Highly doubtfull. EA - like pretty much everyone else in the industry - has been looking for a piece of the Steam pie for a long while. That and there's corporate level thinking:Boomer-Australia wrote...
They will probably back out of orgin in a couple of years or sooner (hopefully)
We have the following situation; a project that's failing and with problems that lie so deep the only possible sollution is to just scrap it and cut your losses. However you've already invested a lot of money in it, so naturally the only sollution worth to even think about is to throw more money and resources at it in the hope it does eventually succeed.
Honestly, personally I don't mind EA trying to compete with Steam. Heck, being the dirty capitalist that I am, I welcome competition. It's the shoddy and self-sabotaging execution of Origin that's defies commen sense. I mean look at it; when even the name of the platform is offensive to those with long memories, you can't help but wonder if the first line on the design document was "make this as unappealing to our customers as possible".
if this makes prices on steam even cheaper I'm good with it, but I doubt there will be a major increase in competetion for steam

]The EULA was changed last August.
They no longer have the right to send any kind of data to third parties of any kind.
I'm not even sure they're allowed to collect the data int he first place now according to their own EULA.

I buy the game, but then i've got to hook up to the net to 'authorise' my purchase (I just bought the retail version you schmucks) and let Origin gain access to my data on my PC.
I bet If i tried hacking their database i'd be sued to kingdom come - but its ok for them to do it to us?

It's different. You can choose not to install Origin and agree to the EULA. I bet EA would never agree to let you hack into their database.marstor05 wrote...

By the looks of it, there won't be. That's why this thread was created. Two different EULAs tell us installation of Origin is required for all PC versions.Kronner wrote...
Who cares? There will be Origin-less ME3 PC version anyway. I am not installing Origin or similar crap to my computer, that's for sure.

No. You just need to have something they desperatly want and make them accept a deal giving you rights to start looking around in their database in order for them to get what they want.

So I assume you don't work on your computer, don't use it for banking or taxes. You don't use it for personal conversations with friends and family.
All of this says about all about you and leaves you wide open to all kinds of fraud up to identity theft.
What I want to say is this. Even if Origins sticks to a minimum, there's no guarantee they won't be hacked some time in the future. It happened to major players and their servers and bank- as well as credit card details became more or less public.
You're comfortable with that?

Fortunatly I'm a student and the most they will get is my project on the slave trade during the industrial revoloution, but I know what you mean...bad joke aye...
Anyway I'm concerned about them getting my credit card details and EA/Origin getting hacked therefore my details possibly being used by someone other then myself

I personally don't do any of that on my PC, except for banking but I do that online through a browser. Origin doesn't go through your files, it uploads filenames, so I doubt they'll read through your msn chatlog.abaris wrote...

But it opens a door, a door you invited them through.
That door can be abused if they happen to be hacked. And don't say it can't happen. It's not that long ago that major companies stood there with their pants around their ankles whilst thousands of users had lost their credit card details to some hack attack.

What about those of us who do keep tax records, finacial data, personal account information, etc. on our computers? It doesn't sounds like you have much to worry about, but a lot of us do. As much as I like Bioware, I've known EA corporate for a long time. I don't trust them any farther than I can throw them, and their an awfully heavy company.
If they would just remove that clause from the EULA that they reserve the right to do whatever they want if they feel like it this whole thing would blow over. Since they seem to adamantly not want to do that, it tells me outright that they have an agenda that they want to keep secret.

As I said, Origin only uploads filenames. Unless yo have text files that have your personal information as filenames (which you don't) you don't have to worry about that. That doesn't mean I approve of what they do.Homey C-Dawg wrote...

Yeah, but you open a backdoor to your data. Regardless of what Origin does. Their servers can access your computer at their leisure. So everyone having access to their server can do a little sniffing.
And it's not as if corporate hacking was soemthing unheard of.

I'm glad you don't approve either, but I think the difference here is that you sound more willing to trust that they won't change what they do or doen't collect on a whim, which they reserve the right to do. As I said, due to my own experiences over the years I don't trust EA corporate at all.
If they made all data collection optional like steam, I would have no problem at all.

Steam is a lot more open about their data collection. You can see what they know and you compare daat specs to others. I wish Origin were more transparent and that their data collection were optional.
Indeed. It's incredibly fishy that EA adamantly refuses to make it optional.

That's moving the blame away. "Oh, I'm dreadfully sorry I'm kicking you in the nuts as you entered my store. But don't be angry with me. Blame the people who didn't enter my store".Icinix wrote...
I believe the people who we should be blaming are the millions of morons who believe they are entitled too something for nothing.
It doesn't matter what their intentions are; they are responsible for their own actions.
Besides; on the corporate level in all industries, DRM has long ago stopped being really about preventing piracy and started revolving around the desperate need for control.
This ought to be obvious given that at this point even the most clueless of people should realise that piracy is in no way, shape or form hindered by DRM and yet it is still being used and still mind-boggling ammounts of resources are being poured into developing new forms of DRM that do nothing but annoy their paying customers and give the companies more control over how their product is used by the paying customer.

Steam also asks you if you want to allow data collection or not. If you say no, nothing gets collected.
