Now for my favorite: While I did like Persona 3 I just prefer Persona 4 a lot more. It's not the fact that it's more streamlined than P3 but rather I always had an affinity for gameplay and storylines that deal with investigations. Another favorite of mine is Xenosaga Episode I. Xenosaga Episode II wasn't that terrible but it could have been a lot better. And I certainly didn't care for the fact that it essentially focused only on MOMO and Jr. while everyone else took a back seat. Episode III was better but overall, Episode I was really good.

I'm going to right away state my more disliked: Star Ocean The Last Hope. Good god. The characters are just TERRIBLE and annoying. They encompas every stereotypical anime trope EVER. Plus the overall story and plot about the "Seeds of Hope" is just a rip off of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. If anything, I did like the combat.... but that was it. A close second to my most disliked would be Final Fantasy XII. Turn off the gambits and the combat is alright. The story (at first) seemed to be interesting but eventually you can tell where it all falls apart to the point that you will start asking "Wait, what's going on? Why are we here again? What are we trying to accomplish? What happened to this person?"

Yes another Xenosaga fan
I share your sentiments with that, episode I was extremely well done. The episode II moved at much too slow of a rate...I'm going to assume it was because they intended to make more games and much more spread out, and episode III I liked a lot for what it was, it was overall a summary, and tied back in to the first game a lot, the second game didn't add a lot to the overall story in my opinion, while the first did a great job storytelling and introducing everyone, the third put a lot of information out there, and progressed at an insane rate, was well done but didn't have the same sort of depth of the first. Also the first definitely had the most exploratory content....well unless you include ep2's menial tasks to see a swimsuit competition lol....
But yes the 2nd one went on a huge tangent with Momo/Jr/Sakura/Albedo.

The one I "hate"? Lost Oddyysey. It was just really, really boring. The whole game felt like a drag and the characters didn' seem very engaging either. The only JRPG I've played that I didn't complete, lety me put it that way.

My fave is a no-brainer. Skies of Arcadia Legends. The graphics are really dated, being a Dreamcast port for Gamecube, but the characters, world and gamelplay is timeless. It uses a turn based battle system which would rile some I'm sure but you don't really notice it too much when you play, and the airship battles are also ace, if a little slow. Made by the same team that did Valkyria Chronicles. They were called Overworks back then.

I liked Skies of Arcadia to but those random encounters are waaay to close for comfort. Finish one battle and 4 seconds later you're in a new one, especially when you're out flying. I can't play that game anymore because of that, my tolerance for random encounters is all spent...

Depends, did you have the DC original or the GC port? On the port random battles aren't as frequent.

I have it on the GC port. I've heard that the original was worse but I can't imagine how they could squeeze in more encounters, I felt like I was fighting constantly until the point in the game where you can fly above or below the cloudbelts...boy was that a relief!

Not too sure on this but I think if you dip as far as you can before hitttng Lower Sky before getting the Yafutoma engine you can sort of trick the game into thinking you're in Lower Sky, but only halfway as you'll still get into battles but at a much reduced rate. I can't completely confirm this though.
Thanks, I'll try that if I get the urge to play it again.

When it comes to FF games, I share your views exactly. FFX has an amazing game, one of those you love it or you hate it kind of games, I'm the former. And I think everyone knows my views on FFXIII on this forum.

LOL. His review of FFVIII was epic. I couldn't have possibly said it better than he did... that game was horrible in just about every way imaginable. It boggles the mind how people can defend that game as being anything other than complete garbage.

I'd have to say Chrono Trigger is probably the overall greatest JRPG I've ever played. FFVI, FFVII, and Chrono Cross all come close... but CT is forever the top dog IMHO.Lotion Soronnar wrote...

I watch Spoony and Nostalgia Critic religiously. Funniest reviewers I know. And often very accurate.
When it comes to game, Angry Joe.
And yeah..FF...dear lord the horrible, horrible plots and writing. It's beyond my comprehension how anyone can like it.
But then gain, there are people with self-hurting fetishes...

Anyway, most of the "horrible plots and writing" are actually just the result of ******-poor translating and localization... FFII, FFIII, and FFV never even made it Stateside until much later, and the translations for FFIV and FFVII were freakin' TERRIBLE.
Butchered scripts were pretty much the norm back in the glory days though... not just in video games, but pretty much everything else that came from Japan as well. So it is what it is.
And besides, we'd probably never have gotten this gem if things had been different:
Glorious.

But i can say i really liked Saga Frontier 2. It looked great, i liked the characters, the story was interesting. Can't really remember the gameplay, but i guess it was accessable.
The other one was Shining Force II. Loved the scope of the game, i think it was might first "epic adventure". But it became to frustrating for me later on (something about a chessboard that i was never able to survive).

But in my opinion the FF series on the whole has went downhill ever since they ditched the world map exploration with an airship, FFXII being the exception in my case (one of my favorite in the franchise, despite what most of the FF fandom say about it).
