Been wondering about this for a while. I purchased the Ultimate Edition which contains all the DLC content, including Feastday Gifts / Feastday Pranks.
It strikes me that the gifts (Companion-specific gifts that give +30 approval, and an unlimited amount of sugar cake and thoughtful gifts which give +10 approval each) maybe trivialise the entire process of gaining approval with your companions. It means that I can essentially make decisions within the game without ever having to worry about disapproval. All I need to do is hand over a cake to the disapproving companion and all is forgiven - they love me again!
During my last playthrough I attempted to go through the entire game without using the DLC gifts - and I have to say it was a far more immersive and engaging experience. (I admit I 'cheated' once, giving a Thoughtful Gift to Morrigan after I'd cheesed her off by lying to the demonic cat in honnleath).
What about the Pranks? I've yet to come up with any kind of legitimate use for them, beside saving a game, and deliberately putting a companion into Crisis just to see what happens... then feeling really bad about it, and reloading.... Does anyone here regularly use the Feastday Pranks as part of their normal gameplay?
Do you use Feastday Gifts / Pranks?

I saved the game and played around with them once, reloaded. Not used them since.

The gifts do seem to make it a little too easy to gain approval. But it is perhaps also true that the items that come with the other dlc also reduce the difficulty level of the game. Far better selection of armor and weapons with the dlc, a place to store items, etc. Changes the way the game needs to be played.
Maybe the supply of sugar cakes and thoughful gifts should have been restricted a little more. As it stands one can keep a few of either in inventory and basically disregard one's companions' feelings. Maybe it makes it too easy to buy back approval -- trivialises the process, as the OP says.
The pranks I used once just to see what they were about, and then never again afterward. But they do broaden the game a bit, maybe appealing more to some players than others. It is not like they are integral to advancing the story...just a bit of additional content.

Warden: Leliana, I'm gonna defile ze ashes
Leliana: NOOOOOOOO I WON"T LET YOU DO IT!
Warden: Here, have some cake.
Leliana: I LUV CAKE! Go ahead and defile them!
Ok......
Sidenote: Yes I know she only accepts defiling the ashes if you've hardened her and chosen the right responces, just that using cake to remove the disapproval was an amusing thought.

The Pranks are helpful sometimes in dealing with unintended Approval bugs. (Such as the infamous bug with Leliana's romance not being able to proceed because you accidentally got her Approval too high too fast and thus missed out on asking her a crucial question about Bards.) You can thus use them to lower their Approval to a point where you can get the question again.
Plus, some of the Pranks are actually helpful! Since the companion-specific pranks are all free, Dog's Cone, for instance, can be equipped on him, removed immediately, and then sold back to Bodahn for a minor profit. (If you sell the Cone to other vendors, you could actually repeat this over and over since the Pranks automatically reappear in Bodahn's inventory if you already bought them.)

I messed around with the gifts/pranks in one file, but the massive approval gain seemed kinda, cheap I suppose. Like I didn't really earn it. I reloaded the previous save and haven't used them since. It's fun to see the effects of each, but from a practical and immersive standpoint, I avoid them.
