I always randomize my pick. Believe it or not, I actually like all the squadmates.

Though, if I had to pick I guess I would at least take Wrex. Because he's awesome and he's got this whole unique Krogan-Human friendship.

For my main Shepard:

ME1: Garrus and Wrex
ME2: Garrus and Miranda
ME3: Garrus and Liara

It seems fitting to end the story with Shepard's right hand man and his LI.

Although at least once I will take the DLC character just to see what dialogue he/she/it has - should be interesting.

ME1: Ashley and Liara or Liara and Tali (and that was the squad I used all game)
ME2 varies wildly because squad mates powers are so **** blocked I have to take certain ones depending on my class to be the most combat effective
ME3: Liara (she's going to be my permanent squadie ) and whoever else probably Ashley or Tali (ME1 squad ftw)

that's assumeing my nightmares don't come true and Origin isn't "required"
