Here's what actually matters: who was given command of the Normandy, because that's an all-Alliance crew.

Also, can we just stipulate that everyone is just that (make-believe) badass and won't take any lip or whatever? All this e-posturing is getting tiresome.   And for now, we'll just ignore the fact that you'll do what the devs allow you to and no more.

Last time I checked, it's still Shepard's ship.

Technically didn't Cerberus steal the blueprints from the alliance, Shep stole the physical ship from them...and then the Alliance took the ship and gave it a makeover?

Whatever. I'm stealing the damn ship back. I'll just tell the VS to GTFO if it's an option so this won't be an issue.

What rank is Ashley? I would have gotten rid of them both if I could, but at least Ashley made me actively dislike her. Didn't even notice Kaidan.

Also, is there any word on whether all squad members are mandatory or not? As in you have to recruit them.

Speaking of which, more people need to call Shepard "Captain". Sounds a lot better than "Commander", IMO.

I think Ash is the same rank as Shep (unless Shep's promoted in which she'll be lower or demoted in which she'll be higher).

Kaidan's a higher rank then Shep (unless Shep gets promoted).

I think the VS and Vega are known mandatory squaddies (well them and Liara).

It looks like the only squad members you're forced to have throughout the game are Vega, Liara, and one of the two secret squadmates.

That's not her rank.  Which is Lt. Cmdr, BTW.

Oh no, I sure hope Kaiden doesn't try to lay down the law on me... whips and chains could be involved.

What I don't get is how a naval officer (Kaidan) gets a ground-force army rank (Major. Naval equivalent would be Captain).

Also, technically, Shepard 'left the Alliance' when she died in the beginning of ME2. People kept calling her 'commander', I assume, because that's what they're used to. Technically, she's the captain of a civilian(/paramilitary) ship.
She'll only get reinstated during the beginning of ME3, and I don't believe the rank she'll get is known yet.

That said, though, Spectres 'only answer to the council', meaning their ranks in whatever militaries they still may be would be irrelevant. Kaidan, Ashley and Shepard would all be equals regardless. And since Shep's the most experienced both in terms of leadership and fighting the Reapers, it'd only be natural they'd relinquish command to her.

The VS is a mandatory recruitment though. You can't leave Earth without them.

I suppose, but you can get rid of them in short order.

Oh, lol, I just noticed that. That misspelling's new, too; it's not the usual "Kaiden".

Ppl are getting mixed up . . . .Think of a spectre and ranking as this:
Using, James Bond is a commander in the british navy, his rank.
His m6 stats is 007
Using Shep is a XO/Lt.commander in the Alliance military ,his rank.
His council stats is spectre

I don't think Shep ever got promoted past Lieutenant Commander, so technically even Ashley can refuse to follow his/her orders.

She can't give any to Shepard either.

Well... (spoilers follow): It looks like they get injured on Mars and they have to recuperate on the Citadel, during which time they aren't on the squad. And you aren't forced to take them back when they do become available again.

She can if she was placed in command of the Normandy and she outranks Shep.  That's how rank works.

Kaidan, to my knowledge, is actually an Alliance Marine, as he was in command of the Marine detatchment on the Normandy.  So the rank of Major would be correct.

She doesn't though. Both of them are Lt. Commander.

I'd like to see Kaidan tell my Shepard what to do. He will regret ever doing that...

Joking aside though, Shepard is the tried and true leader. They'll follow her. "She's a hero, a bloody icon," as Miranda once said. Shep has always been the leader, and they will follow for that reason. But the argument could be made that they are just working together, and that there is no "real" leader per se, despite Shepard being the uniting figure for the team.

Also, as said above, Shepard being in control of the Normandy technically does give him/her more authority than Kaidan or Ashley.
