I know I am not the first person to ask this question but all my "research" is taking my in circles. I will see an entire thread advocating Sniper Rifles and then another that says Vanguard with Mattock is the most potent combo in the game. So, I would like to pose the question again with all the DLC out and time for people to experiment with different builds.

Other useful information- I will be using Evi Shot Gun. (although after reading this forum I have a new found respect for the Scmitar) I like to use Miranda and either Thane or Zaheed. Although, I plan on using Miranda and Kasumi for the rest of the game. I have maxed Heavy Charge and will soon take Champion. I plan on using Area Reave as my bonus power. I also would like to have Squad Cyro Ammo. So, with all this info in my mind which would you suggest? Perhaps even more importantly which weapon would you say makes the class more dynamic or fun? Some feedback would be greatly appreciated. This seems like the ultimate forum for Mass Effect. Image IPB

Personally I like the Viper/Eviscerator combo the best. The Mattock is basically a Viper without Scope, and it will get bonus damage up close BUT I really like the scope and the way a sniperguard plays. I have just finished a Vanguard with Mattock, and didn't enjoy it as much as the ones with Viper, it works but I didn't enjoy it. Sad to say it will greatly depend on you personally as much as anything else so you may want to save just before the pick, play some and then try the other.

Thanks for your input. So, in your experience it was much more fun to have acess to the Viper than the Mattock for your Vanguard?  Anyone else?

Since you like reave, then SaberSanDiego's thread about Scimitar vanguard with Reave might be the build for you.

That was before the mattock came out, and at lot of people think that mattock is overpowered, so its thought that the mattock on a vanguard might be the best vanguard - meaning that its probably overpowered.  But hey, try it for yourself.

Scrogublitzen has a cryoguard build that used cryo ammo, scimitar and Reave - its a fun build also, my favorite on xbox.

Both of the above builds recommend either sniper or AR training, so you might guess that its not so critical to either strategy.

^ also I just noticed your last question. Since you have no problem using the mattock, then I would go for Assault rifle training ( mattock ) because you can charge with that ( no scope ), and it tears up armor.

Thank you sir. I am just going to go with the AR and make a dominate Vanguard. Then I will do a play through as an Infiltraitor or Sniperguard. Always open to other suggestions though. Fun is the most important aspect to me but at the same time I like to make the best squad possible.

I like the Viper on the Vanguard a lot. It let's you open efficiently at range and either kill or weaken enemies before you charge into a group.

I don't have the Mattock. It probably isn't hugely overpowered except under Adrenaline Rush where its nonsensical rate of fire comes into play. It would be more forgiving than charging with the Claymore due to the difference in rate of fire.

I don't know that I would take ARs if I did Vanguard again.  That is unless I hacked it and made a funky Vanguard that only had an AR and a Pistol...

If you really don't want the Claymore, I'd make a sniper Vanguard. That way you have everything from long to short range covered.

For me, yeah, the Viper was more fun than the Mattock.  You do get some boost to damage on the Mattock during the slowdown time on Heavy Charge, but I never liked the feel of it up close.  I like the Viper much better, allowing better range damage and keeping either the Tempest or Shotgun as my upclose and personal choice.  Like I said it will turn out to be a very personal choice in people can give you their opinion but only you will know what feels best to you.  Many people love the Scimitar, yet it is VERY LOW on my list of guns to use, just because I don't like the way it feels in the game.

I went with the Mattock on this play through. I agree that the Viper is super fun but this way I have something to look forward to when I play a new game. Also, the Mattock seems to be able to take down enemies from range, mid combat and even up close. I also find the upgrades easier to find and with Samara in the party it seems to work well. Only problem I have now is I can't decide between Miranda-Kasumi-Samara for my main party make up.

Sorry for the double post but did anyone else see the Kindoms of Amalur and Mass Effect 3 promo? Looks sweet.

Since Vanguard is about tons of CQC Kasumi 's been my saviour many times with her grenade.
Then i change partners according to missions ( lots of shielded enemies or mostly armor ) .
Honestly often i 'd try a team and if not happy , restart with another till i find a satisfying combo.
Do you wish to stick with the same squad over and over ? Miranda is a pretty safe value because she can fight shields with overload and armor with warp , plus you get a health bonus if she's a tactician.
If i were to choose a "permanent" squad for i'd probably pick Kasumi and Miranda, but i don't have a deep detailed knowledge of stats as some other players here .

After having played this game to death and beyond I can say that I don't necessarily care too much about effectiveness, as all squadmates have their strengths and weaknesses.

Want weapon damage? Thane, Zaeed(dlc) and Garrus are ready to go.

Want to get rid of shields? Zaeed(disruptor ammo), Garrus, Kasumi and Miranda will remove shields in a snap.

Want to get rid of Armor? Mordin with his Incinerate, and Samara with her Reave stand ready.

Want a tank? Grunt and Jacob with barrier can take damage.

Want CC? Concussive Blast, Pull Field, Shockwave, Throw, Inferno Grenade, Flashbang, Shadow Strike, Cryo blast among other things all work just fine. Sure - some work better than others, but they all work. Don't sweat it too much.

Garrus and Mordin are my go-to bros though.

Thanks again everyone. I agree that any party has its positives and negatives. I just really like the asthetic of Morgan and Kasumi. Or Kasumi and Samara. Mordin has great powers and dialogue but I like the sexy strong and sleek female teammates.

Team Sexy is Miranda and Kasumi...

I would say my default squad is Garrus and Miranda. They are versatile enough to handle any mission. Optimal for every one? No... but fortunately you don't have to play optimally to beat every mission.

Mordin is very good though. Pair him with Samara or Jack and that is a whole lot of CC ability. Incinerate, Cryo... and Area Pull. Shockwave is a little trickier to use effectively, but I like it as well.

Tali is alright... she has crappy weapons and is geared towards synthetic missions. But you can make drone work out anywhere.

Legion is a lot like Tali but with better guns. Again, anti-Synthetic, but you can use him anywhere.

Grunt is my go to tank. Wave of husks? Varren trying to eat a Quarian? Just park Grunt in the way.

The ones I don't particularly care for...

Thane... don't like Throw all that much and I would just assume take Miranda if I want Warp. Supposedly a better Garrus for Collector or Blood Pack, but it doesn't really work out that way IMO.

Zaeed: the next "better Garrus." Has more weapon damage by a small amount. Has CS, but has Disruptor Ammo instead of Overload... that is a bad trade off. As for bonus power, he gets Inferno Grenade. The Cool Visual Effect to Actual Usefulness ratio approaches infinity with that one.

Jacob: Not quite the best at anything. Can tank, but Grunt does it better. Has Pull, but Samara and Jack do that better. Incendiary Ammo? Might be decent depending on class... But he has shotgun as primary weapon and that sucks. That makes three strikes (Incendiary Ammo was a foul ball).

I find Thane and Zaeed ok (anyone who can use the Incisor is going to be helpful on a mission). Jacob and Jack are my least-used allies. Terrible weapon selection, powers nerfed unless you strip protections.

Zaeed and Garrus are my Geth/synthetic crew. You will almost never find a better pair than that with Mattock and Incisors spitting Disruptor ammo.

Thane and Miranda are my general Collector crew for all but Infiltrator. Thane's unstable warp does good damage, the throw works well with pull to inta-kill collectors off platforms, Incisor means he stays alive and has really good damage output. Miranda is well Miranda, Unstable warp, bonus to weapons, bonus to health, and with Tempest a beast against barriers. There are generally not enough husks on Collector missions for me to want Mordin along instead of Thane or Miranda. If you are talking the IFF mission the sure, or the abandoned mine sure, but not your general collector mission.

Mordin and Samara, will all rotate out on IFF, with Grunt usually being a staple of the team, just because of how hard Grunt is to kill.

Playing an Infiltrator this run, and have found that Grunt plays a larger roll simply because when I cloak, enemies target squad and Grunt is one of the few that can survive that and not require burning Medi-gel like it was candy with 5 year olds.
Jacob is used early for pull, and Incendary ammo for squad, but once Grunt and Garrus come up, he is generally not used again after Horizon except for his mission.
Tali, Legion, and Jack are my least used, cool characters, but generally they man the ship.
