Do you equip all your party members with top-notch items?

I was wondering, do you equip all your party members with the very best items you can find that fits them? Or do you stick on equipping only the companions you're using the most and leave the others in the dust? I'm asking this because... well, perhaps out of reflex I always end up equipping all my companions with the best I can either find or buy, it's usually stuff I buy however... it gets very expensive in the end, obviously, I guess it's a form of "challenge". I think I'll stick to three companions for my next play-through and see if there's any substantial differences in the amount of money I can save by focusing instead of globalizing.

I usually just strip whoever I'm not using down to undies and sell their stuff for a few extra silver. This came back to bite me in the ass during the final battle of course, luckily I had enough random gear in my bags to make it through it.

My unused characters make do with hand-me-downs.

I do hand me downs, but my hand me downs tend to be awesome anyways.
I also like to see them stand around in spiffy armor.

I tend to pick three party members and use them throughout the game. Those three get the decent gear and I sell the rest.

Usually I just equip the ones I tool around with, but then there aren't many other NPCs in the camp anymore. Due to roleplaying, I've killed Wynne, sent Zevran packing, driven Alistair away, haven't looked for Shale, and left Sten to die like the murdering treacherous ******* my character assumed he was.
Alistair leaving hurt, though. Guy took the Juggernaut armor with him.

I've even considered buying one of the 100+ sovereign items for them... Ain't got what to do with all that gold anyhow

I give them normal stuff and use the extra gold to get exp.

They get the next best gear, yes.
I learned long ago that these characters may be forced on you with little or no warning. So if I can spare it without buying, they get equipment.

I stick with whatever characters I chose to play as at the start, so I don't need to equip any of the other camp members. Cycling around too much ruins replay value for me.

everyone gets the best equipment I can find. I don't buy anything for anyone except myself and my DPS melee (usually zevron or Ohgren). Finding good tanking gear is pretty easy. But giving Zevran the best daggers money can buy helps A LOT.

I definitely equip all of my characters with the very best I can find for them. Still trying to get enough gold to buy a couple more items on some merchants to complete them though.

Well if you have the DLCs, ya get two sets of massive armor, if ya do the Urn quest, you get a few mediocre sets of armor, think drakescale is light period, dragonscale can be medium to massive so don't pick massive, make it medium and give it to yer rogue/rogues.
Also, lots of other sets of heavy+ armor to be found through quests. Too bad the better robes are just hangin out in stores. I'd say hook up your characters you'll be playing with most with the best as a general rule, though you'll need to swap it out on occasion as the storyline forces you to take some members in stead of your preferred folks.
If you are having money troubles, have a rogue around to steal from any npc/enemy that you can manage to, it'll add up in the long run. I use my gold to snag the spiffy accessories that catch my eye.

I usually deck my PC 100+ sovereign items, I just got the sweet dagger from the Orz vender for my rogue. If you have a rogue make sure to pick pocket everything. Yum

No... mostly because the game doesn't have enough "top notch" items to give to them. I barely have enough to outfit my party. I'm already abusing the fact the dwarf in camp resets at somepoint and I was able to pick up 2x spellwards and 2x veshialle from him otherwise I'd be much worse off.

Personally, I strip all my unused characters into the cheapest stuffs I can find. I'd sell their 5 gold robes and equip them with some commoner cloth. Oh, they certainly don't get to carry any weapons at all either.
I learnt my lesson the hard way, but luckily Dog and Shale are not item-dependent.

There is enough top notch stuff out there.
I try to give the unused characters some armour and weapons, usually stuff my running party is using until I find something better. Later in the game this is a bit annoying since you have to take the unused guys to level up first before they can equip the better gear.
There are several times when leveled and equipped companions come in useful. It's not a requirement though, they'll survive naked, it's just more convenient if they have gear.

I usually give characters the best of the leftovers when I find them. I NEVER sell or throw away unique gear. So in my game Sten ended up wearing the armor of the legion of the dead. The warrior I used throughout was Alistair (Sten just guarded the camp). I was reluctant to give Zevren anything (my relationship with him was too low for most of the game.

I always go for the stat-boosters, even if they protect less or do less damage.

Generally that is decided upon what role they are going to fill, what gear is avaliable for them to equip, and what class i am playing. For the most part though the items the others use has been pretty consistent considering this is my 4th run through now.
Allister if tanking will use the Wardens Commander plate until big enough to equip the Wade's massive dragon scale armor.
Sten ALWAYS uses the dragon armor (the pre order bonus set) as he is generally the off tank when i use one, and it looks better on him than any other character.
Leliana uses Wade's superior drake scale with the dex bonus and fire resist, as she is my go to rogue, and uses a bow.
Zeveran gets the other Wade's Drake scale with just the fire resist as i do not use him that often, and would rather have it in use than stored at wardens keep.
Oghren i usually equip in the Juggernaut armor again rather than store it i will put it into circulation.
If i play a warrior and intend to tank i will follow the Allister plan, if i intend to be an off tank then i will stay with the wardens commander armor.
As for the mage classes Wynne, Morrigan or as the last to play throughs i was a mage (heal bot)/mage (DPS backup heal) i use what i like the look of more so than what has better stats.
As a former WoW player i used to be all about function over form, i even used to make jokes about how my character would look sometimes as i jockied different armor around looking for the best bonuses. I would not care how it looked, i would wear "The lawn and leaf bag of butt kicking" if the numbers were there but as this game is single player, i am competing against no one but myself, i have relaxed that somewhat. Since all my PCs are female so far i usually prefer the look of the Witches robes (bought in the wonders of thedas), and the lesser tevinter robes (dropped off the tevinter mages in the alienage) regardless of the stats being not as good as some other items. I even go so far as to put Wynne or Morrigan into the other set of robes i am not wearing, so i get my mage in the lesser tevinter and Wynne or Morrigan in the witches robes. Yes it is pretty hot.

I'll usually buy the super-expensive, best-of gear for my PC.
There's plenty of massive armor sets that are good and look awesome, so by the end all my warriors are decked. There's always too many high strength 1-handers, though. (Would it have killed bioware to make EITHER Sten or Oghren dual-wield? So I don't have to give an amazing weapon like Keening Blade to a tank of all things? Sigh...) You end up with one very good Rogue Suit (Superior Drakescale), which is good enough for my needs (and there's enough other rogue quested items, and Shadow of the Empire is cheap enough should I want a second, pretty-good rogue suit.)
Mages get kinda screwed. Morrigan gets her quested robes, Wynne gets Tevinter Mage Robes. I wish there were more non-blood mage high-end robes in the game. I guess I'm staring at Tevinter Mage Robes from level 7 to 20.
Really, the main cost seems to be whether you want to spend to upgrade gear in the early-mid game, by the end game you'll have good gear for everyone.

Everyone seems intent on piling decent loot on me towards the end of the game, so I'll save some for the characters back at camp. It's nothing I spend time on though, I would never buy anything for them. I prefer keeping three characters in my party all the time, and I only really focus on them. That sucked my first playthrough when both Alistair and Morrigan left me, but hey. you make choices and live with the consequences.

i use best gear on me. second best on party members, and some good tank stuff is given to allistair in camp since shale is a tank without lots of gear
1: u need party members at forced moments during the game
2: i love to get in my camp and see:
sten in blood dragon armor
allistair in heaviest dragonbone armor
wynne in juggernaut set
oghren: full legion of dead armor
leliana walk around as a amazone bow mistress
zevran... well .. i never look at him much but he is waring second hand down rogue gear ( current pc char is rogue
)
morrigan wearing best cold damage gear.
and my dog with the most dangerous painting on its back.. while shale radiates all kinds of colors
love to have good lookin gear around instead of vendor stuff
even had wynne in ancient elven armor for a while..
