Whether or not it's a roleplaying game is a better argument, most of them are better compared to action-adventure games...but whether or not they're games in general?
From wikipedia: "A video game is an electronic game that involves human interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on a video device."
Games that everyone else loves but you despise?

Any JRPG. How are those even games, let alone roleplaying games?
Because there is stuff for you to do? Manage inventories, arrange equipment, decide on party arrangement and battle tactics, ect. If it's a question of degree of interactivity, that can be applied to many games outside RPGs that offer as much or less.
Is Final Fight less of a game because all the player does is walk their character endlessly to the right beating up the same generic enemies for hours?
What about adventure titles? All you do there is click-click-click objects to solve puzzles. There is little other interaction with the world.
All we get to do in racing games is drive a car. If we are lucky we might get to tweak or upgrade it a bit. Shooters? Press a few buttons to fire your weapons until everything in front of you is dead. You might get to explore an open self-contained environment, but all progression is broken into a linear level progression. You need to finish X stage to play Y stage, and so on.
Yeeeah, I'm going to have to say JRPGs still count as games until someone raises the bar on what a gaming experience should be.

You're right, that wasn't fair. JRPG combat is game-like.Seagloom wrote...

I was thinking of the overall arc of JRPGs where the player basically just follows directions and eventually gets to the end. There's no interactivity in the game generally, though there is in several component parts (like combat and inventory management, as you point out).

I'd suggest dotHack or Chrono Trigger if you want to play JRPGs which go beyond the common rabble, and give you more choice, exploration and less A to B.

Most games where the entire focus for the genre used to be quality single player campaigns, but has in modern times been reassigned to nothing but multiplayer with a bunch of snot-nosed 12 year olds wailing into their microphones and smashing their controllers/keyboards when they lose.
Kind of like most FPS games I guess. CoD would be a good example. I don't take any real issue with Halo, as I feel that Bungie kept the quality of the campaign at a high level for all 5 games, despite a massive increase in multiplayer interest between titles.
i agrre with you! battlefield 3 though a good story had a short campaign as the game focused too much on online multiplayer something i am not interesting as much as single player story campaign.
I would prefer if online multiplayer were not avaible at all, just offline multiplayer for people i know.

Though it's kinda love&hate, I really don't get the hype about the naive plot and the simplistic chracters and universe (except some sweet spots - like Wrex and the elcor race).
At least now I can make some more hypotheses about Dragon Age 2 - I think the developer hoped that when Mass Effect is over, they can transfer (or merge) the Mass Effect team to DA (and ToR)...
DA2 and ME are incredibly similar, imho. This in every way save the setting (and one game-play mechanic)...
So, as I really despised the direction of Dragon Age, and as Mass Effect clearly isn't for everyone (especially the lovers of old-school RPG's who want quirky and wonderfully diverse "feel" to their games), I actually despise Mass Effect.
