I actually loved Jack and Aria's usage of the F word, it fit their personalities and provided impact to what they were saying. It was certainly not gratuitous or offensive, in my opinion.

As I recall, she would have something to say on several occasions if visited below deck. So I rarely checked, and left her own personal mission until last.

Ironically, simply being nice to her was looked at a sexual advance. Understandable, but way off base.

gee what's wrong with "darn". "shoot", "fudge" and "heck"? Think of the spice these would add to Zaeed's dialog, or provide some baddies with real snappy come-backs. Those other nasty words should be banned along with all those unnecessary and - frankly - embarrassing suggestive moves and scenes.

Thank you. The Morality Police appreciate your attention.

Three times in a thirty hour game, I see where people are coming from. Jack was crazy vulgar.

To be fair that can be applied to every character in ME2.

A good story does not need to rely on profanity, stereotypes, and appealing to the lowest common denominator in language to weave a superior tale. There are enough heroes and villains in literature and film to indicate that other choices can be used well.

Aww see, now there you go being all unreasonable again. No offense, but if you keep up this attitude of "lowest common denominator", no one is going to take you seriously. To be blunt: you are not a special little snowflake. You, like the rest of us, are consumers with an interest in a certain type of product. That is all.

Your error in judgment is in the conclusion that because the story doesn't need profanity, it shouldn't have it. A story doesn't need alot of things and can still be considered "good", that doesn't necessarily mean it should cut out the extras. A curse is a word, nothing more. Intent should be a far bigger factor to anyone looking to be offended than the vocal tones. Whether Jack refers to Miranda as a "female dog" expletive or a "swine" really results in the same thing; the end result is that Jack seeks to insult Miranda, which was expressed quite well.

And of course the cursing wasn't optional; it's an authored narrative. In a story with characters as diverse as Mass Effect, you're going to get all types. The sophisticated, the crude, and many others. That goes for movies and novels as well.

While it is common, not everyone uses profanity, and some wish to avoid it. Never have seen Pulp Fiction, Resevoir Dogs, or many other QT films due to this form of speech, or many others like them. Have not invested in The Witcher games for much the same reason. Same goes for books as well. .

That's a damn shame. Quentin Tarantino is my favorite director. Image IPB

Words have power; pens > swords kind of thing. Wars have been ignited because of them, and moments are sometimes etched in memory because of them, too. My hope is that those in authority choose better words than vulgarity; both in RL and fiction.

QT would be so proud....

All well and good for authority, but we're telling a story here, heavily reliant on context and the kind of character the author wishes to incorporate. In so far as you have accepted that expletives exist in everyday life, then they have a place in writing. We might as well be arguing that we should remove all violence from story-telling.

No, that's just 3 examples. She does it like, twice more during her conversations.

[...]there are a myriad of ways to approach the subject of surprise besides vulgarity.

I prefer humor, as seen often in Firefly and Serenity. When River trashes a bar or turns a gun on Mal, the reply chosen is with humor for the audience. When Jayne is told they are all going to die, his choice of a response brings a smile. Much better for me than more common utternces; the same ones heard so frequently elsewhere.

Firefly, really? They threw around explicatives all the time. Sure, the profanity was either outdated or in a different language, but the intent behind the outbursts were the same. In any case, having a character react to a surprising situation in a humorous manner is acceptable if decreasing tension is your goal. Using humor inappropriately can result in a massive anti-climax, and using it all the time just makes the audience not take the threat seriously.

Jack is not a good example of what you are talking about.  Remember, even if you expect civility from your material, some of the characters therein may not be civil, nor couth.  The bottom line is that while words have power in the hands of a skilled communicator, vulgarity is often used, correctly so, to display a lack of penmenship so to speak.

Don't fuck with Aria!

Pretty funny isn't it?

So, I didn't read the thread. Will ME3 have cursing or not? Do you think there will be literal "F"ing? I'm guessing yes.

Can't say that here though, for some reason.

Heh, can't say I haven't seen that trick before while administrating a board, but it was well played here.
