The first time through, I mean.

I ran Redcliffe, Circle, Sacred Ashes, Orzammar, Elves...

Reasoning:

-Redcliffe (Arl Aemon seemed the logical place to start from a story perspective).  Ran with Morrigan, Leliana and Dog for the village and then Morrigan, Leliana and Alistair in the castle, bringing in Alistair again for story reasons.  I was playing a tank character (also the reason I decided to save Shale for my second playthrough).

- Circle (OMG NEED HEALER actually I didn't, but I thought I did after some tough fights in Redcliffe and
sidequests).  Morrigan, Sten and Wynne.

- Sacred Ashes (seemed as good a time as any, after being ambushed at Lake Calenhad docks and getting the Brother Genitivi lead in Denerrim... going into Haven with Sten, having him FIGHT ME due to disagreement and then getting +approval from him for beating him down was the crowning moment for me and Sten getting on famously, I think he actually beat Leliana to 100 approval).  Leliana, Wynne and Sten.

- Orzammar - wanted to get Oghren before the end, really (after two Wynne+Sten missions in a row, I used a bunch of characters in stuff in Orzammar and decided after clearing Jarvia's hideout without Wynne that it was OK for me to go without a full healer, which made me improve my strategy a ton.  Oghren, Morrigan and Leliana.

- Elfland - last one left.  WAY easiest, too, maybe because of choices I made, but still.  WAYYYYYY easiest.  Zevran (to finally use him in a main quest area and because I thought there might be  elf story stuff), Wynne (for her sidequest) and Morrigan again (have to admit that I did start to over-rely on Morrigan a bit as she had by far the best crowd control and AOE spells).

Used Zevran, Morrigan and Sten for the hit on Arl Howe (At least partly because I wanted to be surrounded  by Team Amoral in case I had the choice to be nice to Howe, since I knew I was not planning on being nice....)

Leliana and Morrigan in Chantry robes for the escape :)

Leliana, Wynne and Dog for the Elf Alienage just as a break from Morrigan.

Then since I didn't give Morrigan her demon baby the first time around and she left AFTER I had her at 100 friendliness and geared her up for my main team, my final team for Team Kill The Archdemon was Zevran, Sten and Wynne.  I, um, was going to do everything possible to ensure Riordan took the bullet.  I realised the ending I had bought myself when a certain cutscene hit Image IPB

First play I did Redcliffe, Circle, Ashes, Orzammar, Elves. It seemed the most logical progression. Second, though...I did the Circle tower first so I had a good healer. Fighting the undead army was really difficult without a healer.

On my last Play-through:

1: Mage Origin

2: Brecilian Forest - unlock Arcane Warrior/get Juggernaught armor

3: Broken Mage Circle

4: Orzammar

5: Redcliff1

6: Dennerrim for side quests and character quests

7: Sacred Ashes Urn questline (currently)

I went and did both DLC areas first, right out of Lothering. Then I went to Denerim and did everything I could there before hitting any of the main plot locations. I also travelled around a lot just to get all the random encounters, and did as much as I could with the companions.

Finally I went to Redcliffe, after having done all side/optional content possible without advancing the main story.

Before finishing Redcliffe, I went and did the Circle Tower (because I had to in order to get the outcome I wanted in Redcliffe), then came back and finished up Redcliffe. Then I went around, again, and did any side/optional stuff that I could now that I'd completed a couple of main areas, including killing Flemeth.

Next was Urn of Sacred Ashes and the High Dragon. Followed by more side quests/companion stuff/random encounter hunting.

Then Brecilian Forest. Another optional content sweep.

I'd saved Orzammar and the Deep Roads for last, and went there next, and from there into the final story progression of the game.

First playthrough my order was Circle -> Redcliffe -> Orzammar -> Brecilian Forest. However I found that I didn't get to know Oghren very well because I'd picked him up too late and therefore I didn't get much character interaction with him.

So on my current playthough I'm going Circle -> Orzammar -> Redcliffe -> Brecilian Forest. So far it's going well.

DLC I always do first, along with all the quests in Denerim as it's great XP.

First time I did circle-redcliffe-denerim-elves-orzammar, which is probably the easiest order to do it in.

Second time I wanted to get the most out of Oghren and Shale, so I started with Orzammar directly after picking up Shale. It's very challenging on hard, as pretty much everything including the traps is overlevelled for you. But you have to do it to get Oghren...and it turns out to be quite doable, if you're careful. Jarvia is the hardest part, fighting her with a lvl 9 party and Morrigan barely only the first heal spell and a force field spell that lasts rather short...

Mage Origin->Circle->Denerim->Orzammar->Redcliff->Brecilian Forest

I kind of wanted to gather all companions as fast as possible.

The circle does, under all circumstances, seem like the best start - it is quite easy and gives some good stat bonuses.

1st playthrough:

- Brecilian Forest -> Denerim (side-quests) -> Warden's Keep -> Circle of Tower -> Orzammar -> Urn of Ashes -> Redcliffe -> Denerim

Had a hard time in Denerim, especially with the Blood-Mage Leader (aswell with the bandits as i hadn't any reasonable cc spells).

Mage origin, Orzammar (to gain Oghren), Circle (thought I could get blood magic there, but nooo), Redcliffe (meh, why not), Ashes (dragonslaying for goodness!), Brecilian Forest.

Denerim was where I went when I got bored or frustrated.

Not finished yet but after realising that I would get locked in the Circle Tower, I ended up doing Redcliff town (Sten, Morrigan, Alistair, no CC, it was tough but only Sten died) --> went back to the Mages Circle (Alistair, Shale, Wynne, worked a charm) --> back to Redcliff (Alistair, Wynne, Leliana; pretty easy, before sending Morrigan into the Fade) --> currently doing sidequests (I mix the party up on the road, in Denerim it was Alistair, Morrigan and DroolMachine; currently trying out Sten, Zeveran and Wynne/Morrigan, although I've decided my strongest party is probably Alistair, Shale and either Wynne or Morrigan).

Intend to do the Urn of Sacred Ashes next, followed by Orzammar and then Brecilian Forest to finish up, while polishing off sidequests in between. Having lots of fun, although probably only just starting to get the hang of the whole tactical combat stuff (never played BG or NWN), so I guess you could call me a noob.

mage tower, redcliffe, ashes, dalish, orzammar.

Current playthough mages tower first, then I'm going to hit Orzammar so I can have Oghren in my group longer. I just like to do the tower first for all the stat gains, which are a big help when you're still relatively low level. Trying to use a different group this time - Shale as tank, Morrigan instead of Wynne (although that may go away if she keeps whining), and when I get him, Zevran instead of Leiliana. Also trying to weave sten in a bit.

City Elf -> Mage Tower -> Redcliffe -> Ozrammar -> Forest -> Denerim (Side Quests, Boards, etc.) -> Urn

Only reason I left Urn to last was because the quest took my into Denarim, and I wanted to wait to go there, I thought it would spark off the ending portion of the game or something like that.   My Party pretty much the whole way was Me (Female City Elf Rogue Assassin/Duelist), Wynne, Leliana, Alistiar.

My Next playthrough is going to go Ozrammar first so I can get Ogrhen, then maybe Redcliffe -> Urn so I can get Drake/Dragon scales.  Problem is that Mage Tower is so good to do first, disregarding Healbot Wynne you still get all those Stat increases from the various Fade areas.

Me as a Male Human Noble Sword and Board Warrior (I want to be king), Dog, and I'm thinking Sten and Ogrhen, or Zevran if I'm craving some lock opening. Trying a full melee party.

First go through, Dwarf Noble... then straight to Orz, over to Denerim, Shale, pop to Circle, most of the Urn, Redcliffe Town, over to Elf Camp, back to finish Redcliffe Castle, and then finishing-finishing Denerim (and the endgame).

(Party was generally the Rogue PC, Alistair, and Ohgran, with Morrigan usually rounding it out but occasionally Wynne.)

I figured it made sense for her to go to Orz after she heard the rumor of the Dwarf King being dead from the barkeep in Loathering, and then she needed to run to Denerim to see Gorim. After that, though, it was just getting the last two party members as I'd been spoiled on their locations (...not that Shale or Wynne were paticularly hard to figure out). There was really no reason at all for the latter choices- I think I thought I wanted to get the ashes immediately so as soon as I saw the Arl I could give them to him in hopes of getting him to like me more, but in the end I just wandered all over the place while the Arl was laying poisoned and Conner was being possessed, so I don't really know what I was thinking.

First ranthrough I went to the forest first, to be frank I have no idea why I did, I think it was because the people in Lothering kept saying the woods to the north, which somehow implanted the idea that I should hit the woods first.

Then I went to the Mages Circle because I needed a healer.

Then to the Dwarfs for the Berzerker unlock, and then Redcliffe, and Denerim last.

This is for a game where I'm trying to be a hero. My evildoer game will probably be similar except for 'cleansing' the circle hehe.

- Go to Calenhad Docks, Denerim and Orzammar entrance to pick up faction side quests so I can work on them while traveling and doing main quests. If side quests can be completed immediately withing the giving zone I stay and do those before leaving.

- Circle because I like Wynne and because I want the Circle available for future quest references. I also prefer the place over everything else I've seen so far (pre-Landsmeet).

- Shale and Warden's Keep just to get DLC stuff out of the way, and to have storage chest.

- Redcliffe to get additional faction side quests going.

- Ashes to get Arl Eamon up and main quest moving along.

- Brecilian Forest because I like visiting Lanaya.

- Orzammar last because I don't like the place; feels like recycled dwarf city from other games even though it has it's own unique features. I love Dagna though.

- Wrap up remaining completable side quests then go to the Arl to start the endgame process.

Gotta slog my way through the Deep Roads tonight; looking forward to getting Orzammar out of the way. Feels like I fell into a pit I can't escape from. And people think the Circle+Fade situation is long-winded. I can breeze though that by comparison.

Post Lothering:

DLC - Shale (Reasoning: should be obvious, Shale is awesome, and has awesome things to say, you also can get a nice dagger and one of the best rings in the game from this area. Also a chance at an awesome +2 all heavy helm that looks cool if you kill the demon)

DLC - Keep (Reasoning: Party Chest, Free talents, money, two cool swords, iffy-massive armor)

Broken Circle (reasoning: For skill point boost, and to fit with talents, I think this is best excuse for doing the Circle first, it's also needed with the Redcliffe quest if you don't want to kill Isolde, also good to get Wynne early on if you don't have a respec mod for Morrigan, it takes quite awhile to make her healing abilities comparable to Wynne in vanilla, also a nice dagger in a locked chest)

Redcliffe (Reasoning: quicker access to Sten's two-handed sword, early cash, maybe a helmet, relatively easy going for good xp gain +Blood mage spec if wanted)

Denerim (As many side quests as possible, 2 companion quests)

Urn of Ashes (Kill a Dragon, get Drake Scales and a Dragon scale for good armor from Wade early on + Reaver spec if wanted)

After this point I don't think it matters as much, if you want the dwarf companion quickly, some decent cash and xp, plus some neat stories go to Orzammar, it's one of the longer chains. Or go to the Forest which may be the shortest chain, but the rewards are not as good.

In terms of getting geared up as quickly as possible I think this is one of the better ways to do it unless you are just hoping all over the place, it also saves you from wasting attribute points on things you don't need as badly, depending on your class. By the time you are done with Denerim on this path, you should have a decent skill set, a good store of gold, and your stats where you need them to be for equipment, abilities, etc.

First play through went

Mages > Dailish > Denirim > Red cliff > golem > Urn > dwarves

Second play through went

Mages (love getting the bonus stats) > Golem > red cliff > dwarves > Denirim > Dalish > Urn

Current one thinking...

Mages > Golem > red cliff > Denirim > Dalish > Urn > Dwarves >

first time: redcliff (difficlut in some parts), mage tower, Denerim, Dalish camp, Ozrimar

current game: Ozrimar (after picking up Shale/Stone Prisoner). I'm still in Ozrimar. But I plan on doing mage tower next then Redcliff. Then probably Denerim and Dalish elves.

Mages always first, healer + free stat points = win. DLC content ( shale+ Starfang), then Redcliffe, Dwarfs, elves, urn . Although after DLC i go to Denerim for quests in market area and ~ lvl 12-14 I start to stroll around Denerim map for all the special encounters.

1) DLC - I love Shale, and I want to get poor Levi a home so he stops standing at the edge of my camp

2) Circle - get Wynne, get the stats...

3) Redcliffe - early enough that it's still a challenge, but not so early it gets frustrating

4) Denerim - sidequests, sell and buy stuff, change of pace, etc

5) Urn - Dragon time!

5) Orzammar - I'll probably do this one earlier next playthrough, so I can get Ohgren for more of the game

6) Forest - since it is by far the shortest and easiest, I think it's a good one to do last...by this time, the game starts to feel like a grind, so it's nice to breeze through here.

Anyway, that's worked best for me.

First thing. Gear Leli with armor provided by the Dalish. Get the staff for Morrigan. Stop there. Come back later. Do all possible side quests. Do Circle, RC and Urn. Finish Dalish. Get Juggernaut **** for Oghren so he doesn't suck. Buy up all the elfroots to get lvl 25. Hit up Orz. Because of the infinite elf root provided by the Dalish there's no reason not to do them first.
