My problem with Udina is that he comes off as a not very good diplomat. Ranting and acting like a jerk to foreigners might be good for your internal political standing, but I expect a diplomat to be capable of forming decent working relationships.

Even in the field of underhanded plotting and political maneuvering, it's Anderson who impresses. What with his bringing Shepard before the Council behind Udina's back and then explaing to Udina why he has to pretend that he'd supported it all along.

It is when the person claiming it is the player character.

You know, one of these days they should make a game where the player character really is insane, and in your valient efforts to save the world you just get a lot of people killed. Total anti-climax at the ending when it's revealed you were wrong all the while.

That would kind of kill the replay value.

Locking down the Normandy to stop you from potentially declaring war with the Terminus because of your insane ravings isn't the betrayal we're talking about? What else did he do to spite the playerbase?

He doesn't shake hands with you and speaks to you only when he wants to criticize something you did or give you orders.
For many gamers, this is akin to a Yoshimo style betrayal.

"Humanity has made great gains thanks to you, but now, you're becoming more trouble than you're worth"

"The council can handle this, with my help of course"

He's just an ass-licking idiot, who just cares about himself or the so called "humanity".
The only reason about his concern over a war with the Terminus is because he doesn't gain anything from it.

Oh he'll have your back.....in the sights of his assault rifle when he's preparing to try to kill shepard. He's good for nothing, and if there is an option to kill him I'll take it at virtually any cost.

I would love to have had the no choice option in ME2, I pick that on my canon Shep as he is a by the book soldier and abhors politics. I generally pick Anderson because I'm worried about Udina's opportunism hitting me between the shoulder blades, like grounding me in ME1.

Udina was just being used by the Council to give them plausible deniability, despite never actually rescinding the orders which required Shepard to pursue Saren.

To OP: No, of course not. Udina thinks about one person first: Udina. Everything else is secondary. The only reason he backed Shepard in getting Spectre status is because it got him a lot of prestige. If Shepard's goals are ever contrary to his own, it's pretty much guaranteed he'll be against her/him.

EDIT: Clarification
Udina isn't necessarily a bad guy.  He's a politician.  One of the intrinsic parts of being a politician is public image, and he will try to keep his at any cost, as would any reasonable politician.  Letting Shepard do what is necessary to save the Galaxy is not what will make him seem an effective leader.  He makes it very clear in ME1 that he seeks a greater position for humanity; one even greater than just Council membership.  If Shepard's off rallying the races together, it's going to look bad that he's on the Council and not doing anything about Earth, so it's understandable if he intentionally tries to shift Shepard's attention towards Earth and away from the other races.

War is business, nothing more. He doesn't gain anything, he doesn't support it.

So you mean if he supported the war, he'd totally support Shepard's insane rantings? He'd sit there and tell the Council that Shepard is right, there ARE evil space cthulhu machine monsters in space and they did eliminate all the protheans and if you don't let him go after Saren immediately that everybody would die?

Would you kindly not make the silly argument that knowing a plot twist ruins a story?

This is off-topic, but I'd just like to tell you I'm very glad you spelled "Cthulhu" correctly. Most don't.

It can under certain circumstances. The second time I watched "The Sixth Sense", it just wasn't the same at all.

Also, speaking of "would you kindly", I was quite depressed that I had the twist of Bioshock ruined for me.:crying:

You may have somewhat of a point though. I guess it would depend on how exactly this game was handled.

A story that's ruined by a plot twist being revealed isn't a good story. A story should be able to stand on its own by its execution of its story and plot twists.

Well, since the point is to screw with the player anyway, I'd make a no-win finale.

You're aware people think you crazy... but at the same time you're on a time-pressing mission to stop the imminent disaster.

Do you let yourself be restrained, or not?

If you refuse to be stopped, you kill the bad guy... but are indisputably crazy.

If you let yourself be stopped, you let the disaster happen...and get a bad end, with the disaster (that may or may not be a hallucination) happening.

Did you save the day even though you were crazy? Were you crazy at all? Or do people just think you're crazy because you succeded in saving the day?

Total lack of vindication.

Watch and see how every hardcore-renegade who has seen the leak calls Udina's role stupid and lazy because it didn't match up with what they wanted for the character. Oh wait, it's happening already. Some mentions of TIM, too. Of course they'd mention him as he's basically the hero of renegades everywhere.

Udina is a politician. That's all there was to his character. I don't care what happens to him as long as it makes for an exciting story.

Just trying to push the fact that the people complaining about the script are also the ones who would likely let a little favoritism (which I'm sure exists) for paragons and portraying TIM as less than perfect upset them and sour their opinion of the entire story.

yeah I know. I mean let's be honnest the majority of us on our first playthrough picked Anderson because he was awesome, always had our backs, and Udina was an ****hole the whole game. Who was a better politician was probably never even considered for most of us the first time ever. Lol

I was really hoping that was going to be the final ending of Alan Wake, especially after the mental hospital stage. Alas, it was basically just a Stephen King knockoff, albeit a pretty good one.
