So I woke up this morning, turned on my PC, signed into my Steam account, launched Mass Effect 2 and suddenly everything was erased. The game launched at a lower res, it asked me for the activation code and whatnot and the only option was to start a new game. I have put more than 100 hours in that game, what do I do?

Ck your my documents folder and see if it got moved or some such. It sounds like the Bioware folder got corrupted or moved by some program, possibly antivirus or some such.
If you don't have a backup then you are pretty much out of luck if the files are completely gone, you may can recover the saves but lose the bonuses if you are only semi-lucky.

There were serious issues with the Steam servers over the last few days, and users on different gaming forums have reported similar issues, ranging from being unable to play their games due to not being able to sign in, game preferences and configurations being reset, through to missing saves.
While some people have had similar issues in the past on the non Steam version, the timing of your problems, coupled with the Steam outage and various reports from other forums, is too coincidental to not consider. I would strongly suggest in future you keep Steam in offline mode until you actually need it go online to purchase another game, or patch an existing one that has issues.

What I have done is that all the folders that I had in my Documents I put them all into a single folder. Maybe that caused it.
