Why Did Saren Need The Conduit?

So according to the story of ME1, the whole reason Saren is running around everywhere is to find the location of the Mu Relay so he can get to Illos to use the Conduit.

He wants to use the conduit so he can get onto the citadel and transfer control of it to Sovereign so he can reactivate the Citadel Relay to usher in his brethren in dark space.

OK, really cool story, but I have one problem with this...

Sovereign's choice for the agent he used to find and use the conduit was a SPECTRE, as in someone who doesn't have to play by the rules and has any resources he could want and all the clearence he would need.

So instead of going nuts and blowing his cover, why couldn't he have just walked into the citadel and transfer control to Sovereign quietly somehow instead of running around the galaxy trying to find the BACK DOOR (Conduit) into the Citadel.

I haven't played the game in years and I recently beat ME2 and was going over the ME wiki in order to get ready for ME3 and when I read the story of ME1 in condensed form, it didn't seem to make sense. Am I just missing/forgetting something from the game that isn't detailed in the wiki synopsis?

And yes I've read some of the other 1-2 year old threads about this on here but everyone keeps saying "it was so he could get onto the citadel without anyone knowing" or "so he could get deep into the citadel without fighting through security and whatever", stuff like that, which all goes back to why coudln't Sovereign just have him NOT go crazy and just act normal waltz in to wherever he had to to change control to Sovereign.

As I see it
The Reapers would have already moved in if not for a secret Prothean plot. Saren was sent about by Sovereign to investigate the details of this plot which required him to track down the plot to Ilos.
When Shepard and Tali produced evidence of Saren's treachery, Saren's SPECTRE status was revoked and he would no longer be able to just stroll in.
Of course, even as a SPECTRE citadel forces would have taken action if he had tried to take over the station (someone would notice!).
Geth are considered an enemy race so Saren had to use the conduit to get a significant force of them on board to help him take over.

1) Basically what Get Magna Carter says.
2) Until Saren got to Ilos Sovereign and Saren had no idea what the Protheans had done to stop the signal or if they had managed to do anything else to stop it being sent or harm the sender.
3) I basically feel that Saren went looking for beacons to find out who, what and where the signal obstruction occurred, found out about Ilos and the Conduit, lost his specter status, then came up with a plan to use it to get on board the Citadel after finding out what was done to the signal.
4) We are also not real sure how much Sovereign trusted Saren before he was implanted...ie, Sovereign couldn't be sure Saren wasn't playing a long game to stop him until after he got his implants and thus may not have wanted to let him wander into the heart of the Council he once served and may still have feeling for with a bunch of sensitive info on how to operate the Citadel.

I think there's something else you guys missed, though. The Conduit wasn't to get Saren to the Citadel. It was to get Saren's geth backup to the Citadel. We know that the controls are right smack-dab in the middle of the Council chambers. I'm willing to bet that even Spectres can't just waltz up and start messing with stuff without people noticing, so Saren needed a distraction or protection while he worked.

Alternately, Sovereign doesn't know exactly what's going on. He gets some info from beacons and learns that the Protheans used something called the Conduit to stop the Reapers from returning, but he doesn't know what it is or what it does, so he has to learn more. That's when he sends Saren to Eden Prime. But even then, Saren still needs the Thorian's cipher to work out what the Conduit is, but by that point, he was already stripped of Spectre status. So basically what Get Magna Carter said.

I'm curious as to how the conduit manages to stop being a mass effect relay and instead becomes a stargate

How Saren know itself about the word 'Conduit'?

or how Sovereign know about the 'Conduit itself?

yes why did saren want the conduit? , it doesn't seem to do anything for saren except helping to kill him. Plus why is there absolutely no importance of the conduit after this. seems just a way bioware put in to get you back to the citadel.

The earlier answers about him needing it to get the Geth into the Citadel make sense to me, though I agree that it's odd that it's not had a mention since. I'd guess that it's possibly because it only does one thing and that's get someone from Ilos to the Citadel Presidium without using the regular relays. As Shep & co can just rock up and dock at the Citadel like anyone else there's not much point in going all the way to the Terminus systems, then to the Mu Relay, then Ilos, then drive all the way down that trench, maybe stop off for some tea and a biscuit with Vigil, and then finally go through the Conduit. It's like you could get in your house by going over the back fence, getting up on the roof, dismantling part of it, finding your way through the roof space to the hatch and then dropping into the house.... or you could just use the front door. But you'd think the Council would be looking for a way to control or turn off the Conduit because even if they don't believe in Reapers they should believe that maybe someone with a grudge and an H-bomb could get to Ilos and wipe out the Council just by lobbing it through. A mention on the news that it's been moved or successfully disabled would have done, but I suppose it's possible that Shephard might be too busy deciding which is her favourite shop in the Citadel to listen to the news. :-)

Well, Saren was NOT a Spectre anymore after Shep brought to Council evidence of him going rogue. At that time Saren and Sovereign was still bringing pieces of the "Keeper fail" puzzle together ; they were looking for Prothean Cipher, Beacons and Mu Relay to determine their course of action. The reason for searching Ilos is kinda obvious : find and destroy the last Prothean's legacy to make sure the cycle of extinction will not be disrupted again.

Some protheans hid from the reapers on ilos and then after they were done murdering the whole galaxy (hundreds of years) they awoke from some sort of sleep/hibernation. They then used the conduit to get to the citadel, although it was abandonded they sabotaged the signal for the next race that finds the citadel. The VI on ilos explains all this.
