Dragon Age 2 was by far my favourite game of 2011

I personally not only found DA2 to be the most disappointing game of 2011 that couldn't hold a slimmer of a candle to my favorite of the year (which also happens to be my favorite ever), I say without any exaggeration that it is the game I was disappointed with the most ever and the game that irritates me the most (disappointing, not bad mind you. Mediocre at best imo). An opinion I've shared a lot of times with a lot more detail.
In any case, I am glad you enjoyed it so op.

DA2
Skyrim's great but could have been better . Looking forward two KOA and Mass Effect 3. The marriage system was a complete failure Beth.

I thought it was brilliant because of the progression of Anders as a character, honestly. They handled it well, it came out of nowhere even though I thought he was up to no good, and it made me think about what to do come endgame.
I didn't have a true problem with Anders' action, in and of itself, truly. He did what he thought he had to do, for whatever reason. The whole thing can be debated.
But that's not what I am talking abouit. When I saw how Act 3 began, with Meredith and Orsino arguing in the streets, I knew that was going to be how that act ended - with a fight between Meredith and Orsino. Each Act was pretty predictable in that fashion. Act 1 started out with Varric approaching you about going into the Deep Roads - so Act 1 ended with you going into the Deep Roads with Varric. Act 2 started out with the Viscount talking to you about the Qunari - so Act 2 ended with the Qunari attacking the Viscount's residence. Act 3 started out with Meredith and Orsino arguing - and they both go into a battle royale at the end of the act. And since I think the Mage/Templar conflict was stupid in DA2, I desperately wanted to avoid it, if at all possible.
I knew the game only lasted 3 acts, so when I saw Meredith and Orsino fighitng, I immediately knew how the game was going to end. While there was a twist with Anders and Meredith's evil magic sword of doom, it was the ending I knew was going to happen the second Act 3 began. And so I resent Anders for doing what he did and ENSURING that my Hawke would have no way around the inevitable stupid battle that was now determined to happen.
Mage vs. Templar? Save the Mages vs. the Right of Annulment? That's the climax? We had that decision already in DAO.
Just like we already had "Fade spirit fused with another human in non-abomination form" (Anders vs. Wynne), just like we already had "blood mage with good intentions that goes horribly awry" (Merril vs. Jowan), just like we had "something ancient and horrible in the Deep Roads of unknown power" (the lyirum idol vs. the Anvil), just like we already saw "an abused slave elf turned into a killer" (Fenris vs. Zevran), just like we already saw a "cheating, sexually liberated pirate captain" (big boobs Isabella vs. realistic Isabella), just like we already saw "Flemeth can shape shift into a dragon and avoid death" (Sharp and pokey Flemeth vs. old Flemeth)...
The only plotline that wasn't recycled from DAO was the Qunari invasion. There should have been an Act 4 that showed Hawke struggling to unite Kirkwall after the events of Act 3 against a larger invasion force of Qunari, if you ask me. That was the only thread that made me intrigued to play the game. Going from the highpoint of taking down the Arishok to finding out the end of the game was going to end in what I already did as one of the first quests in DAO was, to me, insulting.

Not necessarily on what it does as a game, but on what it represents for the game industry.

DA2 wasn't terrible, but it did feel unfinished. BioWare clearly had so much more planned than they obviously were able to get done.
I'm more willing to blame EA for that, to be honest. Massive publishing companies always try to rush out big titles.
Just my $.02.

I sort of agree with you. It's not my favorite game but it's alot better than some people make it out to be. But of course opinions differ and while some may agree with me alot more don't.
Yeah. It's not my favorite game of 2011 but it's pretty up there. There were too many things I had issues with but the replay value for me is high and overall I enjoyed the best aspects of it. Story and characters.

And with all of this restriction, I am still finding things to do that I missed in my first three passes! I get to try different paths (so long as they can't interfere in the meta game course). So was it a crappy game compared to DA:O? Yeah it was. BUT was it a crappy game? No it wasn't. I've been playing Video game RPGs since the early 90s (and RPGs since '78) . I have played my fair share of crappy RPGs over 3 decades. DA2 was mediocre but entertaining, yet I am still on my 4th pass through the game since christmas... so there has to be something that keeps me playing, because I played Final Fantasy X a total of 2 times all the way through, and I loved that game!

I've often said that the companions and the banter between them are one of the very few bright spots in the game -- though I don't think they got enough screen time to justify the timeline of the game. voiced PC and the new combat animations are others -- but that doesn't change how it'd be a horrible game in my view.
A few good elements aren't enough to make me change my view. It'd still be a horrible game to me if it was made by an indie company and was the same as what we got. The horrific story, reactive/inactive protagonist, and the emphasis on combat and not a mix of combat/stealth/persuasion/other things are some of the flaws that bring the game down for me.
A horrible game with good elements, but a horrible game nevertheless.
I thought the companions are good as well, but not enough to make up for the problems with the game: mages and templars were little more than caricatures, there was no serious exploration into the dichotomy between mages and templars as a result, Orsino and Meredith became nothing more than fodder for Hawke instead of engaging characters, and choices didn't seem to matter when everything resulted in the same outcome. The lack of significant choice is an issue for the two last story DLCs as well.

Truthfully, I wouldn't say that I expected Bioware quality. I've only played two Bioware games: DAO and DAII.
Now, perhaps you could say that because of how I thought DAO was a good game -- not awesome or almost perfect. I found that it had flaws as well -- that managed to make me play it over 30 times I did expect a similar quality from DAII.
That's fair I guess, as a person would use my only prior experience with Bioware as a way to try and judge what I deem quality worthy.
What I did definitely expect though is a game that wasn't rushed and held true to the marketing and dev comments used by the team to promote it.
You aren't kidding about the claims by the developers not holding true to what we received. Mike Laidlaw's claim that Kirkwall would be shaped around our actions as Hawke are one example.

Hmm, for like 3-4 weeks it was or is (?) okayyyy; pretty 'decent' for a mmorpg *whisper* ..
Started another DA:2 campaign just for the fun some days ago, and even if the story is a bit 'odd' and not really comparable to good ol' DA:O it's still a nice game to spend some time into.
My only complains are the jump-into-actions, now its all about having 2 mages with some nasty AoE stuff = boring.
[besides, my game of the year 2011 is 'still' Shogun 2:TW ^^ ME:2 doesn't count, nor?

DA2 had Merrill, the Friendship/Rivalry, Varric... um... Bethany "Jailbait" Hawke... and Jo Wyatt doing FemHawke. Not much else going on.
I'm sure there was something else I liked... I probably posted it months ago now. Haven't played the game since a week after MotA and haven't looked back.

What made the game so special for me was the charcters and THAT is always the thing that makes a lasting impression on me in an RPG or any game in general, along with the story. I know the overall story of DA2 was not fantastic on it's own, but there were so many memorable moments and quests that it didn't matter to me. Although there was no Alistair or Morrigan in DA2, I still became very attached to some of them, most of all Anders. I really wanted to play Ferris' romance storyline in one of my playthroughs but I loved the Anders one so much I never did.
I agree with that. I thought the characters were very good even though, like you, I didn't think any were quite up to Morrigan and Alistair (which are two of my favorites of any Bioware game). And I think the quests for characters were better in DAII than in DAO (even though I still like DAO more all things considered).
Playing Amalur in all its drab glory has recently caused me to remember Dragon Age II's stories and characters more fondly.
(My "favorite" games of 2011 were Skyrim and Portal 2. Though I'd rather talk about the pros and cons of Dragon Age II than those games, whatever that means.)
