Constant Crashing

I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y570. My specs are:

Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz
RAM: 6GB
System type: 64-bit OS
OS: Windows 7 (64 Bit)
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M
D: Drive Space: 565/654GB
C: Drive Space: 27.4/28.9GB

I'm experiencing model pixelation and tearing (occurs on occasion during combat) as well as infrequent environmental tearing (this is less of a problem, as after I move from the spot I can't see it) and constant crashing.
I currently have the 285.62 Driver update for my graphics card and am currently getting the 280.19 update, and Dragon Age II is in its 1.03 version.

I put the graphics to the lowest, but even when it was on Medium with max Anti-Aliasing and Vertical Sync it runs smoothly.

It just crashes without warning. Sometimes during the BioWare loading screen upon game launch, others during the loading save and sometimes just randomly.

Does anybody have advice? Everything is up to date and it runs it smoothly (excluding infrequent tearing and coloured pixelation) on Medium base graphics with maximum non-compulsory settings (AA, VS etc), but it just crashes randomly.

I have to press ESC and then open the Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) to get the game back when it freezes. Note, when it freezes the gameplay still goes on, I just can't see what I'm doing.

... what the hell is wrong?

What you are describing sounds much more as if you are allowing the terrible Intel tinker toy video chip to run whenever it wants to instead of locking the stupid thing down.  However, it may also be a result of constant poor cooling when the components undergo stress.  What numbers are you getting from your thermal monitor utility?

And how do I fix that?

I am not sure if your laptop comes with option that switches between a low-power Intel graphics chip and the Nvidia chip as a power-saving feature. You can check Gorath's theory by starting the game launcher, selecting "Configure", and then "Summary". If it lists the display adapter as some sort of Intel Integrated Graphics thing, then that may indeed be the case. If so, you'll have to research on Google for other sources on that one.

One other possibility, based on what you've described, might be a good ol' fashioned overheating issue. I am always suspicious of laptops in that regard... so you may want to monitor your temps. There's some links to performance troubleshooting in the DA:O roundup, linked below in my sig. They're towards the bottom of the first post.

The system setup (in the BIOS) should allow the Intel chip to be disabled, the video driver will allow it to be disabled (one program at a time), and Windows Device Manager ought to allow it to be "removed". I'm sure there are probably other ways. Meanwhile, a Thermal monitor is a small program that watches the thermal sensors built into the system components.  Many new driver sets include such software from major hardware brands.

I'd say overheating. For some reason on the latest drivers (285.62) I am seeing 3 different Nvidia cards run a good 7-10 degrees Celsius hotter than they did before updating. Not an issue on two of my 3 machines but, I did have a crash because of it on the 9100 chip (the only integrated I own) I cleaned the machine inside and added another cooling fan which solved the problem.

In light of that, I would recommend a powered cooling mat for the laptop and a can of compressed air - remove the battery and blow out as much dust as you can.

I doubt it's an overheating issue, as the problem is recurring even when I open Dragon Age II when I start my laptop. On top of that, I can play games like Dawn of War II on Medium graphics, Age of Empires III on the highest settings, Prototype with High quality and High shadow with vertical sync enabled (but no anti-aliasing), Halo 2 and Civilization IV on high settings. I figure if those games can play without crashing then Dragon Age II should.

I used my bandwidth for the month which was from downloading All Point Bulletin which also works well on medium-high graphics (but has shocking steering lag), League of Legends, updating two copies of Age of Empires III, downgrading my drivers, updating Dragon Age II etc etc.

I consider myself a savvy programmer (really basic though, HTML and limited javascript), but I have even more limited knowledge when it comes to hardware.

Could someone provide a TUT or just tell me how I switch Display adapters? It's Intel® HD Graphics Family. I really don't understand hardware or how to fix hardware based problems, so... help me?

Try launching the game directly by going to Program Files(x86) > Dragon Age 2 > bin_ship >DragonAge2.exe. See if that kicks on the Nvidia card. If so, then you can just create a shortcut for that file to the desktop.

Otherwise, as I said, you should Google the issue or, better yet, check the forums associated with your laptop manufacturer.

For official tech support, go to help.ea.com, click on "Talk to a Game Advisor" and follow the instructions.

Switching graphics isn't a game problem, it's a drivers and Windows problem.  If you have never dealt with your machine's setup, you need a more appropriate venue than a game forum to be introduced to the contents of the BIOS.  Remember, laptops do not qualify for official support.  They have poor cooling, and the average laptop has unusable graphics for gaming, so EA won't know about switching off an Intel video chip, they will only know it is unsupported.

No matter what the title in the book may imply, the yellow-jacketed paperbacks from the book store with the titles "(Whatever) for Dummies" started out as excellent references, particularly the very first one, PCs for Dummies.  There is at least one chapter in there about system setup options in the BIOS.  Device Manager is covered, and the "Display Properties" features / functions also.  I think that Mr. Gookin has reached a tenth, or eleventh, or thereabouts, new edition because the book is revised fairly often.

Lastly, without proper thermal monitoring, it just isn't possible to dismiss overheating quite so readily, when you choose to use a laptop, instead of a proper gaming desktop, for this game.  Also, comparing this game to any game other than DA:O has no value in any regard.  If two games do not share game engines, they do not have comparable requirements.

Going through the file path didn't work either. In fact, the game window just closed but the sound is still playing. Need to restart my computer as I can't run another instance of it.

I tried googling it, no positive results. I'll try the Lenovo forums next.

- Thanks, Ben.

Did you say that you had exhausted all of the resources at Lenovo?

support.lenovo.com/en_US/

I think I might go to the nVIDIA forums first, where there is a particular forum just about this series of mobile solutions.

forums.nvidia.com/index.php

Incidentally, rather than leaving the thread to wither, those few of us still answering would be gratified to have feedback if/ when you are successful.

I received no help on the nVidia forums.

forums.nvidia.com/index.php is my post.

I guess I'll never get to play?

Thanks anyway.

I'll try running Diagnostics for the next three days. If I see no results, I'll re post and get this topic closed.

Thanks Gorath.

ok same problem for me, this damn thing crashes every time i try to play it i just got it today so the only thing i can think of is the patch. unlike him though my pc is top of the line. this is not a video card issue or anything wrong with the system. i can open the game, skim through anything i want but the minute i try to actually play it it crashes. and i mean the minute i havent even been able to get through the first cut scene

You will need your own personal problem thread, and there is a great deal more discussed in the guides to reporting than merely the physical hardware. To attempt a diagnosis with nothing at all to go on is a waste of everyone's time.

Neither the nVidia forums or the Lenovo forums provided assistance.

Thanks everyone.

Quirky idea, does it make a difference if you are running the computer plugged in or on Battery? I seem to remember another Lenovo having issues with graphics(running slow) due to power issues of the setup and it would actually run better on battery than plugged in. Don't know if it will end up helping you but......

My hardware shouldn't be the problem. On top of that, in my list of specs I included I stated I had a lot of room on my PC already. That, and I've tried running it on low.

I noticed a message I recieved a while ago that suggested I remove the current drivers and update to the beta 290.36 drivers. Unfortunately, my card isn't compatible with those drivers. Just figured I should say that. I'll keep checking back over the course of a week to see if someone has another idea.

Omega will eventually remove your card from the blacklist that your manufacturer insisted on.

I believe the NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M is a 2GB graphics card. It meets the recommended requirements for 90% of the latest and graphic-intense games, and the minimum requirements for the remaining games. For Dragon Age II it meets the minimum requirements.
