Also, I would hate for this thread to be locked. Shall we leave it as Steam and Origin also double as DRM, and that's that?

Was that ever a question then?

I was pointing out that there was a need.

No, I can't.  Not as long as the installation of spyware on my computer is a condition of using the product.

Yes, you can. You won't, but that's very much different from can't. Don't confuse where the decision lies.

Would you give Oster or LG a key to your residence as a condition of buying a microware?

Depends on the microwave, and how easy it is to change the locks afterwards.

Of course, this is moot because this isn't equivalent to what Origin is doing.

Not only is there a privacy and security concern, there's the simple fact that buying the game and installing Origin would be giving my approval and acceptance to EA's scheme, and I simply cannot in good conscience do that.

So don't. But recognize that you chose it, they didn't force you.

They are making a conditional offer for providing service. If you do not like the offer, you are under no obligation to accept it.

1) Giving Oster or LG a key to your house is EXACTLY equivalent to what EA wants from you as a condition of installing and playing ME3.

2) Software is a product, not a service.

3) When I say "I can't", I mean I can't.  Maybe you can, but I cannot.

EA and other software publishers claim that there's a need.

It's a cover for what they really want.  Control.  Access.  Data.

Plus Sonic Generations on PC uses Steamworks and that was cracked as well, also showed that the DLC promised is in the game already even though they still haven't released it officially.

Sonic was cracked day after release. :)

I didn't say Steamworks prevented all piracy, I said that it prevented 0 Day piracy (that is, piracy before the game is even released).

Forgive me if this goes wrong but I wanted to do some reasearch on Day 0 Day 1 with Steamworks.  Serious Sam Double D was cracked within five hours of being released on Steam.

Frankly though this is rather pathetic since this was a much smaller developer and the game was only $7.99.

Only thing id like to say on this issue: Buy Game - Download and Crack It - play it.

Remember, even if you actually purchase the game, and they get their money for their product, EA considers you "in violation" for doing what you just described.

Oh Killjoy, you need to remove your links in your signature.  They are horrendously out of date in terms of what Origin actually does.   It doesn't help your cause if you keep pushing out dated or down right false information.

That information shows EA's original intent, and what they will eventually try to get away with again once the noise has died down.

I honestly don't think so. I'm no fan of EA, but they know that if something like that happens again, even if the noise has died down, they'll lose even more sales.

How many years and how much outrage did it take for Facebook to finally be slapped down for the same kind of nonsense?  EA will do the same thing, it's what their ilk does.

No it shows your paranoia, in the original reports EA even apologized for this error in the program.  The way you are acting it's like you refuse to go outside because you may get hit by a meteor entering our atmosphere.

Oh, they appoligized, and claimed it was an "error" -- and I bet you think they were sincere and genuine, too?

It's called "public relations", wolfsite.  Stop drinking the coolaide.

As regards Facebook. Well, it's not like they have much competition; Google+ and that's it.

EA though? If they dare cross gamers again, they'll lose so many people to Steam. Again.

Market forces and needing consumers is what'll keep them in check.

Stop confusing an unwillingness to do something with an inability to do it.

Well. *shrugs* Your call. You can believe what you want, and use what you like. There are valid reasons for EA requiring DRM, though it doesn't have to be Origin. However, I don't think you're helping your case when you come across very... paranoid, like you do. But whatever.

Edit: Also, apologies to the mods. Didn't mean to create a whole storm of DRM/piracy talk. :innocent:

It's surrendering access to a private area of your life to a company in exchange for buying their product.

If you don't realize the strong parallels between the two, that's your problem.

No, it's providing a good.  There's the fundamental difference between a product, and a service.

The product is something you possess, that the provider cannot take away from you.  You may have to use it and obtain more later, but it's entirely yours.  The service needs to be purchased as long as it's provided and can be withheld by the provider at their whim.

Many in the software industry want to turn their product into a service, in order to increase their control and create a more constant revenue stream.

That you believe this is just about a few button presses is indicative of your failure to grasp the true nature of what is being discussed here.

Seriously we need to stop off topic in this thread or Chris will lock another Origin thread, so origin haters will have another reason for their hate.

They've wanted it to be a service for a long time.

As long as the customer has a physical copy and an installation that can't be remotely disabled, it's a product.

Thus, software like Steam and Origin for controlling access to purchased software -- so that the product can be artificially transformed into a service

We've seen some of EA's PR spin, sure.
