On my very first playthrough without knowing anything. I was able to manage to spare his life at the landsmeet and recruit him.

This time around I wanted to do the same thing. But even with me opposing it Allistair ends up killing him!. So I read that its because I forgot to arrange the marriage this time around. So I load and old save and waste a half hour setting it up and redoing things so they are to be married. Yet this time around Allistair STILL ends up killing Loghain? WTF how do you make it so he does the joining?

I have read how I respond to him durng the quest about his sister affects this? If thats the case im totally screwed...thats way too far back for me to go again.

Are you sending a hardened Alistair to duel Loghain? He will always execute the old bastard after defeating him.

Avoid that problem by dueling Loghain yourself.

Im not even %100 sure what hardened means?

But no, I duel Loghain by myself and Allistair still kills him.

To 'harden' Alistair, after his personal quest, you have to choose the dialogue option that everyone is out for themselves. Alistair will think about what you say, and later, when you click on him (in camp, I think but I could be wrong) you can have a conversation about what you said earlier. Just reinforce the point that he needs to stick up for himself more, and you'll have successfully 'hardened' him.

At the Landsmeet, you definitely do not want him dueling Loghain. He'll kill Loghain every time, and if you want him to be king alongside Anora, she won't marry him after he kills her father.

What is your approval with Alistair at the time of the Landsmeet? It is possible that the approval affects whether or not he kills him.

No, his approval makes no difference regarding his actions towards Loghain. If Alistair duels Loghain, he kills him. If the warden or any other companion aside from Alistair duels Loghain, the warden can choose to spare him, kill him, or have Alistair kill him.

Ah, thank you for clearing that up ejoslin. I wasn't completely sure if it would be a factor. ^_^
