Here's what I posted about Feron on the Thane thread. In short, I adore him, and I think he's a completely viable love interest. (No, he and Liara are NOT together. They knew each other only briefly before he was taken and it was a rocky working relationship before he proved himself. Something could develop in the future, but the moment there is nothing, as they both expressly tell you. There's just as much potential for romance between him and Shepard as there is between him and Liara. Read the spoilers if you want to know more.)
REDEMPTION COMIC SPOILERS: In the comics (where you learn Aria's monitoring of Omega is part of the reason Shepard's even alive) he seemed a bit... not cowardly, but cautious; like a person who had to work a bit in order to find his bravery. Self-protective, self-interested, but not excessively so. Someone who had to balance those feelings pragmatically with his desire to do the right thing. He needed some pushing to help Liara. He seemed wary of asari, but extremely wary of Cerberus. Not prejudiced, just, again, self-protective.
He gave Liara some reason not to trust him in the beginning--he concealed the fact that he was the Shadow Broker's agent and thus almost got her killed in an attack she wasn't prepared for. She seriously almost kills him because she isn't sure that he didn't just plain sell her out to the highest bidder. He is terrified of her. (Liara's seriously badass in Redemption.)
Feron is the Garrett-from-Thief type, somewhat, if you know the character. Not as snarky, more grim and survival-focused. He's more devious than he appears; he tries to seem like a normal shady guy trying to make a living. But he's actually a stealth good guy, of sorts. He sold the Shadow Broker out not because he could be bought, but because he had scruples about the guy working with the Collectors.
He actually showed a touching amount of respect for Shepard as well--in his own words: "Then I heard they were interested in Shepard's remains. That was beyond perverse. I had to stop it." So he approached Cerberus, who also assumed he was just an easily flip-able lackey they could use. Then when the Shadow Broker's agents began to suspect his motives, he promised to get them Liara as a cover. So his motives were in sync with Liara's all along and she just didn't know it.
Liara almost ruins her own mission, potentially, once or twice, by being so passionate about getting Shepard's body back YESTERDAY (which made me like her more because it was touching) but Feron holds her back, being canny enough to keep his head. He gets her into the base by pretending she's his hostage. So Feron is another one besides Aria without whom Shepard wouldn't be alive, along with Miranda and TIM.
I just found it so appealing that he was not only repelled by the Collectors and what they do, but specifically even more so by the fact that they wanted Shepard. That was the motivating factor for him. He couldn't bear the thought of what they might do to Shepard's dead body. So he does have a sort of connection to her, which throws a bit of a new light on Shepard coming to help Liara rescue him. Feron helps Liara rescue you, then you help her rescue him... poetic.
END SPOILERS.
