Good Analysis OP, i do like the 3act arc for romances in literature, movies and games, it gets our emotions involved as a true RL relationship would although not to the extent a real relationship does obviously. My "main" shep's never romanced any of the 3 choices in ME1 cause the 2 i did want weren't allowed when ME1 came out because i didnt feel they fit how i was RPing those Sheps, that didn't stop me from making a Shepard that i felt worked with Ash, Kaidan and Liara, because i recognized the 3act arc and wanted to follow it to the conclusion. The "hidden feelings" relationships of tali and garrus, and the 3act arc of Ash, Kaidan and Liara all are interesting to me which is why i have sheps specifically for them and look forward to ME3 and their conclusions.
Again to you OP i say, Outstanding work!

Appreciate your quick PMs, the article is fantastic. I'm one of the few who seemed to remain loyal with the original love interest, and eagerly wait to see how it all unfolds in Mass Effect 3. Once again, really great job and enjoyed your insights. Makes me hopeful for the conclusion

I think that was a very thoughtful post, and while I agree with you that that's where the writers are going with the VS arc, I do think that the writing for the Horizon situation was somewhat sloppy. I don't say that because we aren't allowed to resolve the problems; I say it because it seemed that both Shep and the VS are somewhat out of character at that point.
And I think part of the problem here isn't that fans want easy romance. I like the general formula of romance that you outlined, and I don't want things to be easy. The issue is simply that we're looking at a story that has played out for fans over literal years. It's a long time for us to wait and be in doubt over this storyline. As someone who has all my available saves loyal to my ME1 LI, it's been a long, dark two years real time of waiting for some hope that things can be resolved. That's worse than waiting for the new season of your favorite show to return from the cliffhanger.
