Dragon Age 2 was by far my favourite game of 2011

It was my favourite game of 2011 too. Not sure if that says anything about the quality or just how picky I am about what I require out of my games. DA2 came closest to what I was after, and with all its faults it wins.

2011 was a pretty damn good year for games for me overall.  With the likes of Sonic Generations, Tales of Xillia, Uncharted 3, Dark Souls, Ni no Kuni, Arkham City, Rayman Origins, Mortal Kombat, Alice: Madness Returns, Little Big Planet 2, InFamous 2, Deus Ex:Human Revolution, Saints Row: The Third, Shadows of the Damned, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, Catherine, El Shaddai, L.A Noire, Skyrim and many others I am forgetting at the moment.

Out of all the games I bought in 2011 though, by FAR my favourite was Dragon Age 2.  I was actually afraid before it arrived that I would be disappointed by it because I was so in love with Origins but it was the complete opposite.  I played through the game 6 times in a row (now 9 times in total) and I have have not completed a second play through of any game this gen, no matter how much I loved it (the R&C Future games and Uncharted 1&2 are some examples of games I started again but never finished).  I ended up buying the game 4 times, twice on the PS3 and twice on the 360.  It was only my crappy old laptop that stopped me from buying the PC edition.  I hated all the negativity in the press and from the gaming public about DA2 because in my eyes, it did not deserve most of it.  Personally, I don't think the game should have been called "Dragon Age 2" as it is more like Dragon Age Gaiden to me.   I think that alot of the flack would have been lessened if it did not have that "2" in the title.  I especially hated the negative response to the all "bi"
romance options, but I would expect nothing less from todays gaming
crowd.

DA2 was far from perfect I know.  Did it have only 6 battle maps repeated over and over again through the whole game? Sure.  Did the last chapter feel like a rushed mess with 60% of the intended story missing?  Yes it did.  What made the game so special for me was the charcters and THAT is always the thing that makes a lasting impression on me in an RPG or any game in general, along with the story.  I know the overall story of DA2 was not fantastic on it's own, but there were so many memorable moments and quests that it didn't matter to me.  Although there was no Alistair or Morrigan in DA2, I still became very attached to some of them, most of all Anders.  I really wanted to play Ferris' romance storyline in one of my playthroughs but I loved the Anders one so much I never did.

DA2 also ignited my love of BioWare and because of that, I bought the PC versions of DA:Origins, Neverwinter Nights, KOTOR (LOVED it!  I wish I played the XBOX version for more than 5 minutes back in 2003, I didn't "get" the way "Western" RPGs played at that time) and the XBOX version of Jade Empire.  Although not directly related to BioWare, I also bought The Witcher and loved it too, even though it played like a dog on my laptop.  I also decided to try Oblivion which I only played for about 3 hours before turning it off for good.  Thank God I loved Skyrim!

So why am I writing all of this when nobody will care?  Simply because I want to let BioWare know how much I loved the game and how special it now is to me.  Although there were also many games I was extremely excited to get in 2011
such as Ni no Kuni, Tales of Xillia, Skyrim and Sonic Generations, one of the most exciting
moments of the year for me was downloading the first DLC pack which was
amazing, as was the second.  Dragon Age:Origins/DA2 are the only Western games to make it into my personal top 5 favourite games, and that has not changed since  December 1997 when Grandia was released for the Saturn!  Thank You BioWare for creating such amazing experiences for your fans, I hope you never change.

Congratulations. I'm glad somebody got a lot out of it, and I imagine BioWare would be, too.

Love your work in PC Gamer, BTW. (just kidding :o)

DA2 was terrible.

I just wanted to let Bioware know that as well.

Yes god forbid someone post a positive opinion in a non trollish manner without having the thread jumped on by those who hate the game.

You guys need to grow up and move on.

I really enjoyed the game as well. No doubt one of my favorite game's of 2011.

It wasn't perfect. Got a lot of things wrong, got a lot of things right.

But in the end for me the good outweighed the bad. :)

My favorite game of 2011 as well.

Sure, it had its faults like any other, but overall I enjoyed it immensely.

Not everyone was happy with it, but hey.. that's life for you.

DA2 is still better than I feared despite the reused maps. It's certainly a big disappointment though.

That's quite a statement to make considering how many amazing games were released this year. As for me, I couldn't disagree more. It was probably the worst game Bioware has ever made.

Considering the OP stated he liked it other people said they didn't It hardly constitutes jumping all over the thread, or are all threads consigned to be gushing over the game? So what is the complaint, a thread stating it was their favorite has people stating they hated it, which is like every thread which criticises it is jumped on by people stating they're wrong.

This is the equivalent of the pot calling the kettle black.

Edit: If pointing out such hypocrisy makes me sound like a jerk, then those that claim the high ground and then throw stones from it are arguably bigger arses.

I keep getting this feeling (in fact I myself may even be such a victim) that *romance* clouds ones judgement when attempting to criticize a game. It's always more exciting to see how your love interest will be reacting to situation A, B, C or D making the game very replayable, but with limits to objectivity. I keep wondering what yay or naysayers would say had there not been romance.

The day Bioware makes a big RPG without romances will be the day these forums are littered with 'Why are there no romances?' every 2 hours.

Oh I just meant, how strong the effect of well written romance has on ones opinion of a game on the whole, as stated in the OP. The OP romances Anders.

Edit: Love can cloud ones judgement, and flaws if any don't look so bad.

DA2 felt like a cash in, DA had a large enough following that Bioware took at chance at making an anime to follow DA2 while it was in production. I don't blame them, lots of companies make cash in games for sequels.

The OP was a perfectly harmless, non trollish post about how he liked the game it was followed by a succession of  negative posts like those concerned couldn't wait to pile on and invalidate the opinion. To me that consitutes jumping all over the thread. As for your implication that my post implies that I think all threads should be gush threads your making an assumption and you know what they say about those.............

If someone makes a reasoned post against the game I don't jump all over them so where's the hypocrisy.

I thought the DLCs were better than the actual game

I didn't. I hated it. But that's me.

I'm refraining from posting why I didn't like the game, because I've done that many times before.

DA2 is still the worst game I played, I never bothered finishing it because of the boring story and recycled environments.

If stating the opposite constitutes invalidating an opinion then one's own opinion is on weak ground if it requires validation to give it credit.

The arguments against DA2 have been expounded on at length numerous times, I don't think one has to re list each one again simply for the benefit of stating they didn't like it.

If that is the sole requirement to post things such as "hater's going to hate"/ "grow up" etc. in response to a simplistic statement of "I hate it." Then it is as hypocritical as those that dislike DA2 spaming threads with "Biodrone." But complaining when the other party does the same.
