So I assume you don't work on your computer, don't use it for banking or taxes. You don't use it for personal conversations with friends and family.

I don't feel comfortable with them looking at ANYTHING in my computer without my explicit permission. Want to know what games do I play? Ask. It's simple. Then I'll decide if I let you.

Letting them look into my computer is more or less the same than letting a EA worker take a look into my room.

You know, it's because of people like you that our society is going down the toilet. No sense at all, no care or attention to logic or reasoning, to reality. That is why because of you people, SOPA is on the verge of getting passed by bought-out congress members, the US economy is all but dead, and corporate bullies like EA are trying to rip away rights from their customers, just because they believe they can. Fat pretentious idiots, those EA execs are.

EA has no business looking at my files, nor will I for any reason allow them to do so. Do I have anything bad or incriminating on my computer, not in the slightest, but that doesn't justify a thing about what their OriginSpyware is doing.

And before the classless LOCKDOWN! / lie excuse, Bioware/EA, know this:

By your insulting silence and censoring behavior you have confirmed OriginsSpyware will be required for Mass Effect 3.

You find what I say insulting to you, Bioware? Guess what, your behavior and the way you treat your once-loyal fans is insulting.

Yo.
Well, the lawyers in my country have spoken (on pages of Daily Legal Newspaper) - selling used games is legal.  Quoted after
http://www.cdaction.pl/news-24313/

(...)means that after selling it, the manufacturer can not protest against the sale (reselling) by the first purchaser.

This applies on Polish territory, and also on the European Economic Area. A license agreement? They can not restrict this right. Dr. Michalak says:

The provision of exhaustion of rights is a mandatory provision and the parties can not contractually modify it.

...

Online passes - one-time codes included in the new copies that unlock access to multi or additives DLC. Thus, the original purchaser will not sell the same product, which he bought. This may mean that the buyer does not buy the game, but only a developer commitment to provide entertainment. Attorney Thomas Lustyk believes that it is incompatible with the rights of consumers:

Most people who acquire this game, however, is not aware of whether to buy or enters into a contract. For these reasons, I believe that such practices of game producers may be inconsistent with the rights of consumers and the obligations imposed on players decorum.

So in short, reselling gamas is OUR RIGHT.
Practices like Origin or Steam are in contradiction with EU law. Apart from being morally indecent, a game should be a product we can resell. Things like buying a game = a lifetime commitement is plain exploit.
Why do we have to put up with this I ask?

Do appreciate that btw.

Think theres a chance we can get any information about this before March 6th? I know it's an uncomfortable subject, but people are waiting.

Which will happen when? We've been really patient Chris. Both Battlefield 3 and The Old Republic players got their answers regarding Origin months earlier then we will. It's a really important issue for us.

Theres BSN for you.

Uh, Relix twisted Priestly's words mainly for the fact he hasn't been getting the answers we needed. "We'll get you the answers soon" doesn't cut it considering we're two months from release.

Considering most places allow you to cancel your preorder right up to release day, knowing any time before you receive the game is plenty of time.

I also will wait for official word before I decide to keep or cancel my pre-order from Gamestop.  I use Steam (400+ games) and was disappointed it will not be available on that platform.  Steam is enough DRM for me and I'm not interested in having games on multiple sites (although I do have a few on GOG that simply aren't available elsewhere and GOG games have no DRM and are Win7 compatible).  To be honest, I would prefer a disk in hand with no online activation, but those days seemed to have passed.

After DA2, Bioware lost a great deal of my respect.  Like so many on this forum, I have a lot of hours invested in ME1 and ME2 and would like to see the final installment in the Shephard story, however, not if it means it's tied to an Origin account.  I have goggled what others have suggested as a workaround -- isn't that sort of like a partition???  I'm an old gamer, but know little about how computers work.   I have Maingear build PC's for me -- I guess I could get them to figure it out and implement but I'm not sure that's sending the message I would like to send to EA.  Oh, and pirating simply isn't an option for me -- never have, never will.

Also, this is strictly a gaming PC -- I don't even have MS Word loaded on it.  So, it's not that I have something to hide or need to keep hidden (like work or financial info), it's just feels like EA's business practices seem soooo sleazy and intrusive.  I actually participated in Steam's survey voluntarily.  So, in the end, if it's a requirement,  I will cancel.  I'm actually on the fence anyway that it won't just be another DA2 disaster (with multiplayer) and have no resemblance whatsoever to ME1 or ME2 other than certain characters names.

It really saddens me to see what's happening to what was once a great developer.   I have played all of Bioware's games back to the 90's.  This will be the first pass on one of their games (other than MMO's which I don't play).  I'm going to try and stay optimistic and hope Origin is not a requirement and I will be able to play, however, it doesn't look encouraging from their website.  There are still alot of other games coming out in 2012 to look forward to, so it's not the end of the world -- just the end of my association with Bioware.  When you get as old as I am you realize that everything comes full circle in life and, eventually, someone will fill the void left when Bioware became associated with EA.  It just takes time which all you kids on the forums have plenty of!!  Maybe as some of the creative minds leave Bioware/EA, they will form their own company and continue to produce great games.

Well this shows how much people dislike this abomination of a software and I've got an idea: why don't you take all these closed threads about (or better against) Origin, add the open ones demanding Origin free retail copies and also the ones asking for a Steam version, print them all out and then send this papertower over to the CEOs at EA. Sounds like a great idea, don't you think?

There's been at least two 100+ pages Origin threads here already, do you know how much paper would that require?:P

I'll just echo what others have said, that it is extremely fishy that it's so difficult to get an answer to this issue. I can only think of two different reasons for this:

1) They are already well aware that ME3 will require Origin, but have been instructed not to release that information to the public until the last possible moment. If this is the case, I'm through with EA and by extension BioWare.

2) EA is pushing very hard to have Origin as a requirement, but BioWare is pushing back, and it actually hasn't been decided yet.

I'd like to believe it's scenario 2, but I have a feeling it's scenario 1. If anyone can think of any other reason for why we've been waiting for the answer for months, well, I'd love to hear it!

(Only slightly OT, I don't envy Mr. Priestly - I'm sure he has explicit orders about what he can and can't say in this issue.)

OK, while we wait for an answer to the main Origin question is there any news on the other Origin issue? There is still no backup feature supported by Origin and with ME3 fast approaching and games like DA:O taking up 27 GB I'd imagine myself and others who buy digital downloads will be freeing up some space by uninstalling other games.

The main problem with Origin (in features at least) is when it comes time to reinstall and we are required to once again download these games at 6GB, 11 GB, 27 GB etc. and it can take hours or even days just to play a game. And lets not forget about an interrupted install where Origin might mandate a reinstall attempt from a fresh download.

Since Origin will almost certainly be required could we at least get this feature implemented prior to ME3's release?

This stalling, ducking and dodging of the question is making it more likely not to buy this game even if Origin is not required. Just shady business IMHO. They know the answer to the question.

I have made my position clear. As long as I have to install and let origin have free reign over my pc, I shall not purchase me3. Or any other bioware game for that matter

That's not really an "Origin problem".  It's a potential drawback of any digital download service. You're in exactly the same boat if you've bought a game on Steam or off Direct2Drive and you don't keep the install files around (which  Origin actually allows you to do).

I don't understand why is it that they can't give us a straight answer. Is it because BioWare doesn't know? Is it because they just came back from break? Is it because they know people would be outraged? Can't they at least give us a valid reason as to why they're not talking, not the "We will tell you when we know more" which says absolutely nothing.

I've had to deal with this kind of silence before and it worries me because the last time that it happened the company that did it refused to talk about it for at least 2 years and because of it a lot of people had no input on how the direction of the game that company was developing. I really wish there was something that could be done to force them to give us an answer.

And the lack of an opt out clause just tells me they're more interested in selling my information than preventing piracy anyway.

I cannot comment on whether Origin allows you to backup the games since I have never used Origin (and never will).  However Steam does give you the ability to backup your games to DVD.  There is a feature in steam that will allow you choose which games you back up.  It will then compress them and put them into handy DVD size files that you can burn to DVD so if something happens to your hard disc you can restore your games from that backup.

Now if it is true that Origin does not provide a method for backing a game up then that is pretty weak and just another example of EA dropping the ball and expecting PC gamers to settle for a second rate system.
