BTW, OP, just so Bioware knows how to cater to you in the future, what words are verboten exactly?

Well-played, as usual.

Firefly, really? They threw around explicatives all the time. Sure, the profanity was either outdated or in a different language, but the intent behind the outbursts were the same. In any case, having a character react to a surprising situation in a humorous manner is acceptable if decreasing tension is your goal. Using humor inappropriately can result in a massive anti-climax, and using it all the time just makes the audience not take the threat seriously.

Perhaps, but I would say the tension between the Reavers of Serenity, and that of the Reapers of ME2 may have been more intense; humor or not. And I have always liked the line, "We are going to need a bigger boat!", as opposed to the obsceneties uttered in the same film.

gee what's wrong with "darn". "shoot", "fudge" and "heck"? Think of the spice these would add to Zaeed's dialog, or provide some baddies with real snappy come-backs. Those other nasty words should be banned along with all those unnecessary and - frankly - embarrassing suggestive moves and scenes.

Thank you. The Morality Police appreciate your attention.

No thanks needed; glad to help Junior.

..."junior"...?  Hmmm, I guess you're as young as you feel.

Never become a professional writer.

Especially since the line is actually:

"You're going to need a bigger boat."

Depends on the job also, as swearing may get you fired or demoted.

And I do care, at least enough to try and lobby for better products moving forward.

But that job you might get fired from would not be "soldier."

Because vulgar language obviously degrades the quality of a product.

As do sex and violence, regardless of context or content. Surely they're next to go.

Bioware should remake ME1 and replace all the guns with hand radios.

A good story does not need to rely on profanity, stereotypes, and appealing to the lowest common denominator in language to weave a superior tale. There are enough heroes and villains in literature and film to indicate that other choices can be used well.

Aww see, now there you go being all unreasonable again. No offense, but if you keep up this attitude of "lowest common denominator", no one is going to take you seriously. To be blunt: you are not a special little snowflake. You, like the rest of us, are consumers with an interest in a certain type of product. That is all.

It's pretty obvious what's going on there. There's a common phenomenon where the traits of the "elite" are seen as the norm and deviations from that norm are seen as defects. I forget what this is called; my social science classes are a couple decades behind me now.

"Elite" in quotes because it really isn't true that our society works this way. "Vulgarity" is a hallmark of some of the most powerful subcultures we have. However, most of our public settings for exercising power still do conform to the onetime habits of the onetime elite even though the current elite no longer follows these practices in private. That will probably go on indefinitely; it keeps out the riff-raff.

It's just sad to see people internalizing these values.

Three times in a thirty hour game, I see where people are coming from. Jack was crazy vulgar.

No, that's just 3 examples. She does it like, twice more during her conversations.

It's funny that you should mention that. It reminds me a bit of Nietzsche's Genealogy, in terms of how language has been shaped to suit the advantages of the aristocrat, where what is to the advantage of the elite is regarded as "good".

Currently we have this sentiment of everyone being created equal, but for some reason we still can't get away from this idea of the "elite" as being ideal. It could just be a simple case of the human ego: "If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself."

How can you not love the delivery of this line "So **** you, and thanks for asking"

Plus really, out of all the things to complain in a sci-fi game filled with violence, love, whatever other thing might bother people these days, you complain about profanity

Where's Udina with "This is an OUTRAGE"

Did Shepard himself ever swear in any Mass Effect game? Can't remember he did. I do know some NPCs swear, but I think Shepard is actually quite polite, even Renegade Shepard never swears, or does he?
