I get the error message "no valid replies or links" a few steps down in conversation with Cromwell when using the item upgrade mod. I know that it is the rings of protection causing the problem. Will a reinstall of the mod fix the problem? It was working fine before and I havent installed anything since. Any help?

I also have newest patch, g3 fix- and tweakpacks, Ascention, Solaufein installed.

A screenshot would help... If you installed the mod after tweak & it was the last mod you installed then yes it might help but then other mods could be mucked up if item wasn't last in the list. IMO using shadowkeeper to add the needed item to your pack (& remove the cash) is the safest option here.

I wasnt even aware that SK had the upgraded items in the item list, turns out it does. Thanks!

It only seems to be the rings of protection that are bugged, the rest seem to be working.

Yeah, the "new method" (or whatever it's called) is buggy -- at least when used in conjunction with other mods which modify Cromwell in some way.

In my games Cromwell would also bug out when you start gathering ingredients for some of the items which come late in his "rummage around" dialogue.

I always install the "list-based version" now. It's not quite as elegant, but at least it actually works properly.

I actually liked that version better, as well. That way I dont have to click through a dozen options before I find the right one.
