"Sometimes Joker's a real ***", after saving Liara on Illium.

"Wow, you greedy ******", after intimidating the group of colonists on Eden Prime.

There are other moments, I'm sure.

Edit: The second one might have actually been at the space port (after discovering Nihlus).

They're rare, but there, alot of mention of ass, mainly in references to kicking on the Renegade dialogue options.

Garrus:  That's the thing.  We never caught him.

Shepard:  What the **** happened?  (it's not the F-Bomb, but the slang for Hades)

The discussion was just prior to Garrus' Mission in ME 1 to catch the Salarian Dr. Heart.


Edit:  the "You Greedy B*****D!" was said by Ashley, to the dockworker over Nihlus' body, btw.

Profanity can sometimes add a little humor to the situation. I always enjoyed this little piece from ME2. Makes me lol every time

Perhaps, but I would say the tension between the Reavers of Serenity, and that of the Reapers of ME2 may have been more intense; humor or not. And I have always liked the line, "We are going to need a bigger boat!", as opposed to the obsceneties uttered in the same film.

I'm not saying that decreasing tension is a bad thing. It gives the audience a break, help keep them invested, and can even make things feel more tense later by providing contrast. However, unless you're writing a comedy the characters shouldn't react humorously every time they're surprised. No one will take the story seriously.

More on topic, what made cursing acceptable in Firefly but not in Mass Effect? Is it alright for a character to intend to say something offensive so long as you personally aren't offended?

"damn" is not swearing, it's cursing, not not really heavily cursing too.

"Cursing" is just a synonym for "swearing".  It's not a meaningful distinction.  It's like saying "'Sh*t' isn't swearing, it's cussing." It's the same damn thing.
