Dragon Age 2 was by far my favourite game of 2011

Its a new aspect in the series- and a poorly implemented one, I seriously think Bethesda should have just left that out. Other than homecooked meals and sleep bonuses having a spouse is rather moot (unless you pick a wife or hubby that can tag along with you in your adventures- then kind of fun).

I actually found it pretty funny how all the woman who was supposed to be the love of my character's life ever had to say to him was "hey thanks for bringing back the claw:wizard:"

See that's what I mean when I say comparing Skyrim to DA2 in some ways is kind of asinine, since they clearly have different goals in mind even if they're both "RPGs."

Oh that chick from Riverwood? Heard Faendal like practically lives in your home after you marry that chick. I dunno I personally never explored the "Marriage" thing in Skyrim- find it pointless unless your lovey-dove can romp around with you all across the vast wilderness and I haven't found a character I actually find attractive (let's face it looks are about all ya' look for in Skyrim) let alone a match for my Dunmer. Thinking about the Dark Elf from the College, but meh- again the whole idea of it sort of moot.

If only you could build off that romance maybe- just maybe, but- nope. I have Bioware geames for the whole romance thing and a decent conversation with party members. Erandur was the only companion I enjoyed taking along with me in Skyrim, never complained- but had a bad case of amnesia.

xD

Totally agree with that.

All the Bioware charm is there. The charm that made so many of us love Origins and Mass Effect and Jade Empire and KOTOR and Baldur's Gate. The venom is strangely toothless and juvenlie. And at this point, nearly a year later...it's kind of pathetic.

Well, from someone who only played ME and DA:O from the rich list of Bioware games, let me tell you that if I look at DA2 there is not very much to be found of the charm Origins had. And I'll never understand why it is pathetic to care for a franchise that has taken a turn into a new direction many fans of the first installment simply don't like.

DA2 was, and that is fact, among the biggest dissapointments of my gaming life, and I will not quit trying to tell why. Unless DA3 shows me wether the franchise  is saved for me, or wether I can finally let the fantastic Dragon Age universe go.

I didn't think there was a marriage in DA2, except for Aveline and her husband. I thought the romances were still just the dating phase...with such person living in the manor as well.

Skryim's pros outweigh its cons, so the shallow romances can be overlooked. Whereas DAII's pros are so far and few between the cons can't be overlooked.

That said, this was something I criticized over in the Skyrim thread in the Off Topic section. The romances have no real effort put into them when I have no doubt that Bethesda could've made some decent romances if they tried. Would they be Bioware good? Highly unlikely. Would they be good? Probably. Aela the Huntress is my favorite follower -- married her and she's gone with me ever since I could make her my follower -- but I sadly don't get to know her that well.

What's worse is that, because there's no real sense of a relationship developing, her calling me "dear" doesn't feel right.

Because it really just is this:

"You're single? Great, let's get hitched!"

*gets married*

"I love you dear".

I do think DAII did the romances right, though I also think that the companions weren't given enough screen time. For a game that's supposed to encompass a decade -- and in reality only has a few select years -- you only have little over a year's worth of dialogue for each companion (since DAII has slightly more companion dialogue than DAO did)

What is better written? The written part or the non-written?

I didn't think it was the best (I think that goes to Skyrim, Portal 2, or Revelations) but I really did enjoy it.

After some reflection, I decided that Dragon Age 2 was also my favorite game of the year. Definitely not the best, but that's an entirely separate concept.

Was it flawed? Yes, severely. Was it better than Origins? Nah.
But I still like it a lot, regardless.

I think Dragon Age II failed in more interesting ways than Skyrim succeeded.

Wow, I guess I CAN have my cake and eat it too.

Skyrim and DA2 cannot be compared. Stop doing it, they share no similarities. I actually prefer DA2 to Skyrim, simply because DA2 has a storyline and actual roleplaying opportunities; despite them being ****** poor.

TW2 and DA2 can be compared, but DA2 is so badly roflstomped by TW2 in every aspect it's not really worth it.

Not necessarily. I liked them both a great deal. It's just that Skyrim is good but not quite great, and DA2 is great but not quite good... if that makes any sense.

Yes. Really. We're allowed to still post what disappointed us about DAII just as much as the people who liked it are allowed to say what they loved about DAII.

So long as it doesn't devolve into "You're an idiot for liking the game", there is nothing wrong with someone saying they were disappointed with DAII in threads where the quality of the game is being discussed.

If people can keep on saying "DAII was great!" then they shouldn't have any problem with people saying "DAII was horrible!"

These forums aren't restricted solely to those people that share the same viewpoint as the OP.

Clearing up a minor misconception here for  fairness:  Skyrim doesn't  have romances,  and it  never claimed to have them.     It has marriage.  And Skyrim's marriages  are designed with the Lore of the game in mind.   That is to say, their purpose is for survival in a harsh land where life is short, not lovey dovey  romancing or  "dating"  or whatever.

And that  is such an unimportant feature in the game anyway.  It shocks me that people talk about it so much.

There are numerous reasons to stick around these subforums that don't require one to actually have liked DAII. Speculative theories, dev comments on the future of the series, new releases, the friends on these specific subforums, discussing ways the future of the series could be improved, etc.

Like the OP said, there were a lot of great games this year. But the only that kept drawing me back? DA 2, warts and all. Why? It's charming, it's different, it has a compelling story and characters, and it's a satisfying role playing experience. (Skyrim is just running around in a world without a story or even direction...I try so hard to role play in Skyrim...it just doesn't happen. There's a huge disconnect with me and the character. It has its charms, true, but it has glaring weaknesses as an strong RPG. The two games are apples and oranges.) And for those that CONTINUE to crap on the game....I still call BS. You're disappointed, maybe, that it didn't become a sequel that YOU envisioned. But to call it the worst game of the year? Sounds like hyperbole, mindless group think (hey look, we'll all post the same thing!), and overexaggeration. All the Bioware charm is there. The charm that made so many of us love Origins and Mass Effect and Jade Empire and KOTOR and Baldur's Gate. The venom is strangely toothless and juvenlie. And at this point, nearly a year later...it's kind of pathetic.
