There's a reason what happens in Orlais, stays in Orlais...

What does the estate or their parents or feeling sorry for Gamlen or even whether the Amells *should* pay rent have to do with anything? The question is "is Gamlen paying to support the Hawkes now," and the answer is "yes."
I brought that stuff up ecause, for some reason, people feel compelled to make Gamlen out to be Santa when he is, in fact, the Grinch. Also because people assume the man has money to support them with when it's established that he spends his life frittering it away on booze, gambling and ****s.
Why does it have to make literal sense? All that statement says is that Gamlen feels entitled, there is no evidence to suggest that anything he says in this argument lines up with reality in any way. He's a selfish, delusional ****.If Leandra and the kids were already paying for food, the words "maybe put something towards food," aimed at them, would literally not make literal sense, any more than Gamlen saying "stop leaving your horse in my basement," and would be as likely to pass without comment by the people he's accusing. But Hawke's reply to Gamlen isn't "what are you even talking about, we already buy all the food." It's the same one you just made: "you supporting us is only fair, considering you stole from us."
Because Gamlen is supporting them. Whether or not he should be is a whole different issue.
At no point does anyone concede that Gamlen is supporting them. Leandra's response is "You sold my children into servitude and now you want us to pay rent?", which is an entirely different statement. Gamlen is not supporting them, he is incurring debts on their behalf, which they are working to pay off by themselves. What part of that suggests that they are being supported by him in any way?
As I said earlier; assuming he's renting and doesn't actually own the house, Gamlen's house has no utilities, there is no feasible way in which the Hawke family could be an extra financial burden on him. It's stated many times that Gamlen a) never leaves the house and
The idea that he even shops for food, let alone using his own money to pay for it, is ludicrous.

I'm not sure I've seen many people doing that.

He's pimping himself out at the Rose. That's why he really doesn't want you to tell leandra he's there every night.
...or maybe he just stands next to the standard service "entertainers" to make them look more attractive by comparison.

Anyway. In one of the banters with Bethany, she says Gamlen has been sneaking into her room. At first I thought that was damn creepy and then she says "I think he's rifling through my clothes looking for loose coins. I'm missing a silver eight."
So, maybe gambling, odd jobs and robbing from the Hawkes. Looks like the whole damn Amell estate wasn't enough to satisfy him, he has to steal what pocket change baby sister has!

To the OPs question, of 'what does Gamlen do for a living'? I think Mass Effect2's Captain Bailey has the best answer to that: 'Odd jobs for shifty people'.

That's what I think. The big thing is that he probably loses it all gambling, doing to the blooming rose, and drinking. Gamlen would probably be living quite comfortably if he didn't have all those vices or debt.haroldhardluck wrote...
As a former noble, Gamlen still has connections. Given that he knows smugglers and mercenaries, he probably makes money acting as a "go between" between those with money who need dirty deeds done discretely and those who can do those deeds. He is not in the top tier of the "go to" guys but is probably well known enough to get enough work to get by. If not for his gambling, I suspect he would be much better off than he is.
