragon Age\\DAOriginsLauncher.exe" -dx9
Also, you could run a program called "Game Booster" to disable any background processes that might be springing up while you play, such as antivirus and such.
If you do try reinstalling it again, do so directly into your C drive ( C:\\Game\\Dragon Age). This helps bypass a lot of the Windows authority gunk. Unless you have steam, otherwise this cannot be done as far as I know.
One last suggestion that might as well have been beaten to hell, run as administrator.
Your card should be able to hande DA:O. I've heard some people have problems running DA2 on it, but not Origins. I play on a GT 530 on highest settings with little to no lag.
EDIT: How long since your last defrag? Never know - might help.

Hey thanks for the reply will try. Ran a full driver sweep and reverted right back to older 275.33 drivers for NVidia, ruined my BF3 but has helped improve frame rate in the game alot compared to all the other drivers for the card I tried. Still far to skippy for my taste but clearly has helped in some form as now having frame buffer effects on does'nt destory the frame rate any longer. Will keep working on trying to solve.

Hey, -DX9 has bascially fixed it. Still a bit skippy (noticeable) but a million times better than before. At least its tolerable now. As for the GTX580, a bit confused as to why it is doing this, my last GFX card, the Radeon HD5870 had absolutly no problem what so ever with any of the games. Am sure its the Nvidia Drivers. Am missing my Radeon Terribly now and hoping that this GTX580 doesnt turn into a $700 Paper weight. Thanks for all the help and if any one has any other thoughts on how to stop this all together, I would welcome the suggestions.
