Nobody in Ferelden knows how to do it until near the end of the game, and given the likelihood that people you conscript will just die right off the bat it should probably not be used on too many prominent folks that aren't slated for death in the first place. "Well, we tried to conscript Bann Teagan, Arl Eamon, Anora, an entire Daelish tribe, Cairdan, and Lord Harrowmont… but they all died. Shucks."

And honestly, I blame the first enchanter. Who keeps blood magic books in the open library then punishes people for trying to learn it? Jowan was just competitive. He wanted to be the best mage possible. He didn't use blood magic to hurt anyone. He just wanted to run away with Lily and use his talents to protect them. The only real fault I could find with him was that he'll lie to his best friend (you). Everything else is circumstantial. He didn't make a deal with a demon to learn blood magic. He learned it in a book. The psychotic position everyone takes on blood magic is as prejudiced as the Templar's themselves. As long as you're "participants" are willing, there's nothing "evil" about blood magic. I mean honestly. I wish I could get in a debate with Allistair and Wynne and slap them and say, "blood magic doesn't enslave people, evil mages enslave people. Oh, and demons. Get over yourselves you self righteous sycophants."

If I'm to have a male apostate mage for an NPC companion, I vote for Anierin. Yummy adorable elven healer > whiny blood mage.

Heh, there was another Jowan thread about and Daivd G (lead writer) reveald that Jowan was planned to be a full party member at one time but he got bumped down a few pegs. I can't seem to find the thread much less what David had to say.
Oh God why did he have to be cut?! Should have cut the drunk Dwarf. Or the dog. Well OK not the dog. But just damn. The guy would definitely have been awesome.

Oh, god, I'm glad he was cut. My mage was so furious at him for lying to her and to Lily. I wanted to gut the little bastard right then and there in the dungeon, but my mage packed him off to the Circle's tender mercies in the end. There are plenty of interesting, complex characters in DA that are less cowardly and idiotic than Jowan.

So not running away and choosing to face his fate == cowardly? Huh.

Where do you find that out? I always assumed that it was in fact some sort of deal with a demon.nuculerman wrote...

I didn't like him much at all. In fact, none of the companions you have during the non-dwarf origin stories were very interesting or likeable at all, to me.
The dwarves were a big exception to this, though, as both Leske and Gorim were AWESOME.
Agreed. I really wanted Gorim back in my party. If it were up to me, I'd have created an all-dwarf party of asskickery.

That's not why he did it. Don't understand where you're pulling these baseless assumptions from.

Double Agree. Having just beat the Noble option, I want him back.
To kill fools who talk back to their noble, of course.

Talk back? No, talk to me without being addressed by me. There will be many a dead peasant.

I suppose he gets better during Redcliffe. Hours alone and starving in the Arl's dungeon while zombies are eating the castle and village will give you a little perspective on how you'd like to die. No, I'm talking about the origin story. He lies through his teeth to your PC and Lily about his use of blood magic because he's an irresponsible and cowardly twit, then proceeds to flee and leave both of you to your fate after killing a whole bunch of templars. Nice guy. <_<
I'm not saying Jowan is an awful person. He's an idiot with powers too dangerous for him to handle, in the wrong place at the wrong time. He's certainly not as implicated in his actions as, say, someone like Teryn Loghain or Arl Howe, but at the same time, there need to be consequences for what he's done.

I mean you can have a team of Champions/Berserkers/any of the warrior trees. So why not.
Really would have been interesting to see what they would have done story wise if you recruited Wynne and Jowan.
Or make Avernus recruitable.
On second though Avernus would be way more awesome. Then again that would break the endgame since he is a Grey Warden.
