OC multiplayer trouble and question

I tried a private multiplayer session with a friend for the first time, and ran into problems.  The manual had said that up to 3 people can play in the OC at the same time, so I thought that would be fine.  She set up the server through the normal game client as described in the NWN2 Multiplayer Hosting and Connection Guide, choosing "Load game" to use a previously saved game as it says in the guide.

So the first problem is that it seems we can't use her existing OC saves, which she had been playing single player already.  Is that right?  It has to be started as multiplayer from the beginning?  I can't find an answer for that either in the manual or the guides.  If this is the case, is there any way to convert a single player saved game to a multiplayer one?

The other problem is that we get the "server timed out" error mentioning a possible firewall, both when I tried hosting it and when she did.  I found suggestions to solve that in this other thread, though, so mainly I want to know about the first thing I mentioned.

Edited to re-add the links that were stripped out of my post for unknown reasons.

You can load saved games. However you have to specify a parameter in the ini file, not sure if this is mostly NWNx or not, but i do remember there being a parameter for that. This is all quite a bit more complicated then what you want for casual play and was provided for those who are Persistent World admins.

Try not using that guide or server, and instead start the game with multiplayer and load whatever you want to load from there. Once you are in multiplayer it gives options to load a module, campaign or saved game.

How did you solve the "server timed out issue", just asking since it seems a lot of folks are having that issue.

I haven't solved the timeout issue. I need to wait until we're both available to try again, based on the suggestions in that thread (trying to host it using the nwn2server.exe, and/or port forwarding).

Knowing that I should be able to use a saved single-player game in a multiplayer session is a good start, though.

I looked in the ini files, but the only thing I saw that seemed relevant was that there was a separate folder for multiplayer saves.  I tried moving a saved game into the multiplayer save folder, and it appeared in the multiplayer list.  I think that solves that problem.  I'll report back whenever I can try the multiplayer connection again.
