I feel a bit cheap trying multiple times for a to pass a "persuade" check, and getting it on the 2nd or 3rd attempt. What do you guys think?

Hmmm I'd never really tried after a first failed attempt. Just moved on and figured out a different way to do it, but honestly if that's the way you want to play then why not? I'd say--if it breaks your immersion or if you've already played it through more than once--than try not and mix it up.

For a single-player game, it doesn't really matter whether anyone else considers it cheating, does it? however you want to play the game, that's how you should play the game. Having fun with the game is the most important thing, in my opinion.
