I was very curious with all the talk of specializations I'm seeing, and the debate if our NPC companions will be allowed to get a 2nd one or not. Do you think it would be realistic to turn Alistair into a decent-good damage dealer with a two hander? I want my PC to be the main tank is why I ask, and Alistair is just to much of an interesting characted to pass up.
Alistair as a Damage Dealer?

Allistair will already have some weapon and shield talents when you get him. You could but that's not the "best" choice, purely from a powergaming perspective.
Other than that, sure why not ?

My PC is going to be a sword and board\\tanker type and I plan on having Alistair in my group filling the same role. Can't go wrong with two tanks. Especially since the sword and shield styles can actually crank out decent damage.

lols whats with your double threads, anyways
i'm not sure about this but when you get him i think his first specialisation is already templar? So i doubt he will make a good dps-er, there probably be better ones. As for me i will probably use him as a tank templar/champion..and prolly a duelist rogue(Zevhran/that bard girl?) and mage(morri) for dps

Alistair starts as a Templar, with some sword and shield talents. You're welcome to start him down the Two-hander path, and give him a more damage oriented second specialization.

Templars aren't tanks in any way. They kill mages, and you kill mages better with a 2h weapon.
People should get those weapon-restrictments from specializations out of their head, it doesn't fit (though I admit I also had those images).

Sorry about the double threads, when I first clicked submit I recived an error, and even checked to make sure it didn't go through. Went back and hit submit again and what do you know, two threads haha. But anyways, that was my concern, I know he's a templar, but in a way that makes him a better DPS'er as he'll be a lot better at killing mages then I will be. However, depending on how many points he has invested in S/S I'll make the decision on switching him to two handers or not.

You could always use the console to "ignore" his sword and board talents when you get him. Say he has two sword and shield talents, just console yourself in 2 talent points and put them where you want.

You meet Alistair during the Joining, so you should be able to make him a follower early enough that he doesn't have too many point invested in sword and shield.
