I'd personally like to see more branching story paths along the lines of what The Witcher 2 did. There was more than one great RPG than Skyrim this year.

I seem to remember that one dev once said they were looking at all games if there was something to learn (or something like that). The comment about Skyrim is only quoted everywhere because it's Skyrim. Everything has to be blown out of proportion.

A Dragon Age game with an open world like Skyrim along with the branching storylines of The Witcher 2.

*gets dreamy*

A combination of the two plus DA elements would make- the ultimate game I wager!

Alas one can only dream...

Hopefully what they'll learn from TW2 is how NOT to design an interface.

I have to say, I prefer true party based combat, and Bioware has always led when it comes to having interesting companions to interact with. But TW2 really stole my heart this year. I feel Skyrim was a better 'world', but TW2 had a far more interesting story and far more memorable companions/characters, and their handling of the sex scenes in TW2 was better than anything else in any other game IMO. (Although it would have been better if they'd included a no-nudity menu option for those who find the sight of human skin to be more offensive than the sight of beheading/impaling/disembowelling those same bodies)

If Bioware returned to a more realistic aesthetic, stopped their half-hearted approach to adult content, made the world itself more interactive, and re-opened up the ability to interact more freely with the npc's, then I think they'd be back in style.

But I am doubtful they'll actually do much of that.

Bioware doesn't make open world games. Even their mmo isn't as 'open world' as it should be. It's a shame but it's the truth.

I hope they do take away the beautiful graphics from TW2. That was certainly a triumph.

I hope they do not take away from it how to create the most unlikeable protagonist in RPG history. :-)

the games they should really learn from is Batman Arkham city for environment building and characterization. Those two are the major weaknesses of Dragon Age 2. Dragon Age does not need Skyrim's massive world, or TW2's pretty and live world. it needs an environment that fits its theme and to depict some strong characters.

they may learn but can they implement with all the resources cut/moved out?

Because TW2 is not on consoles, therefore when the headlines pop up saying "Dragon Age will be like TW2!" the majority would be like "Pfft, so."

By saying DA will take queues from skyrim, Bioware stay in the limelight with a large crowds, that being the fans of Skyrim.

Because they're looking at Skyrim's sales.

Hopefully that people respect quality of implementation, and people enjoy buying/playing sequels that stay true to their franchise and the fans who are already invested in it.

These are things we can see from TW2 and Skyrim even though their game mechanics aren't inherently better than (or imo even as good as) the BG/DA:O class of games.

None of the mechanics, really - and certainly not the level of choice and RP in your character.

Haphazard redesign and sponging of mechanics from other games is why DA2 is made of fail. Let's have no more of that.

Wholeheartedly agree.

For me, the Witcher 2 is my GOTY.  The depth, its characters, the immersion value are all incredible.  I am also a big fan of Skyrim and how they designed their world.

Does that mean I want Dragon Age to copy or borrow from either?

Not really.  CD Projekt and Bethesda both had a clear idea in mind as far as what they wanted to accomplish.  They set out and they did that, each coming up with their own unique product.

I would rather Bioware did the same than trying to copy certains aspects of either TW 2 or Skyrim.

They should mainly focus on returning to the good things from DA:O that were lost in DA2, but there are also some very good things that could be copied from TW2. For example, the nudity and sex scenes were very well done in hollywoodesque style - much more suited to a mature game than the fully clothed prudishness of DA2 with it's unremoveable underwear.

I have to say, people hailing The Witcher Two as the greatest RPG ever gets old. Not talking about you in particular, OP, but just sayin.

Sex in TW 2 was superbly handled, best I've seen in a game.

Best ever?  Don't know.  Best of 2011?

In my opinion.

Err, you might want to stay out of threads mentioning TW 2...

Personally I think they should have a deeper look at Deus Ex.

Not only did it get the choice and consequence part right, but it also got the ability to play the game how you chose right. Stealth, Tech, Loud, Diplomatic. The game really lets you play how you wanted.

The skyrim bit gets blown out of promotion, all they said was something about an open world 'feel', whatever that means.

I do not see where the Skyrim hype comes from tbh. Don't get me wrong it's a good game but nowhere near as good as some people made it out to be. I mean, one of the things that was hyped was graphics but to me the animations and graphics were mediocre at best.
Of course this could be due to me playing TW2 before Skyrim which made Skyrim pale in comparison, after experiencing TW2 graphics/animations playing Skyrim was like going back in time 5 years.

^ This, if Bioware is nothing else, it is open to suggestion.  They listen, they act when they agree, and for the most part they listen to the fanbase as a whole, why would that not apply to looking at the doings of other developers?

Gasp! I would never suggest such a thing!
