I noticed that there is no Origin and ME3 thread since all got locked down.
And I think I know why (didnt bother to look through them).

I understand this one will be derailed and locked pretty soon too but all want to do is forward my request that you make a stickie on the subject as soon as you know some answers to our questions (from a thread where we compiled a list for you concerning Origin).
I think that is a fair request - I dont want to miss the update, I dont want to sift through various threads in fear I'll miss a post or two from you.

As a reminder - I just wish I wont be obligated to use Origin, I buy hard copies/ retail verisions of the games, I own previous ME games (as many other BW titles and RPGs in general) and would like to complete this collection and a joyfull vast ride of imagination. At the same time I draw a line, just because I'm tired and annoyed by the times I had problems with games I BOUGHT  - due DRM of various kind (why am I punished and inconvinced?).
What is important for me now is time. The pre-orders and deals are slipping one by one through my fingers and I still won't order a copy untill I know where I'm standing.

In short: a stickie, if you don't mind, as soon as possible if you can. Thanks in advance.

It seems you will need to install Origin, and be online, to play the game.

This stuff is subject to change I imagine, but it seems you will need Origin.

Dude, it says right there in the stuff you quoted "INSTALLATION OF ORIGIN CLIENT SOFTWARE".

Only required to access and play additional content, and to play online.

There's no mention of Origin being required for the product activation, and given how detailed each part of the terms and conditions is its not something they would leave out.

I might be misinterpreting this bit though:
REQUIRED TO PLAY, ACCESS BONUS CONTENT (IF ANY) AND ACCESS ONLINE SERVICES

I thought it meant Origin is required to play and access the bonus content, but it could mean its required to play the game, to access the bonus content and to play online.

Its a tad ambiguous.

Yeah, I missed the comma at the end of that. I though it meant Origin is required to play and access online content, but I think it means required to play, and required to access bonus content.

"REQUIRED TO PLAY", period.

That is separate from both "ACCESS BONUS CONTENT" and "ACCESS ONLINE SERVICES". That's why those commas are there. Otherwise it would specify by saying something like "REQUIRED TO PLAY BONUS CONTENT AND ONLINE MODES".

Yeah, my bad.

I was reading it as 'play/access additional content' instead of 'play the game, and access bonus content.'

EA MAY RETIRE ONLINE FEATURES AFTER 30 DAYS NOTICE POSTED ON WWW.EA.COM/2/SERVICE-UPDATES.

:/ - co-op/multiplayer may not even be a permanent feature of the game?

Lines of interest:
INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED FOR PRODUCT ACTIVATION

INTERNET CONNECTION, EA/ORIGIN ACCOUNT, ACCEPTANCE OF PRODUCT AND ORIGIN END USER LICENSE AGREEMENTS, INSTALLATION OF THE ORIGIN CLIENT SOFTWARE (WWW.ORIGIN.COM/ABOUT) AND REGISTRATION WITH ENCLOSED SINGLE-USE SERIAL CODE(S) REQUIRED TO PLAY, ACCESS BONUS CONTENT (IF ANY) AND ACCESS ONLINE SERVICES

To play Mass Effect 3, you will need to verify your copy, but it seems after activation you do not need to use Origin to play the game - I don't know whether you would be able to uninstall it, but you could probably simply turn it off or prevent it form accessing the internet using your firewall settings. In fact, you may not even need to install Origin at all to activate the product  it only mentions an internet connection.

However, to play any bonus content (DLC) and to play any online stuff you will need to be connected to the internet. I'm not sure how that'll work with the DLC character - I imagine you need to be connected to play the recruitment mission, but whether you need to be online to use the character afterwards I don't know. Having to be connected to Origin to play online was always going to be the case.

So basically: you only need Origin installed if you're going to play online or play additional content (whether the DLC character requires a connection remains to be seen, but if you're really opposed to Origin it might be better to just get the standard edition).

Hope this helps.

All of that is for games that are known to require Origin to play. It has not been confirmed yet that ME3 requires Origin to play.

That's just a standard disclaimer.  Lawsuit-proofing, just in case.

It likely isn't required by the game code itself (Jesse Houston said single-player doesn't need you to be connected at all times, so you'll at least be able to set Origin into offline mode). But, necessary or not, installation of Origin looks to be a condition you must agree to before you'll be allowed to install ME3. I'm guessing you won't actually have to have it running and can simply launch the game directly (whether co-op requires the client to be running is an open question), but they want to expand the installed base (not too different from the way MS made IE a mandatory part of Windows back in the day, or what Valve did with Steam and HL2, even though there was no compelling technical reason for it).

And yes, like the OP said, make a stickie about this subject answering the simple question of "Is Origin Required to play ME3?" This has gotten out of hand that the customers don't know with less than 2 months left until the release. It's inexcusable really.

His quote is from EAs website, and it's EA the one who decides it.

Of course it is.

Btw, I have heard rumors the EA is very happy to have aquired Bioware. They love their work, especially the music composed for their games. They are concidering using this as the official EA hymn:

At least that is the word on the steet.

Newsflash for the people who still don't understand.  The reason why no solid word has been put out yet is because they don't want people who are on the fence already to cancel their preorder's, they will put off confirming this until the last possible minute. Then they will confirm it and hope the close proximity to release date will prevent as many cancellations as announcing 3 months ago would have.

Especially considering both The Old Republic and Battlefield 3 players recieved official statements regarding Origin usage about 4 months prior the respective release date of each game. In case of TOR it was "no Origin required" statement, in case of Battlefield 3 it was "Origin is mandatory" statement. So if it was popssible to inform the customers about it whole 4 months prior the release of BF3 & TOR, I do not buy at all it is somehow impossible to do the same with ME3.

Of course I know that is the reason the question hasn't been answered. It's still a bad way to treat your customers and absolutely inexcusable.

And you gotta wonder how many people they're getting. I was about to pre-order ME3 from Newegg, when I remembered... Isn't this put out by EA? Didn't EA force Origin onto BF3, a game I stupidly bought and was very disappointed with the awful, intrusive Origin service?

So I headed over here to check... and I'm glad I did. This is what they don't want people to know, I guess.

Yes exactly. It's so obvious why they really haven't told us that it's funny. We all feel angry and frustrated about it (or at least a lot of us do) and we know that we're being treated badly as customers. The fact that they're so afraid that telling us would drop their sales of the game is a testament to the broad disapproval and distrust of their Origin program.

The lack of answers makes me wonder if there's some internal dispute going on between the ME guys and the EA higher-ups about tying ME3 to Origin.
