Dwarves and Elves aren't really inspired from a specific Earth culture I think (though the Elves show some traits of Natives Americans and Dwarves have a caste system reminiscent from India, and do NOT LOOK LIKE Americans in any way).
Antiva is more specifically "Venice" I would say.

Qunari stroke me as being medieval Arabian.
Tevinter is definitely the Roman Empire before the First Blight, and the Byzantine after (though Orlais got a bit of byzantine politics also). There is even the Schism with the Two Chantries :P

Dwarves are Scottish.

Dwarves are always Scottish.

The Qunari could be Chinese/Japanese - Intense honour culture.

Elves are a whiny, nimble, point eared people who excel at poverty.

BioWare actually went quite far out of their way to avert the Dwarves are Scottish theme. In fact, they don't really seem to be a stand in for any human culture. If anything I'd say they resemble Germany just after WWII. For a while they were a powerful, resourceful, industrious nation (post-Bismarck/unification) that gave anyone pause, then something pretty nasty came along and now they're in shambles.

I agree that the Daelish have some pretty striking similarities with the Native American nations just in that they get used, exploited, and cast aside over and over. The Qunari seem to me more like the Mongolian Empire at its height, but that's just me.

Tevinter... pretty much seems like a generic empire to me, probably because we don't know much about it. Sure they had a (big) part in Andraste's story, but from the little we know about them that's about where the similarities stop aside from the inevitable they got powerful then decadent then fell that pretty much everything goes through given time. But again, that's just me.

BTW you guys do know that Chevalier is the french word for Knight right?

But there seems to be quite a difference between Orlais Chevalier and a Felderen Knight. The Felderen Knight don't have the Noble rank and from what i've seen work for the noble they are the elite much like the Chevalier but the Chevalier seems to do as they wish of the low born.

Maj. as far as I've seen she's not a noble so a Chevalier wouldn't bother to serve a Lowborn even if they are rich.... They would consider that beneath their rank.

Maybe Qunari = Mongols?

Didn't the Qunari invade Thedas from the north, bringing a new, philosophical religion and comparatively highly developed technology with them? Sounds like a bit like the Mongol hordes who adapted Chinese thought and technology.

Ferelden - British.

Help me out here!

Ferelden - English. I heard nor saw Scotsmen or Welshmen In Fereldan. :P

I'd personally love to fight Chevaliers, they seem to enjoy a status of badass equal to the Grey Wardens, so vthe two fighting? More epic than Godzilla fighting Thor in a volcano.

The Knights of Ferelden resemble the Knights of the Medieval period in that they seem to be elite warriors, sworn to a higher ranking noble. They, in themselves however, do not appear to be landowners.

The Chevaliers sound to me more like Late Medieval French Gendarmes (far too many capital letters there) than a traditional Knight.

Let's not get sidetracked by irrelevant nationlities. My hatred of the Chevaliers is pure and not based on their scuzzy french accents.

Maybe Dragon Age 2 takes place in Orlais?
Then you can slay as many Chevaliers as you like - or even be one :-)

That would be awesome!  But I worry about how people to react about a game in Antiva or Orlais...having everybody talk with a French of Spanish accent would be awesome for me but it might drive off alot of people.  I mean it is not really France or Spain they just use those accents to indicate Orlais or Antiva which is pretty awesome but if somebody finds Spaniards really annoying I could see it being hard for them to detach the accent from the RL country.

Sorry, I could not resist the history lesson. Why the Chevalier hatred? I mean, all we really know about them is they're French sounding and heavy Cavalry (I think).

Ferelden is clearly based on Anglo-Saxon England both in its political structure and culture. I mean they even got invaded by the Normans (Orlesians).

You should.  The nobility of Orlais are not to be trusted.

More specifically, the knights of Ferelden resemble specifically English knights, professionnal men-at-arms. The typical "medieval knights" in nearly all other countries was a noble itself, more akin the "Chevalier".

Interesting points by many. Dwarves culture isn't really directly applicable to much, but their accents are distinctly American so that's what I went with. No scottish in Thedas, I'm afraid.

And yes Orlais is definetly France. Kudos to the one who said Antiva was Venetian - sounds good to me.

I keep thinking that Antivan accents sound more Spanish then Italian, but I do think the country is supposed to be based off of Italy (a friend joked that it could be Southern Italy under the Spanish Crown, but I don't take that seriously).

If the way things are named are any clue, the Anderfels are where you're going to find your German's

I love the way they pronounce it.

I do think Antiva is spanish, old chap! Not enough meatballs around for Zevran. Elves are American (sure as hell), and Qunari... Well, they seem like Spartans or something similar. Probably made up entirely.

except in Dragon Age...or do you play with your sound off everytime a dwarf speaks in this game?  NONE of them have any kind of scottish accent or likeness...

Not really no. Except for being a persecuted minority, I don't see any or very little similarity, religion / culture / history wise.

The only two times we learn anything about them is from a girl in the marketplace of Denerim and the Summer Sword codex entry. Until I hear something that does not make them seem like the worst human beings alive I am going to assume they all should be put to the sword.
