I guess this is where I get confused. Is the position really that everyone in the ME universe should have "manners"?

Nope; just stop using profanity that may offend Players that are forced to listen to it.

You would not want to hang around me, I drop the C-bomb. I hang out with too many Scots.

Don't feel bad; there are many in these forums I would not care to meet, and nationality has nothing to do with it. I consider CP among my On-Line friends, and he is Welsh, I believe. And Stan used to write of being Irish....

I have a better idea: when something offends you just get over it and move on with your life. Part of life is being exposed to things you don't like.

Nah; you and some others here already have that covered....

Good. Not everyone in society has manners, which was the error in judgment. It is not considered polite, for example, to run someone through with your sword, yet stories will show this as well. People will always find ways to offend each other, regardless of the word used. Language must suit the situation, not the other way around.

Agreed. I mean, how do you tell an interactive story about machine gods committing galactic genocide? That doesn't strike me as very polite.

OP, you still haven't told us which words are acceptable to you, and which aren't. When you get around to it, please explain why you draw the line where you draw it.

I agree. Having every character actively avoid cursing makes a situation seem more formal and restrained than it would have otherwise. That's alright when that's the mood you want to convey, but it can be disconcerting when applied to every situation. It's not actively offensive, but it makes the dialogue feel wooden and unnatural. Sort of like how it would sound if absolutely everyone called each other "Mr. X" and "Ms. Y" in every situation rather than being allowed to use their names from time to time.

Doubt highly that machines need to swear much at all; leave that for the inferior beings.... Image IPB

I doubt a good author needs to tell a story involving galactic genocide. Leave that to the inferior beings.

Someone else may have sent the mixed signal that I wanted polite speech. I only recall asking for soeech and dialogue that omits profanity.

One does not have to equate to the other.

Profanity is a choice. I respect a persons right not to use profanity, but when you start dictating your moral superiority, my respect stops. They're just words people! Being profane is just another way to express ones self. Getoff your high horse.

From what I have played through so far, I would say it is roughly on par with Mass Effect 2. As mentioned, this is a mature rated title and the story takes place in some trying circumstances that, depending on the characters present, may cause the utterances of profanity.

Swearing and profanity has not been added just to make the title seem more adult or to appeal to people who like profanity, but there are characters who use profanity as it fits their personalities. I think this mirrors the real world and, whiel I personally try to limit my use of swearing, I do feel it is correct for the characters involved.

Although you don't limit your amount of spelling errors :P

It's not really about politeness, it's about having dialogue that sounds like how the characters would genuinely react in any given situation. I suppose you could manage that by omitting any character for whom cursing would come naturally, but that doesn't really work when you're supposed to be hanging with soldiers, criminals, and other  miscellaneous riffraff.

Which will really get an interesting, since it opens up the door to a discussion of what each individual user considers profanity, or insulting.

That's exactly the same thing, though. Unless they have "manners" they'll use that language and offend the shrinking violets out there.

Also, you're doing the Odd Capitalization Thing again.

(Note that my above use of nonstandard capitalization is OK in informal English; "Odd Capitalization Thing" is a fake proper noun. But this is intermediate-level stuff, and you probably shouldn't try it yourself).

I'm surprised that people complain about a bit of profanity in a game where you continually shoot people in the head. It's truly baffling.

Not only that, but you can have sex with them.

(Not the people you shoot in the head, that's just gross)

That's some hard-core sadism, man. Sex with the people you shot in the head. Wow.

It is realy anoying that there was more profanity in ME2 then in ME1 and there is going to be more in ME3. Profanity is not needed. Also the use of profanity is a sign of a weak mind truing to sound stroung.

It's weird how often this "necessary" argument pops up.

If you thought for more than five seconds, you'd realize that this argument has no force whatsoever unless the hearer thinks there's a reason not to have profanity in the first place.

Sure, profanity isn't necessary. So *******ing what?

Not to put too fine a point on it, but that's horsesh*t.
