If you give your permission, it's everything goes. And you can see the problem right in this thread. All too many people obviously have no problem with that. That's what generation facebook is like.

I wonder if they were as open minded if some company wanted to access their house to look at their living conditions. You've got nothing to hide after all, right?

Maybe we should just go all the way... change the laws so that gathering, buying, trading, and selling information about someone by any non-governmental entity, other than for strictly personal use, would be criminal, both on the level of charges against the company or other group entity, and on the level of felony criminal chargees against individuals. The individual would have to opt-in, in writing, and could not be required to opt-in as a condition of a service or product being provided. The only exception would be information strictly, directly, and clearly necessary to the provision of that product or service.

I am 1000% behind this and, in fact, I think it should be in an amendment to the US Constitution.  I would generally make it unlawful for any entity to collect and maintain any personally identifiable information.

I keep reading all these replies about how, "I've got nothing to hide." and, "It's just like steam though."

For me, I understand where a lot of these people are coming from, especially on the Steam front. I remember first installing it with HL2 back when it a colossal piece of dung. The difference is, Valve didn't go the EA approach and say, "What!? Our thing doesn't suck, you all suck!" and give a middle finger to the consumer. They realized their colossal piece of dung was that - dung. But they turned it around, they fixed it, they worked with the industry, and now have an overwhelming percentage of the market to show for it.

I trust Valve. I don't mind what Valve does, I opt-in for their surveys willingly. Plus, Steam has -NEVER- scanned my entire hard-drive, while the first time I installed origin I was suspicious, and then horrified as it started scanning my entire drive -BEFORE I EVEN ACCEPTED THE TERMS OF AGREEMENT-

Obviously this was before the changes to Origin, but the point definitely remains. They did it once, and knowing EA, they could very well do it again. Most likely without telling any of us, and the second anyone complains to them, they can hold your games hostage. You as a consumer do not have a legal right to any of your games on Origin, EA can take them from you in the blink of an eye until you submit to their demands.

To me, that is utter horse****, and nothing will convince me otherwise.

That's been my question -- would they accept Oster or Lucky Goldstar telling them "give us a key to your house and the combination to your safe or lockbox, or you can't buy any of our appliances".

But, sadly, as you say, Generation Facebook / Generation Survivor seems to believe that it's a GOOD thing when everyone can see everything about them and know everything about them.

Repost - it seems it's fair for everyone.

Do you guys really believe that Origin is the only spyware? Steam does it too (in a smaller rate ofc). Do you think you have any privacy nowadays ? I'm not a fan of theories etc, but that is the truth I know from a friend that works in counter intelligence. Hell he even showed one once recording when I talked dirty with my girlfriend including few of my personal text messages. Then I believed he was telling the truth. Cellphones, emails, every call, every text message is registered not only by your operator but also by country security. It is a common world wide practice. The same goes for emails, the same for kinect and other things we think are useful. There is less and less privacy and some people really cant see it. Those agencies use every single thing we use everyday  just to spy on us. Why? Probably country security blah blah, as far as I know they store "ur" stuff in their archives for 10 years.. Yet it seems to be fine for us. Sadly Killjoy and Feanor you're both in this too, and you dont have to use Origin to be spied on. I expect lots of people to disagree with me. They will say it is illegal because of constitution, law, etc... but do you think they care ? I dont think so.

I don't use Origin or Steam.

I don't use Kinect.

I do other things to protect my information privacy and security that I won't discuss in a public venue.

But you cant protect yourself when you're using cell phone, send emails, surf on the internet, etc... it's all easy accesss and they already have it without most people knowing about it. I'm not arguing here, but I'm just telling something that really is happening.

Sorry, but I'm gonna call your bluff.

I don't know how the authorities do things in your country, but where I live, the government is a bunch of morons with an utter lack of know how when it comes to ICT. So I find it hard to believe you.

And what's actually the  point you're trying to make here? Just f*ck it and open my front door and invite everyone on my computers because you say everything is known by everyone already?

Well, I thought an education and a decade in the Infomation Technology profession were useful tools here, but now that I've heard the side of the friend of some random dude on the internet, I realize it's hopeless and I should just let EA bend me over a barrel and do as they will.  Thank God for friends of random dudes on the internet!

Doesn't mean you have to invite an additional vampire.

Sure, you get spied on. But you still got some anonymity since even the government agencies, who usually like to know the color of your current underpants, can't possibly go through all the data collected. They scan for certain keywords.

Am I outraged by this? Sure. And being spied on doesn't mean I drop my pants for every wayward company coming along. I already get enough localised ads in my browser windows by IP scanning, thank you very much. I don't even want to imagine the scale of advertorial Sh..storms when someone really thinks they figured out what you might buy next.

Source or quit spreading mis-information.

Don't have a source? Then don't post belief as fact.

I can just about get behind the fact that Origin might be bad, because EA is as corporate as they get. But that's just a belief. I don't have any proof. But Steam? Nah, I'm going to ask you to back that one up. With, y'know, facts. Or you're just as bad as the rabid pro-Origin/Pro-Steam fanboys and their endless ranting.

Thats exactly the kind of victim mentality that makes people loose their common sense (if they had any to begin with).

Sorry, but no.

The tone of some of the posts in this thread are getting a little hysterical and conspiracy theorist-y. Let's try and keep the thread related to Mass Effect 3, please.

I didn't mean that you should open your door and let them in. Don't allow them too. Mister they do it everywhere, say what you like, think what you like. Also, eyeofastorm try to avoid more sarcasms. I'm not trolling here anyone, but clearly some people can't stop themselves from trying to ne funny.. No one has to believe me, I dont give a f*** about this. I've just said what is going on.
Emoking, do not call me pro-Origin/Pro-Steam fanboy. I am not. I have the source, but sending such informations to random people all over the internet would certainly get me unwanted attention.
I knew some people would start insulting me after my post, but it wont work (just like Relix and eyeofastorm tried).

Ok Stanley Woo time to get this thread on it's track. (btw ithose aren't conspiracy theories lol)

I'm hoping for an eventual Steam release, so I can add it to my library, but I'm still going to be pre-ordering the Collector's Edition, most likely from my local EB Games because I like the exclusives - because I want to support the developers. Mass Effect 3 is going to be awesome whether it uses Origin or not, and I'm not going to let it stand in the way of a great game.

Words absolutely fail me.

And you know what? You're just as bad as the people you lash out at. You know who else uses your line? "Oh, we can't release the source, people'll get in trouble" Military and intelligence services. At least with them, lives are actually at stake. You, you don't want to release the source of something about Steam. Good gravy.

Hi Stan, folks are getting a bit jumpy because back in late september Casey said he was going to get us the info (in a couple of days as per his quote) regarding if Origin is going to be attached in any way to ME3 and pretty much since then no info.

First acquiring the source would cost me and my friend few years in jail + sending it to random people (e.g. you) as a proof would cost me more years in jail. I dont mean steam.  So yeah, I would rather prefer to protect my ass insetad. Keep on insulting.
